The Call of the Evangelist

Recently I was invited to speak at the EVERYONE conference in Amsterdam23. 5,000 pastors, missionaries, and evangelists gathered together from around the world for this historic conference on evangelism. In my workshop I taught on The Call of the Evangelist. If you are called by God to be an evangelist, you need to listen to this message as I look at the only person in the whole Bible is called an “evangelist.”

Transcript:

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:03):
I am so excited to be here because I’m excited about telling people about Jesus. How many of you love telling people about Jesus? You are in the right place. So my name is Daniel King. I’m a missionary evangelist. I go all over the world telling people about Jesus. When I was 15 years old, I was reading a success book that said, if you want to be successful, you need to write down your goals. And one of the goals they say would be good for young people is to try to become a millionaire by the age of 30. How many of you would like to be millionaires by the age of 30? What about by the age of 60 for some of you? Well, I realize that because of my upbringing as a missionary in Mexico, that money was not what was important to me. What was important was souls.

(00:43):
And so at the age of 15, I wrote down, I Daniel King, want to lead 1 million people to Jesus Before I turned 30 years of age, instead of trying to become a millionaire, I wanted to lead a million heirs into the kingdom of God to become a soul millionaire. And so God started opening up doors in different nations around the world. And I’m excited to tell you that before I was 30 years of age, we led over 1 million people to Jesus. Isn’t that exciting? Praise God. And so since then we’ve led another million. And, and I was praying, said, God, what comes next? I felt like God said, go for a million souls every single year. And so in the natural, that’s impossible. But with God, all things are possible. And so I believe that God is raising up many of you to become so millionaires.

(01:31):
How many of you would like to be so millionaires to lead over a million people to Jesus in your lifetime? I believe that God will bring it to pass in your life. If God can do it in my life, he can do it in your life. And I see in this room many people that are called by God to be great of evangelists. All right, so let’s talk this morning or this afternoon about the call of the evangelist. What is an evangelist? How many of you feel you’re called to be an evangelist? Raise your hand. All right, wonderful. Well, you’re in the right place now. The word evangelist is mentioned three times in scripture. Paul mentions the call of the evangelist in Ephesians, chapter four, when he mentions the, the fivefold ministry gifts, the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and the teachers, and each of these gifts are given in order to equip the saints for ministry.

(02:30):
And then of course, Paul writes to Timothy, who was actually serving as a pastor in Ephesus at the time, and he tells him in second Timothy four verse five, to do the work of an evangelist. Everyone will look at the prison next to you and say, do the work of an evangelist, Evangel. And some people think that being an evangelist is just standing up on a stage and, and preaching. But that’s only one small piece of it. It’s actually a lot of hard work being an evangelist. And so all of us are called to do the work of an evangelist. And then in Acts 21 it says, leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied. So Acts 21 verses eight and nine, and it specifically calls Philip in evangelist.

(03:34):
He’s the only one in the entire New Testament who is specifically called an evangelist. And so I believe that God has given us a picture of what an evangelist is called to do in the life of Philip the evangelist. Now, in the beginning of his life, he was not an evangelist. In Acts 21, he is called an evangelist. But his story actually begins over in Acts chapter six. And so this is going to be an interactive session. So if you have your Bible open up your Bible. I need, I need y’all to get out your Bibles. We’re gonna be talking about the word of God. Look at Acts chapter six,

(04:29):
Verse one. It says, in those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews, among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the 12 gathered all the disciples together and said, it would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the Word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word, this proposal, please the whole group. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit and also Philip. So in the beginning of his ministry, Philip was not a great evangelist. He was simply a person who had a heart to serve.

(05:27):
And I believe that every great ministry begins with having a heart to serve. They needed someone to wait on the tables. And Philip raised his hand. He was full of the Holy Spirit. He was full of power. He raised his hand. He said, pick me. Pick me. He says, I’m willing to serve. And so if you want to do great things for God, the first step is to find a place to serve. And so if you feel called to be an evangelist, find something to do in your local church. Do something, help clean toilets, serve tables. Go to your pastor and say, what can we do to reach out to the community, find a place to serve. And as you begin to serve the Lord, God will open up the doors for you to reach thousands of people for his kingdom. Amen. Can you say amen?

(06:21):
Amen. And so that’s what God has done in my ministry. I’ve been preaching to big crowds of people all over the world. But my ministry started when I was 10 years old. My parents became missionaries to the country of Mexico. And one day my dad said, we’re gonna do a drama about the life of Jesus. He says, Daniel, I want you to play the part of Jesus. And I thought that was a good idea because Jesus was perfect, and I was almost perfect. And so my sister Esther, she dragged her leg like this, and she pretended to be crippled, and Jesus would touch her on the forehead, and, and suddenly she could dance. And then my other sister, melody, she’d come up and she’d pretend to be blind, and Jesus would spit on the ground, make some mud, but before he could touch her, she was already healed.

(07:06):
And then my father said, now we’re going to crucify Jesus. And suddenly, I didn’t want to be Jesus any longer, but my younger brother, Steven, he loved this drama because as the older brother, I’d always beat up on Steven. But in this drama, he was the Roman soldier, and he got to beat up on Jesus. And so he’d bring this big, long leather whip and he’d begin to whip me with it. And I gotta be honest with you, I think he over acted a little bit. And one day he went to my dad, he says, this drama is not realistic enough. We need some blood. And my dad thought that was a good idea. So Steven brought a big bottle of ketchup, and he put the ketchup all over the whip. And when he whipped me with it, it looked just like the movie, the passion of the Christ.

(07:50):
There was blood all over my back. And then he crucified me to the cross. And I remember hanging on the cross with all the ketchup on my back. And every fly in Mexico was attracted to the ketchup on my back. And I’d always tell my dad, dad, it’s very difficult to hang on the cross. Could you please preach quickly? But my father did not know how to preach quickly. And so he’d start in the first book of the Bible, genesis, and he’d preach all the way to the last book of the Bible appendix. He’d preach the entire thing, and I’d be hanging there on the cross, we’d catch up on my back, flies crawling up and down my back, and I’d begin to pray. I’d say, God, forgive my father for he knows not what he does. And then I would die. And one time there was a little kid, he wanted to see if Jesus was really dead or not.

(08:38):
So he came up and started tickling the bottom of my feet. I’m telling you, I suffered for the sake of the cross, but Jesus said, take up your cross and follow me. And so the amazing thing is, is that the same messages we used to preach to 30 children in Mexico, now, God is allowing us to preach to 30, 40, 50,000 people at a time. Why? Because of this principle. If you’re faithful with the small things, God says, I will place you in charge of many things. And so what’s the secret to start starting? Oh, great ministry. You gotta buy a bottle of ketchup. That’s the secret. All right, so Philip starts out with a heart to serve God. And then the great chapter about the life of Philip the evangelist is Acts chapter eight. And so look at Acts chapter eight with me, verse four.

(09:33):
It says, those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went, Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. With shrieks, evil spirits came outta many and many paralytics and cripples were healed. So there was great joy in the city. All right, so this, this workshop is going to be interactive. I want you to look at those verses there, and these verses inform us on some of what an evangelist might do. And so just begin to talk to me, what do you see in those verses? What what do you think an evangelist should do? What what characteristics do we see for evangelism in these verses? Brother Bimba, he must go first. He must go. Everyone say the evangelists must go. Yeah. Yeah. It says Philip went to a city in Samaria. Now, Samaria was not Jerusalem. Jerusalem was his own people, but he goes to another people. So he goes, yeah, what else do you see there?

(10:49):
Preaching preached Christ. He preached. So the evangelist must preach. What was his message? Christ, Christ, Christ, Christ. It says he preached Christ. Now, this is how you distinguish a true evangelist. The evangelist will always preach about Jesus Christ. Now, in America, I don’t know if it’s true here in Europe, but in in America, you know, there’s, there’s people that call themselves evangelists, and they, they travel from church to church, but I don’t think many of them are. So, some of them are not really true evangelists because, you know, they go and they talk about marriage. They do a seminar and how to be a success in business. But if you want to identify a true evangelist, amen. His message will be about Jesus Christ. He can star anywhere in scripture, but he’ll get to Jesus just as quickly as he can. And so that’s how you identify a true evangelist.

(11:40):
Are they preaching about Christ? All right, what else do you see here? They cast out demons. They cast out demons. So yeah, we’ve seen that in many of our crusades, that there’s demon manifestations. And so with the authority in the name of Jesus, we cast out the demons. What else? What else? What else do you see? Signs, signs, signs, wonders, miracles. And so this is according to Acts eight, this is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Philip the evangelist. He did miracles. Yeah. What else do you see? Great joy. There’s great joy in the city. And we see that great joy comes when the evangelist preaches the good news, because peoples get saved. Their lives are completely cha changed. What else do you see captured the attention? They captured the attention of the people. The people listened. Yeah. What else do you see? He went where others didn’t wanna go. He went where others didn’t want to go. Amen. Yeah. What else? How, how many people does he minister to here in Samaria? Is it just a few multitude? It says a multitude. And so these are two of the distinguishing characteristics of the evangelists. He, he ministers to multitudes, and we see miracles cast out demons. There’s great joy in the city. He proclaims the Christ.

(13:11):
Yeah, we can learn a lot from this passage, and that’s what we want to see God do in our day-today. We want to cast out demons. We want to see God do miracles. We want to hear that Christ is being preached. We want to see multitudes. Can you say amen? Amen. All right. So let’s continue on. It says now for some time, there was a man named Simon who had practiced sorcery, and he was amazed at what was happening. He went from being amazing to being amazed. And then look at verse 13. It says, Simon himself believed and was baptized, and he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. And then the next verse, it says, when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. And when they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon them.

(14:13):
They had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. So we see here that a great revival is happening in Samaria. People are being baptized, miracles are happening. But then he sends word to the church in Jerusalem, and Peter and John, the apostles come and they come to work with Philip in this great revival that’s happening. And so the number one question that I receive as an evangelist, if any of you are evangelists, you probably have heard this question before. It’s what do you do for follow up? Have any of you ever heard that question? Anyone ever ask you that? What do you do for follow up? And they say, maybe they never, ever led a single person to Jesus in their whole life, but they stand with their arms. Folds are, well, what do you do about follow up? I always like to, I want to say like DL Moody said, well, what do you do about salvation? What do you do about leading people to Jesus?

(15:24):
Yeah. What do you do about follow up? Well, here, I think we have a biblical model for follow up. The evangelist does not minister alone. He ministers with other ministry gifts. And so the evangelist is especially anointed by God to break into new territory, to be a pioneer, to go where the gospel has not been preached to be, to preach before, to be entrepreneurial, to look for opportunities. And so that’s a unique gifting of the evangelist. But the evangelist is not called to minister alone. Along with the evangelist comes all the other ministry gifts. And so we need the apostles, we need the prophets, we need the pastors, we need the teachers, we need administration, we need helps ministry all these different gifts. We bring them along with us. And I think that’s the secret to follow up, is the evangelist is not called to do it alone.

(16:16):
You always work closely with the local church. We love the local church. We work with the local church. We want to partner with the local church. And, and so along with the evangelists, we bring all the other ministry gifts. And I think that’s the answer to follow up. The evangelist is cannot do all the follow up on, on his own. If someone says, what do you do about follow up? I say, come, brother, you come and help teach, come and help us follow up and disciple the new believers. Amen. Amen. All right. So they’re having a very successful ministry there in Samaria. And then this guy Simon, he comes, he asks if he can buy the gift of the Holy Spirit. And, and unfortunately in the body of Christ, there’s been a problem with people selling gifts of the holy experience.

(17:06):
But in fact, in English, we have a word called simony. It means to, to buy the gift of of God. And it actually is named after this man, Simon. But it, and and unfortunately there’s some people in the body of Christ that if you asked to buy the gift of the Holy Spirit, they might offer to sell it to you for a thousand Euro. You know? But you see, Peter, he rebukes the spirit. And so the, the evangelist is never called to be driven by money. We’re driven by souls. Amen. And so we’re not after money. We’re not after a service. We’re not after our ego or just having big crowds. We’re gifted by God to care about people and to go after souls. And so that’s what we’re called to do. Amen. Amen. And then in the midst of this extremely successful, amazing revival happening in Samaria, God has another assignment for Philip the evangelist.

(18:09):
Look at verse 26. It says, now, an angel of the Lord said to Philip, go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. And so you can imagine Philip getting a little bit upset with God. Say, God, here I am in Samaria. We have a very successful revival happening. He says, why do you want me to go down to the desert road? There’s no one on the desert road. The desert road is hot. Why should I go down to the desert road? Here I am in Samaria. We’re getting very beautiful pictures here in Samaria for my newsletter. Why do you want me to go down to the desert road? But he’s an obedient evangelist. So he goes, and look at what happens. It says, so he started out in, on his way, he met in Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians.

(19:10):
This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship. And on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah, the prophet. The spirit told Philip, go to that chariot and stay near it. Then Philip ran up to the chariot, heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet, do you understand what you’re reading? Philip asked, how can I, he said, unless someone explains it to me. So he invited Philip to come up and to sit with him. So this Ethiopian eunuch had come to Jerusalem to worship Yahweh, the God of Israel. The Ethiopians had a knowledge of Yahweh going all the way back to the Queen of Shiba who had visited King Solomon. And so King Solomon met the queen of Shiba. She took the knowledge of Yahweh back. So this Ethiopian unit, he went to Jerusalem. He wanted to worship God. But when he arrived at the temple, there was a big problem. And it was found in the law of Moses. Over in Deuteronomy chapter 23, verse one, let me read this scripture to you. Look at Deuteronomy chapter 23,

(20:29):
Verse one. This is the law of Moses. It says, no one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the Lord. And no one born of a foreign marriage, nor any of his descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, even down to the 10th generation. And so in Deuteronomy, it said, if you’re emasculated or if you’re a foreigner, you’re not allowed to enter the temple of God. And so this Ethiopian unit, you know what a eunuch is? A eunuch is a man who’s been cut off. Do I need to explain? He’s been cut off. And so he’s maimed. He’s imperfect, and he comes to the temple to worship. And he’s not allowed to come into the temple because he is a foreigner, because he’s imperfect. But yet he has a hunger to know God. And so he buys a scroll, which back then would’ve cost a a year’s wages.

(21:42):
And so that’s, how much would a year’s wages for a man be today? You know, imagine spending 60, 70,000 Euro to buy a copy of Isaiah, and he’s hungry, but he, he’s reading it. He doesn’t understand it. So God sends the evangelist to explain it to him. And so he’s looking at it and says, how can I understand unless someone explains it to me? And Philip, the evangelist is there because God sent him, said, let me explain it to you. And so look at this, it says verse 35, Philip beginning with that very passage of scripture, told him the good news about Jesus. What is the evangelist message? Good news about Jesus, good news about Jesus to Samaria, he preached Christ to the Ethiopian. He shares good news about Jesus. That’s the message of the evangelist. And so the passage he reads from Isaiah is Isaiah chapter 53, the beautiful passage that talks about what Jesus accomplished on the cross about how our sins were placed on Jesus.

(22:51):
And because of him, we can be set free from sin. And so it says He was led like a sheep to the slaughter and as a lamb before the shear is silent. So he did not open his mouth in his humiliation. He was deprived of justice, who can speak of his descendants, for his life was taken from him. So Philip begins in Isaiah 53, but I don’t think he ends there. I think he spent some time with his Ethiopian, and he continued with him until he came to Isaiah chapter 56. So when the writer of the book of Acts wrote this, you know, they would have large portions of scripture memorized. So, so people reading this would’ve, they would’ve instantly, they didn’t have chapter divisions. They put the first couple of verses to remind people of the passage. But it’s, you know, it’s a longer passage that the writer of Acts wants to bring to mind. And so in Isaiah 56, there’s a beautiful passage that talks about what will happen after the Messiah comes, and how there will be a change in the kingdom of God. And so look at Isaiah chapter 56. This, this is, this is amazing. This is so exciting. Every time I read this, I get excited.

(24:22):
Listen to this, this, this is a prophecy. So you remember, Deuteronomy has the law. It says, no one who’s emasculated, no one who’s a foreigner may enter into the kingdom of God or enter into the temple. But here in Isaiah 56, listen to this prophecy about what will happen after the Messiah comes verse three. It says, let no foreigner who has bound himself to the Lord say the Lord shall surely exclude me from his people. And so he’s talking to a foreigner, he’s talking to this Ethiopian. And then it says, and let not any eunuch complain, I am only a dry tree. So he is talking to a foreigner, and he is talking to a eunuch. For this is what the Lord says to the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant, to them, I will give within my temple in its walls a memorial, in a name better than sons and daughters. I will give them an everlasting name, and they will not be cut off

Speaker 2 (25:35):
Glory. Amen. Glory

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (25:40):
And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord, to serve him, to love the name of the Lord, and to worship him and who keep the Sabbath, who will fasten my covenant. These I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. And so imagine the Ethiopian looking at this passage in Isaiah 56, and he had just gone to Jerusalem. They kept him out of the temple. Archeo, archeologists actually have the stone that was at the gate of the temple that said, any foreigner that goes past this point will be killed. They found that in Jerusalem, that stone. So he came there and he is not allowed to enter into worship Yahweh, but Philip is telling him, because of Jesus, everything has changed. Jesus changes everything. And where there used to be lines of separation, they say, now we have a circle of inclusion. And you are included. There is a place for you. Even if you are imperfect, even if you have made mistakes in your life, even if you are a foreigner, even if there’s something different about you, there is a place for you in the house of God. The house of God has room for every person, every nation, every people. There is a room for you because Jesus changes everything. Amen. Amen.

(27:28):
Hallelujah. Amen. Isn’t that good? Powerful. Jesus changes everything. And so look at this, as they traveled around along the road, they came to some water. And then eunuch said, look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized? Or is there anything stopping me from being baptized? And Phillips says, no, there’s nothing that prevents you from having a relationship with God. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. He broke the wall of separation. And now there is a place for every single one of us to come and to have a relationship with God. And so the Ethiopian says, stop the chariot. And they get down out of the chariot, and they go into the water.

(28:30):
The Ethiopian is baptized. And then it says, when they came up out of the water, the spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away. And the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Now, someone today would say to Philip, well, what did you do to follow up on the Ethiopian? Well, the Holy Spirit followed up on the oath, Ethiopian. And it’s a miracle what God did in the life of this Ethiopian. And it says, Philip, however, appeared at as ptosis and traveled about preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea. And it’s in Caesarea that we find him. And he’s there in Acts 21 with his four virgin daughters who all prophesy. And so Caesarea was a city built by Herod the Great and given as a gift to Caesar, the emperor of Rome. And so he built it.

(29:38):
And it was very controversial cuz they included temples to foreign gods, even though he was a Jewish king, they allowed temples to be built. And so it was where all the ships came from, the Roman Empire. And when sailors come off the boats, what did they do? They, they behaved like drunken sailors. But in the midst of this sinful, wicked city that has foreign temples and, and sin on every corner, I don’t know, maybe is a little bit like Amsterdam, I don’t know. But in this place, God sent Philip the evangelist, and he’s there and he’s ministering, he’s evangelizing, telling people about Jesus. And then he has four virgin daughters who all prophesy in the body of Christ. Recently there’s been a controversy about whether women can speak in church. Well, it’s hard for them to speak if it’s hard for them to prophesy if they keep their mouth closed, because I believe God’s raising up women evangelists.

(30:43):
In fact, I think some of the greatest harvest will see will come from women evangelists. Can you say amen? Amen. Amen. Yeah. And so these four virgin father, they ministered right alongside their father. And in the midst of this sinful city, they kept themselves pure and holy. And it would be so tragic to, to lead thousands of people to Jesus, but for your own son or daughter to go to hell. And so this is part of the calling of an evangelist. You go, you travel, you minister in different places, but I believe also we’re called to be ministered together as a family. Today I have my son Caleb here, everyone say hi to Caleb. He’s helping me run the, the program here. I also have my daughter Katie Grace back here. Everyone say hi to Katie Grace. Now this is my beautiful wife, Jessica. Jessica has been a missionary for, for many years. We actually met in Goma Congo, right on the border of Rwanda and Congo. And at that time she was a crusade director. She was helping to set up crusades in, in Africa. And so I was a crusade evangelist. She was a crusade director. When I saw her, I said, wow, this is a match made in heaven, <laugh>.

(31:56):
And when she saw me, she was checking me out. And after 10 seconds, she says, no, I’m not interested. <Laugh>, she didn’t like my haircut. But a year later I went to preach her church in Canada and I had a new haircut. And then we started to date, date <laugh>. And, and I was anointed that day. And so <laugh> now we’ve been married for 15 years, but you know, God doesn’t just call individuals. He calls families. Amen. And so to be part of the family was to be in my life growing up, was to be part of the ministry. And so we’re called to reach the masses, but we’re also called to, to raise up godly children. Amen. Amen. And so let’s finish with some prayer. Could you all stand up to your feet, lift up your hands to heaven, and let’s begin to pray. I believe that in this room we have many who are called to be evangelists. And I believe that today God is going to strengthen that call in your life.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
Yes.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:11):
And I believe that God is going to give new creative ideas for evangelism, new ways to reach people. And today, my prayer is, is that the same anointing that’s on my life for evangelism will come upon your life. Lord, I pray for an impartation right now upon every person here be filled with the Holy Spirit. Yes, Lord, I pray that all the, the signs of an evangelist would be present. Amen. For every evangelist who is here, I pray that they would preach Christ, give them a passion for preaching about Jesus. Lord, I pray for miracles to happen in their ministries. Come on, lift up your hands to heaven. Lord, I pray that their hands would be healing hands, that every person they touch would feel the touch of Jesus. Lord, I pray that they would be able to cast out demons that through the authority of the name of Jesus, amen, that they would be able to take authority over every demonic power. Lord, I pray that wherever they go, that great joy would follow them. Lord, I pray that none of these evangelists here would ever be driven by love of money, but they would be driven by a love for souls and for going after people, for bringing people to Jesus.

(34:49):
Oh, hallelujah. Father God, pour out your spirit upon this place. Oh, hallelujah. Lord. We call for mighty evangelists to be raised up out of this room.

(35:12):
To go to the nations with boldness, even closed nations where it’s hard to preach the gospel. Lord, I pray that you give us the right strategies to go to the hard places, to be pioneer. Evangelists, just like Philip went to Samaria, cross-cultural ministry, cross language groups. Lord, I pray that you would enable us to reach even the one that we would be able to preach to the masses, but that we would also be able to preach to the individual who needs Jesus. I pray that we never take our eyes off of each individual. Lord, we pray for the the every one vision. That’s the theme of this conference that you’ve given to Dr. Billy Wilson to reach every person on earth with the gospel of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit in the next 10 years before 2033, the 2000 year anniversary of the day of Pentecost in the natural. It’s impossible. But God, we know that through you all things are possible. And Lord, I pray that we would be able to reach everyone, everyone throughout the earth, that every person would have a chance to hear the gospel.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Hallelujah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:54):
Hallelujah.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Hallelujah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:57):
Oh, hallelujah.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Hallelujah. Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (37:01):
Come on. Give a great big round of applause to Jesus. Can you feel the presence of God here?

Speaker 3 (37:12):
Jesus,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (37:13):
You are God’s best.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Amen.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:03):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast. We’re talking about evangelism, and today I have a very special guest with me, Pastor Omar Cabrera from Argentina. Thank you for joining me today.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (00:15):
My pleasure to be here.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:17):
It is so wonderful to hear about what God has done in Argentina, and not many people have heard this story, but your father was a very significant evangelist and figure in the history of what God has done in Argentina. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>, could you tell us some about him?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (00:35):
Well he, he got saved because of a miracle that my uncle had. He was going to die at age 18. He was operated on, had a tumor in under his skull, you know, the middle of the skull because of boxing. And school teacher said, you should come to our gym. They have meetings there, they pray for, for the sake. They were all Catholics. And that night they went, they saw a miracle of a guy that was had leprosy, that God had healed. And God healed my uncle. They all followed the Lord. And at age 17, he was already preaching to the Indians in the north of a country and playing his accordion. He, he learned to play the accordion, just to gather the crowds and, and then preach to them. When he was very young at eight, he was, would spend days fasting and praying, getting ready for the mission field.

(01:37):
He would even sleep outside, think saying, I don’t know where God, the Lord’s gonna send me, but I got used to the atmosphere, you know, and sleep outside to get ready for what God’s gonna do in my life. He got married, came to the United States, studied in, in a seminary, home seminary in, in Georgia. After that, he was sent as a missionary to Argentina, and that was his first experience with the supernatural. He went into a chapel that was an Anglican chapel that was not being used, took his mattress and prayed and fasted for 40 days before the crusade, and the crusade started, and it never stopped. I mean, 18 months long. And he still was preaching night after night while they were already building the, the building, the champ, the temple

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:32):
And still going today, <laugh>.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (02:34):
Yeah,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:35):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. What year was that? That the,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (02:37):
The, the first cru the previous time, the first crusade was in Concordia enter Rios, Argentina. And that was in 65. And Wow. He stayed as a missionary till 64 there, came back for a furlough year in 71.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:54):
Yeah.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (02:55):
And after that six months of just waiting, you know, he said, no, I, I, I, I can’t live like this. I gotta go do something. So he started working for Morris Salo Oh, wow. In San Diego. Organized his Spanish department there organized the crusade in Puerto Rico, Miami, and others. And after that,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:19):
So he, he was helping organize for Morris Cillo.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (03:22):
Yeah. He was Wow. His advanced crusade manager, dance man. Yeah. for his Hispanic crusades. And two years later he said, you know, I have to go back. He would cry at night in San Diego, in the apartment we had, I was in first grade, by the way, by then, you know, in San Diego. Yeah. And would cry all night. And one of the nights the Lord said, I’m going to give you a special love for my lost sheep of the Catholic church. An audible voice told him, Futuro, which is the name of the ministry, he started in 72. He went back to Argentina with an offering from Morris that was the first seed, and had his first crusade. We have that in the black, a black and white video Wow. Archives in BC on the Futuro YouTube channel. There’s mm-hmm. <Affirmative> you could, you could find that there. And we had about 45,000 people in that crusade that we did in, in, in Santa Fe.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:31):
What year was

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (04:32):
The event? That was like 73, 74. Okay. First had a crusade in Ana with one of our Morris’s associates out Fido. And that’s when persecution broke out. The police would come with tear gases the horse police would come and disperse the crowds. And the mayor even wanted to charge a religious tax because so many people would come to the city. There’s another, an only entrance from all the states to Rios by tunnel under the river. And they had to put all the staff on the second Saturday because so many people would come to my dad’s event. And it, it was called a touristic attraction. So the new mayor said, no, you’re gonna pay me a, a religious tax. And he said, well, the day you can bite your coat elbow, I’ll do it. <Laugh>. And that broke persecution. And the police came and we ended up in front of the mayor’s palace.

(05:40):
And that’s where he preached, you know, he took the 50 buses that had come from all over and preached there. And when the police arrived, he said, okay, next month we’ll meet in another state, another town 200 kilometers away. And because of the persecution it mushroomed like the primitive church, you know, all over if we, he would rent sports arenas because of all the healings, a lot of clinics lost their clients. The doctors would influence the police. And, you know, they would close the meetings or they would go to the club and say, we’re not gonna treat your, your players if you have Cabrera. And they would say, you know, even though we had contracts, they would say, you know, you can no longer well have the event here. Yeah. So all of that kept allowing the, the word of God to continue Na you know, state by state, city by city.

(06:50):
After 28 years of ministry, he, he had 145 cities where he had church. Wow. Where he had been established, you know, and a lot of times the meetings would be in an arena, like in Kuman, we had 12,000 people every time he went every 15 days. And it was Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And in another boxing arena, it was Thursdays and Fridays and in different cities at the same time. Right. Yeah. And there, you know, he had two groups of people that would go ahead with bus, you know sound system and the literature and the Bibles. He would sell a lot of Bibles and he would be preaching 28 nights every month, around 145,000 people face to face every month. Wow. A lot of this is written. Wow, that’s amazing. In, in Peter Wagner’s books. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>, you can get a lot of the information there.

(07:56):
When he came and looked at the church, he called it the second largest in the world. Cuz he had been with Cho, he had seen what Cho was doing and what, what was happening in Argentina at that time. And he would really go into the town before opening it, pray fast stay away when in the spirit. But then he would go and see happen in the natural the first night of the meetings, you know, and a lot of times while he was in prayer, he would have visions of a policeman, okay, they’re gonna arrest me tomorrow. He would put his suit on a tie, get ready, <laugh> wait at the lobby of the hotel. And sure enough, there was a police take him in. You know, we have to question you. What are you doing? Oh. But I have the permits. You know, we were living in a very rough time when the ministry started. All the gorilla movement, the 30,000 that disappeared in Argentina, you know, the military in charge of the government. And, and so, you know, we had to get permits, but I have the permit. No, no, no. But you come with us. And a lot of times, you know, they would hold him till the end of the service and that’s okay, you can go now. Thank you. That’s how my mom ended up preaching <laugh>. So much of a wow

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:22):
Crusades. And so you grew up in that atmosphere? Yeah. What was that like? Were you involved in the ministry? Well

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (09:30):
See what was happening. I remember one day, it was Father’s Day and we were surprising my father showing up. He was staying in a hotel across from the theater where they were going to have the, the meeting full of people. And the moment he gets off of the elevator and comes out, the police takes them. And we, we see that scene and we turn around and look at Mom. Cuz you know, the, the whole, the theater had a, a, a, a aisle in the middle, so you could see, and there’s mom looking at all of that leading worship and seeing how he’s taken and thinking, okay, I have to preach today. Right. Father’s Day. And they just tell them, there, give him a blanket. You know, you stay here. No, no, no, no, no. I want the judge to come. I want this to be written down. You’re holding me here, you’re kidnapping me. You know? And, and they was like, take it easy. I mean, mine is a political title, so if I don’t do this, I can lose my job. My family goes to your meetings. My daughter was healed. She was deaf. I mean, you know, they would know him and and know what he was doing, but still had to stop the,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:53):
Talk to me about the anointing that was on your father’s life. Mm. Often people have a specific message. That’s their life message that mm-hmm. <Affirmative> God has given them. What, what were some of the things that God gave your father that were unique?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (11:10):
Well, there was a lot of healings in his services creative miracles. I, I could think of many of the miracles that after the Miracle happened, the whole city just opened to the gospel. A lady fell from a three story building down to the floor because of trying to catch her daughter. And in mid-air, she turned around, grabbed her daughter and hugged her. And they both fell. And the weight of the bait of the girl, in fact two, broke all her ribs.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:48):
Wow.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (11:50):
And, you know, you can’t put a cast. It’s like you can’t breathe. So her ribs were welded like this so she could feel those protrusions like that, like over bones and is what they call them in Argentina, sore whistle. She could feel them here and here. She had her head, so her skull went in. She could actually put all four fingers straight in like that. Wow. The sight is back there. So she couldn’t see from one of her eyes. She would go on the bike and because of not being able to read depth would hit people, they all thought she was a little crazy. She worked for a dry cleaning service, taking clothes to the different houses. So everybody knew her in town. She goes to the meeting and God started working on her ribs. And the ribs got back together as they should have been before the accident.

(12:51):
And she says, and by the way, when I fell, I had this. And she goes like this. And God had put the skull back together in place, recreated the skull, recreated wherever the hole was right there. And immediately her eyesight was healed. Well, the next night we, we had such a crowd. There was people outside and they had to do two services cuz of such a crowd. Same thing happened in Santo Tome. That was in San San in Santa Fe. The other miracle was in Santo Tome in the state of Santa Fe. This lady was born, I mean, this little girl was born without her ear lobe. She just had a little, like a, a grain, the small, the size of a, a a, a corn. Yeah. You know, just a little thing like that. And hole. And the father and her mother took her there, forgot to heal her.

(14:06):
A lady was next to her, and she’s still in our ministry after 45, 50 years. Saw the moment when the ear started being created. Wow. The ear lobe. And it, my father saw it from the platform and he said, he was like, when you have a balloon that has been deflated and somebody starts blowing, it just goes like that. Yeah. Just blows up. And it just came out, out, out, out, out like that. And the moment it finished, like a wave of power hit that lady that she fell under the power, hit my father on stage, he fell too. People were crying and receiving miracles all over the place. And my father just couldn’t preach. He was taken out to the car, back to the hotel, and they carried him to his bed. Mm. 15 minutes later he said they came to pick him up.

(15:19):
What, what do you need? Oh, you have to go to the service. You left me 15 minutes ago. Said, no, no, no. That was yesterday. It was like he was in another dimension. Well, and I mean, it was like 24 hours. Yeah. He felt like was 15 minutes. And he said the worker said, we came to look for our badges. Why? Well, the police had surrounded the arena. We were at four blocks away. You can’t get in. The crowd had heard of the Miracle, and it was such a crowd that the workers were not allowed in to set up because there were so many people waiting. Wow. during that service. And the next right there they ended up asking some nuns that had come to help pick up the offering. Cause we had, we didn’t have enough workers. Wow. So, yeah. Wow. And every time that God has done something supernatural like that, it’s like the whole city. It’s God’s publicity, I would call it. You know, he would say miracles are like bells that toll calling people onto Salvation Catholic society for mass. You know, the bells would bring. And sure. People would come to mass. And so he, he used the miracles as an analogy of, you know, God doing that, calling people to come to meet the Lord.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:03):
And what impact did your father’s ministry have on the nation of Argentina?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (17:09):
Well, he was the one in that time that was so hard that the opened the ground, the ground had been hardened. Churches were very small. We had had a previous manifestation of God when Tommy Hicks came and even ended up meeting with the President Perron at that time. And Perron gave him the stadium where he had the crusade. My father was part of the committee that was there with when Tommy Hicks was there. Oh. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people heard the gospel back then, but the church was not ready for the fruit.

(17:51):
And my father doing this spiritual exercise of going into the city, opening the heavens, praying for the strong man to be bound and being able to reap the fruit, left open heavens for many churches to grow after he would be there. And Aldo said, since Cab is here our churches have multiplied, have grown. One of them said, you built my church. My father thought, cuz he was a very generous man, and he would sow in other ministries that he had given him an offering, you know, to build his building. But she said, no, no, no. I had less than 50 people. Now I have a thousand since you came into town. And a lot of those churches even in, in Cordova for example, where he was persecuted a lot, not only by the government, but other pastors honored him to any years later saying, you’ve been an apostle to this city.

(19:03):
You were the one that brought the key for us to open the city for the gospel pastors that now have 10,000, you know, members. Yeah. Or 2000 or a thousand members. They honored my father as being that influence that opened cities. As a matter of fact, when he passed the mantle to me, he says, and I’m giving you the key for you to open. Wow. Sitting for the gospel. He passed me the mantle when we had a convention in our yearly convention in Cordova in touristic Town. And the very first night he said, I’m gonna do something Holy Spirit told me to do eight months ago. And he called me forward and said, I’m passing you the mantle. I’m giving you the presidency of the church.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:53):
And you weren’t expecting it.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (19:55):
I was not expecting

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:56):
It. How old were you when that happened?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (19:57):
37.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:58):
Wow. So you had been serving in the ministry

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (20:01):
Helping the same age? Cindy Jacobs had her first vision of the Lord. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative> Claudia Freon, same age. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>, when he had the anointing fall on him and started ministering. And, you know, we were comparing those on that. And he did it that Monday night. We had the convention till Friday morning and Friday morning we were finishing and he said, no, you’re, you’re, you’re in charge. You finished the convention. So I closed the convention with the communion service. And when I went down to serve him communion, you know, the cup, it dawned on me, this is for real. This is happening. You know. Wow. And that night he flew back to Buenos Aires. It was raining in Buenos Aires. He got soaked, got on a cab cab, took two hours to get to his place cuz it was flooded. When he got to his place, he couldn’t breathe. He called the ambulance, ended up in the hospital, had a couple of heart attacks at night, was in a coma, medicated coma for two weeks and passed away.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:14):
Wow. So when, when God showed him to pass it onto you, he did it in the the time of God. Yeah. Wow. We, and then what did that feel like for you to suddenly now have this, this mantle put on your shoulders? Well, I never, I,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (21:30):
You know, I never had a chance to ask him, what do he want me to do? Yeah. You know, I, I mean, I was serving the Lord. I was in the Bible school that we had, I was pastoring in, in the, in the town in Rafaela, you know, in Little Town. Then I went to Golo. So I was in the ministry I was serving. I even went and studied in the seminary to prepare for that. But when 145 cities almost a hundred employees all of that fell. I felt the weight of a great responsibility. A friend came from Guatemala and he said, you call it a responsibility. What if you call it an opportunity? And the moment he said that, it was like the vision changed. And I felt I was standing on my father’s shoulders taking note of everything that he had left me. All the properties, the staff, the trained leaders, the literature

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (22:43):
What a legacy, the

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (22:44):
Impact, the legacy, you know. And I thought, wow, all I can do with what I have. Cause my fear was, I don’t know if I have shoulders for all this, if the weight is not gonna be too big. New pastors that had taken over and, you know, the work that the pioneers had done with such sacrifice was half the size and churches would, you know, put a wall and not even that half that could feel. And I was like, I don’t want that. I don’t want to do that. I mean, it was such a weight. But the moment this friend come, came from Guatemala and told me that. And from there we grew 240 churches and 20 years so many other programs that were, started the television and the whole continent. And then lase for 17 years, a national Christian network that preaches our, our sermons. The Sunday sermon in a thousand Cities. And the seminary site that we’re building. I mean, it’s so many, so many projects. That’s amazing. It’s amazing what God has done

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (24:06):
Well, but it all started with just going and preaching the gospel.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (24:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. back in 72, we were just a few. And that first crusade preaching the gospel and, and showing signs and wonders to confirm the word. And God always, you know, giving us a strategy at the key moment to continue.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (24:32):
Was your father’s style similar to Morris Cillo or did he Yes. Did. Was he different?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (24:39):
No, he, he was, even in the sense, like Morris rule, that he had schools of ministry would train people. He trained a lot of people

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (24:50):
Raise up an army

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (24:52):
To hear my voice. <Laugh>. Yeah. Yeah. he, he trained a lot of people and signs and wonders and would take him with him in the crusades. That’s how I got to, to see firsthand. You know, I would go with him in the crusades. He would call the he the sick. He would always minister about one illness. God would show him what he was going to do in that service and he would say, okay, all of you that have hernias, all of you that have problems in your skull, cuz it, it got indented or got hit and it’s, you know, bochy. And they would all come to the front. So we would walk with them and, you know, start asking people, what did you have and how long and what were the symptoms? And,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (25:47):
You know Yeah.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (25:48):
And we would see God’s power move. A lady I once told me, oh, I’m my believer son. Cuz I was like 13, 14. It’s like, I have more years of believing than you have of life, you know? And she had a big hernia. And my father prayed and I said, well, what happened? Oh son. And she went like this and she missed it. It was so big that she went like that and couldn’t find it. Wow. It disappeared completely. I mean, the size of a, a cantaloupe. Wow. And she goes, I can’t believe it. And I go, I thought you were a believer. <Laugh>. So seeing that firsthand, you know, it just,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (26:34):
Yeah. So what was the process of your father would go into a city? He would do a crusade. He

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (26:42):
Would start, he would go ahead and stay in a hotel at least seven days, praying and fasting. Wow. usually my mom would go two, three months prior to that. Get the permits and they would choose the city based on the rallies that he would have. And, you know, a lot of buses would come from other towns. So usually when they had 15, 20 big buses coming to this meeting, he would, they would say, well, two, three months from now, we’ll be in your town. So with, even without publicity,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (27:20):
People would know about it. Yeah. And, and then how were churches planted?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (27:25):
The rally would continue.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (27:27):
How long would it usually go? It would be a week, two weeks.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (27:32):
Well, the Crusades originally, yes. But when the persecution was so strong, they would stay two, three days. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative> like a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, you know, and leave. By the time they were starting getting ready to shoot at us, that’s how my dad would put it. Yeah. we would, we’d be gone. But the people knew that 15 days from now we’d be back. And since it was sporadic

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (28:00):
Were And the stadium would fill Yeah. Every time.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (28:03):
Every time. Yeah. at first the Crusades, you know, the 71, 72, I mean 72, 73, 74, they were longer. As a matter of fact, I’m going now this September to a, a city that he was invited to go by another pastor, and it’s gonna be their 50th anniversary. It was in 73. There, it was so supernatural. The bus, the ambulances were like 10, 15 ambulances would be waiting to go into the stadium to leave their sick. And the power of God fell. People heard from other cities, Christians and come buses. And the moment they crossed the city limits, they’d be filled with the spirit. Wow. People that were even in the main square complaining to the government because of bad salaries would be filled with the spirit in the main square. And a lot of times crowds would be so large coming from all over. By the time the a week, 10 days crusade would finish, we couldn’t even get gasoline to leave town. So we had to stay one or two more days till they

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (29:37):
Would, because so many people had come. Right. Yeah.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (29:39):
Wow. Or there was, you know, a food. So shortage. Wow. It was a tremendous.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (29:46):
What what is your greatest memory of your father? How did he most impact your life?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (29:56):
The time before going on stage. You know, I would usually walk with him till he got on stage. My mom would be introducing him. Here’s a man of God who’s a man of faith that has helped thousands to receive a miracle in their lives with you. The servant of God. And I will be right there with him and I could hear him whisper Holy Spirit. I open myself to you and the ministry of your angels minister, life and power.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (30:34):
And he’d pray that prayer. He

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (30:35):
Would do that before, every time before Wow. Going on stage, opening himself for the leading of the Holy Spirit. And he would be so sensitive, you know, he would be preaching and sometimes would in parenthesis say, and this comes from the School of the Spirit. And what he meant was, I had never thought of this, I have never studied this, but this comes straight from God revelation. And would, he would give a nugget of truth. You know. And well, we would study that and like, wow, Lord, wow, this is amazing. Or even there’s a person here that you know, and, and flow in the words of knowledge and, and, and see the power of God. You know, bring such healing to the people. Once in Corola he was hearing testimonies and looked at a girl that was in the front row and went like that to her and a stream of light. Everybody saw it.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (31:39):
Wow.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (31:40):
And she had extra vimo, you know, the eyes were like crooked in the middle, like almost behind the nose. Yeah. If you could. And they got straight Wow. Immediately. And the crusade where the ambulances were coming in, he saw a light come on a man. And he said, sir, you’ve been healed. Get up. Get up. I can’t get up in the name of Jesus. You are healed. And he says, no, I can’t. I only have my underwear. <Laugh>. Well wrap yourself on your, in that sheet and just get up

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (32:16):
And walk. You’ve been

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (32:16):
Healed. And sure enough, he got up, you know, like a wow. Greek with a tunic.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (32:23):
<Laugh>. Was there any, anyone meeting that was huge that you remember that what, what was the largest event? Did he ever do? The city of Buenos Aires. And

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (32:33):
He, in the city of Buenos Aires, he went to a boxing arena. Yeah. And it only had like five no 3000 in capacity. But the whole entrance was full of people standing and a black and white 19 inch television where they could see him. And a speaker that, you know, would pr you know, the sound of the image did not coincide, but we were, and people would stand all the way out and stop the avenue traffic. At, at that Buenos Aires, the biggest ones were in the center of the country in Cordova, for example, he had a, a, like a seven day crusade for anniversary. And they had like 48,000 people there that every night in the soccer stadium in Cordova. Another, another soccer stadium also. You know, like, but

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:30):
You said earlier he was preaching like 28 nights a month. Uhhuh <affirmative>. How, for how many years did that go? That he was preaching that much?

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (33:38):
Like for 15 years.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:39):
So for 15 years. And it was every month.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (33:42):
And after that we continued doing the rallies. But he would only go to like 15. Not, not, you know, half of them. Cuz he had all the workers that he had already trained. Yeah. You know, the army like Morris. Yeah. that he had left, you know, had trained to go and do the work. So if he wouldn’t go, others would, a lot of times it would happen to us. I was 19 and the driver of the truck that would take the sound with me was 23. And we would get the phone call at the kitchen of the place cuz no cell phones back then. And we would just like, oh, he’s not coming.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:28):
He’s not,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (34:29):
Can get you enough. You know, we’d go and Yes, no, I’m not going. So you do this and have my son do that and da da da da da. So I was like,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:41):
Wow.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (34:42):
That’s how he would pray us. We had to be ready. <Laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:45):
You were ready And, and you started to preach in the crusades. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. How old were you when you first,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (34:51):
I, I started, I’ve been with him, you know, worship leader since I was like 15. Yeah. 14, 15. And after I came back from, or Oral Roberts when I was 23, I started going to the crusades and preaching back then at that age when I was 28, I got my first pastorate, but he didn’t give me a a church. He gave me a region of 33 cities. So that’s how I started pastoring

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:25):
And said, go, go plant churches.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (35:27):
No, no. These were churches that were already established. And the pastor was taken away from there. And he said, okay, you, you take go.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:37):
He gave you the region. He

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (35:38):
Gave me the region. 33 cities at age 28. Wow. And you know, we would go and have rallies and crusades and meetings at clubs and arenas and fields that we had pro purchased and everything. And as the crusades continued, you know, sooner or later we would buy the building and move to our own site. And that’s how we do it even till this day, you know. And for

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:12):
And so you’re still doing rallies and crusades? Yeah,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (36:15):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. We have a lot of sales mm-hmm. <Affirmative>, we work with cell groups and we have in a stadium our all night prayer visual and it seats 12,000 and we have to give tickets cuz a lot of times more people come and it’s a long service. Sure. So you don’t want people to stand outside. Yeah. so we have an all night prayer vigil for the last 10 years now that we do on Good Friday to pray for the nation. And we use a a stadium for that. We use a stadium for our conventions. The last one we had before Covid, we had 19,000 people pay their tickets to be in the convention, in, in Cordova three day convention. And since Covid, a lot of the venues have closed and the stadium has different laws. So we do a morning and evening like 10 10,000 and 10,000 or where we had, we had 8,000 and 8,000 the last one.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (37:28):
Wow. Mm-hmm. <Affirmative>. Well, thank you so much for sharing with me how God has impacted Argentina. Did your father ever go to other nations or just mostly focused on Argentina? He

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (37:39):
Went to other nations to teach on what God had shown him. You know how to do spiritual warfare. Yeah. How to pray to open the city for the Lord. How to raise up leaders to do the work of the ministry all over world.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (37:58):
And so since you’ve been on in lase, you’re known all over. Yeah. Not in America.

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (38:02):
Yeah, that’s true.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (38:04):
Has the ministry expanded to other nations? No. No. Are you just

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (38:07):
Mostly focused on No, we feel our call is there. Some of our pastors, you know, have, well leaders have moved to other nations and they have groups, but they’re not part of the, of our network. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (38:25):
Well, thank you for sharing with me. That’s powerful,

Pastor Omar Cabrera, Jr. (38:28):
Daniel. Pleasure.

How to Work with a Translator

It’s common to need a translator when you’re evangelizing in other countries, but it isn’t always easy to work with a translator effectively. In this episode, we’ll talk about how you can better work with a translator so that you can clearly communicate the gospel no matter where you are in the world.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:27):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Dr. Daniel King (00:51):
So next, let’s talk about how to work with a translator. So this is something that really comes with practice, but if you’ve never worked with a translator before it it, it takes a little bit of getting used to. But there’s some things, some ideas here that will help you to be effective at working with a translator. So the first idea I have is that when you’re working with a translator, I always try to sit down with him before the service begins and kind of go over an outline of what I’m going to say. I find that that solves a lot of problems if you can just sit down with him and say this is what I’m gonna share. If you’re using any unusual concepts or ideas, explain them to him so that in advance, he would already know kind of where you’re going with the sermon, show him what scripture you’re using, and often a translator will look at the scripture and then he’ll pull out his Bible and pull out the ribbon and put the ribbon into the portion of scripture.

(01:53):
And so that way it really helps you when you get up on the platform. You don’t have to you don’t have to waste three or four minutes, you know, three or $4,000 waiting, looking for the scripture. You can go, go right to it. And, and, and, and explain concepts. Like, like when I do a pastor’s conference, there’s an illustration I use about going and visiting a, a huge cave. And, and so I’ll share that. But often I find that the word cave is kind of the obscure word that it translated. Even if they know a lot of English, they may not know the word cave. And so beforehand, I’ll explain to ’em, do you know what a cave is? It’s just this big hole under the ground and usually translate. Oh, yeah, yeah. We have caves here in our country. And so he can think about the word that he would use in his language to, to do that.

(02:37):
When you work with a translator, use short sentences and pause in between each sentence. So you would share a sentence and then let them translate the sentence. So one of the mistakes a lot of beginning preachers make is like, they’ll, they’ll do a whole paragraph. Yeah. Like, they’ll forget that there’s a translator there. And so they’ll get up and they’ll be like you know, I’m so happy to be here today, and I flew in and da, da, da, da, da. And so like a minute later they’re like, oh, yeah, I have a translator. And then he like, has a whole paragraph or two paragraphs to share. And so you, you want to say one sentence, let him say it, but you, you don’t wanna break up your thought into two small pieces. So that one problem is sharing a whole paragraph of material.

(03:21):
The other problem is like doing it word by word. Like, this is such a great audience like that. That’s the other end of the spectrum. And the problem is that in some languages, they reverse the, the word order. So like in Spanish, do you speak Spanish? You speak some Spanish. So how would you say the the the, the, the very big man in Spanish Grand Re the, the big man. You know, and, and then, so in English, we say the man is big in Spanish, they’d say the, the big man, or, you know, so, so you have a language where if you’re translating in Spanish, if you don’t share the whole thought, sure. Then they, like, you can get into a thought. And if you don’t share the whole thought, the translator will be lost. Then he has to go back to fix it later.

(04:21):
So you guys share the whole thought. It’s great speaking with a translator because you can use that time to think about what your next sentence is. So with one ear, I’m kind of listening to my translator, making sure he’s keeping up with me. But in my head, I’m thinking about the next thing. Why? Because every word is important. That’s, that’s my thousand dollar minute there. I wanna use it wisely. So think give the translator time to translate. So when, when you’re speaking sometimes people get so excited and they’re a fast preacher, and so the translator’s speaking, and like, they’ll start stepping on the translator’s line. So the, the translator gets half his line out, and then they’ll start with their next line. And the translator has to stop what he’s doing and kinda listen to what the other person is doing.

(05:06):
And, and so you got to give him time to translate. Don’t step on him too much, right as he finishes his final thought, then you can start going into your next one. And if you get a good transl, like a good translator can really work with you. A good translator can go, go fast. But if you have someone who’s just a beginning translator, sometimes you have to, to really work with them. And, and so you that’s why you have to articulate your words really well. Use good pronunciation in your words, because people from different countries have different accents. Not everyone understands an American accent. And so use your words precisely with good pronunciation. And, and even like sometimes with a, a platform, it’s very difficult for the the translator to hear what you’re saying. And so you’re over here preaching to the crowd, and the translator is behind you.

(06:07):
He can’t really see your lips move. And if there’s not good monitors, he can’t even hear what you’re saying. And so sometimes you have to turn and face your translator and kind of speak. Sometimes, even if, if there’s not a good monitor situation, I’ll have my translator come and stand right next to me. And, and I’ll be like this. So he actually hears my voice. And, and I always tell my translator in advance. I say, whatever I do, you do. If I, if I start to shout, then you start to shout. If I go into a whisper like this, then I want you to whisper. If I get all excited and start jumping around, you get excited. If I’m giving a, a Bible illustration and talk about the, the man who was the leper and came to Jesus and knelt down before Jesus, if I kneel down, you kneel down whatever I do.

(06:52):
And so sometimes people have never translated before. You kinda have to train him in your expectation. And so it’s your job as the evangelist to get the evangelist, to get the translator to know what he’s supposed to be doing. And so I kind of, even in the middle of a sermon, I’m kind of training him and, and telling him what he’s supposed to be doing. Don’t use puns, idioms, colloquialisms or slangs. So I had someone come to Mexico and he had a great sermon. It’s about joy, j o y, Jesus, others, and you, J is for Jesus. You put ’em first place, oh is for others. You meet face to face. Why is for you? And whatever you do, put yourself third and spell joy. So that’s a great message, and he preaches this whole message. But the problem is that in Spanish, what’s the word for joy in Spanish?

(07:42):
Goso goso. And so G O Z O doesn’t spell Jesus. Ro he was dead. It’s completely different. So the entire point of his sermon didn’t even work because it was in a different language. And so you have to be very careful about what you say. We’ve got all kinds of colloquialisms here in America that translators maybe are not familiar with. Like, if they are really good translators, maybe they can get it. Otherwise, they’re just making stuff up and saying it to the crowd. You have no idea what they’re saying. And so, so here’s some ideas. The lights are on, but nobody is home. Well, what does that actually mean? Mm-Hmm. It means that someone is stupid. They don’t know what they’re doing. So just say that. Say he was, he was dumb. The devil’s dumb. Hmm. when pigs fly, what does that mean?

(08:38):
It means something’s impossible. Well say that. Go, go with the simple language to pig out. What does that mean? Well, if an evangel translator, he doesn’t necessarily know what it means to pig out. Maybe he’s never heard that before. Maybe you’re in a Muslim country and it’s offensive to talk about pigs. So why are you talking about picking out? Just say the man overate. Bring home the bacon. What does that mean? <Laugh>? You gotta bring home the bacon. We got all these pig metaphors. None of them work. Just tell him, you gotta the man, don’t, don’t, don’t tell a story and say, the man worked hard to bring home the bacon. You’ll just confuse the translator. He won’t know what you’re talking about. Just tell him he worked hard to make money to feed his family. So a whole list here of words that, and so that’s why you gotta practice your sermon. Think through your sermon. Think about how is my sermon going to impact the people that I’m speaking to?

(09:41):
How are they going to hear it? How are they going to receive it? How are they going to understand it? And so we’re coming from a very western mindset, a very affluent country. Let me give you an example. I got a friend who went to India to preach, and he was sharing an illustration with a group of pastors. And the illustration when he says, one time I was driving my car, I ran outta gas and I was stuck beside the road. I didn’t have any money. I didn’t have my credit cards, he says, but then I remembered that in the back of my wallet, there was a hundred dollars bill that I had hidden tucked into the back of my wallet. So I was able to pull out this a hundred dollars bill and go and pay for the gas and praise God, God provided.

(10:26):
And so the, the point of his story was that even when you’re in a difficult situation that God will provide, that’s a wonderful story. But he’s speaking to a group of pastors and not one of the pastors has a car. In fact, the richest of the pastors there has a bicycle. Yeah. Right? And rides the bicycle. And so when you say, I had a car and my car broke down, you’re thinking, man, that’s a bad day to have your car break down beside the road. And you know what the pastor might be thinking? Wow, he’s got a car. He is a rich guy. Yeah. The exact opposite of what you’re trying to communicate. Exactly. And then you’re in a country where, you know those villagers, you know, if they make a dollar a day, they’re doing pretty well. Yeah. And so for you to tell a story that I hit a hundred dollars bill in the back of my wallet, you know, that’s like I accidentally misplaced a third of a year’s wages.

(11:24):
Right? Completely different story that he was trying to communicate. And so there is a way that he could have communicated that story more effectively that would’ve been culturally relevant and specific to them. Yeah. Right? Cool. And really, I find that if you’re gonna share stories, great stories are the Bible stories. You know, the Bible stories are simple. Everyone has the Bible in their own language. You can share those simple Bible stories. And, and, and so there, there are stories that you can tell. But think about it before you just share a story. Say, how are people going to perceive this? What are they going to hear when I share this story? What are they going to think? How are people going to understand this? You know, in, in, in some country, you talk about being on the internet and you know, everyone has a cell phone.

(12:14):
You can, you could share an illustration about a cell phone, and probably most of the crowd would have a cell phone. There’s other countries where not many people would have cell phones. And so you wanna be careful about sharing that story about your cell phone. So it just depends stop using Christiane’s vocabulary. Yeah. So in the church, we have a lot of vocabulary that can only be understood in the church. My wife went and organized a crusade in Papa New Guinea. And it was, it was a Hindu crowd. And they thought that the name of the Christian God was hallelujah. Because that’s what the Christians were saying all the time. The Christians were always saying, hallelujah. And so they just thought, well, that must be the name of your God. You say it so much, you’re, you’re worshiping him. And so they thought, we serve the God. Hallelujah.

(13:09):
Hallelujah. Well, hallelujah. It’s a little bit of a Christian. It’s a good Christian term. But you, if you’re, you know, if you’re gonna say it, say hallelujah. That’s a word that means praise the Lord. Explain it. I heard a preacher one time, he talked about how the, the veil was torn. Well, before someone can understand what it means that the veil was torn, first of all, you have to understand what the tabernacle was, what the temple was, the holy of Holies. You gotta have a teaching on the temple furnishings. You gotta have all that symbolism. And then after you have all that understanding, then you can maybe understand what it means to say the veil was torn. Well, what was he trying to say? He, he was trying to say, Jesus has the victory. When Jesus died, he purchased the victory. And, and, and all the devil’s plans were destroyed.

(13:59):
The, the, the, the barrier between God and man was destroyed. And so he used what is Christian shorthand said that the veil has been torn. But you can’t understand that Christian shorthand unless you’ve had extensive teaching in that area. And so all the Christians in the audience, they’ll say, hallelujah. Praise the Lord. That’s good preaching. But as an evangelist, you’re not really there for the Christians in the crowd. You know, you might have a crowd that’s 30% Christian, 70% non-Christian. Well, your job as an evangelist is great to have the Christians there. You gotta have ’em. We want them. They’re the ones responsible for the follow up after the crusade, you know? So it’s great to have the Christians, but really, if you’re just preaching to the Christians, you’re not doing what an evangelist is supposed to do. Exactly. You’re supposed to communicate the, to the on believers who have no experience with Christianity, no background.

(14:56):
And so you gotta start very basic. When I hold up a Bible, I don’t tell them this is the Bible. What does the word Bible mean? It, the Bible just means book. And so I’ll hold up the Bible and I’ll say, this is God’s book. That’s pretty basic. If I mention Adam and Eve, I explain who Adam and Eve are. Adam and Eve, were the first man, the first woman that God ever created. If I mention the word sin, I explain what sin is. We have an idea in our culture what sin is. But you gotta realize, you, you, you know what sin is because you’ve been taught, you probably, maybe you grew up in a Christian home, you’ve kind of had that concept. But in, in some cultures, there’s less of an idea of sin, and there’s more of a, a shame based culture where they’re like, shame is a much better, bigger deal than an individual sin.

(15:53):
And, and, and so if I talk about sin, I explain what it is. Sin is when you disobey God’s command, God gave the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve instructions, he says, do not lie. Do not steal. But yet they lied and they stole. And the Bible says that everyone has broken God’s commands. We have all lied. We have all stolen. We have all had hate in our heart towards our brother. These things are sin. And so once you define it, then you can use it for the rest of the message, and they’ll know what you’re talking about, but you gotta define it first. So be sensitive to cultural differences. Be cautious about telling jokes. There’s, there’s a lot of people that have made mistakes and how they tell jokes, humor is sometimes difficult.

In this episode, we’ll talk about how to tell a story well at a crusade, and how to use it as a tool to be more effective in your evangelism.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:29):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist, Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:53):
Alright, let’s go to the next session here. How to tell a story. I think this is an important part of communicating is learning how to tell a story. In our culture. In the Western culture we tend to think in terms of lists. So you’ll have like a, B, C, 1, 2, 3. But in many other cultures around the world people communicate more through stories than what we do in our culture. The western culture is designed to be ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba like that. But in other cultures, you tell a story, let people discover truth in the story. And you’ll notice that in the Bible. Jesus frequently told stories. He says, there was a farmer who went down to his field. The he’ll talk about the birds of the air. He, he says, there was a man who went on a long journey.

(01:57):
Jesus was always telling stories. And so I think stories are an effective way to communicate the gospel. And Jesus didn’t even always explain the meaning of his stories. Sometimes his disciples had a quorum, says, what does that mean? And Jesus would explain to the disciples, but tells the story and let people figure it out. And so I, one time I, I saw a magician, and the magician just loved doing all of his tricks and everything. And, and like he did a 20 minute show, and he probably did like a hundred tricks in that 20 minute show. He was pulling handkerchiefs out of everywhere and, and everything. And he did lots of amazing things in his show, but it was nothing he did was very memorable. Then I saw another magician, and this magician did just one trick, but he kind of told a funny story with it.

(02:44):
He had everyone in the audience laughing and, and stuff. And even though the trick that he did was very simple, people remembered it and loved it because of the story that this magician told. And so the magician who did like the hundred tricks he did, what sometimes preachers do, sometimes preachers go and they’ll say, you know, this Greek verse means that, and that Greek word means that. And let me tell you what this commentary says. And you know, they’re so impressed with all the knowledge that they have, and they’re trying to impress the audience that they forget that the goal is to communicate the gospel to people, to, to, to, and, and to get it down into their heart. And stories are an effective way to do that. So here’s some keys to telling a story. I know the story. Don’t read the story. Know the story.

(03:34):
Give your story a good introduction. Give the story some good narration. Use dialogue pause and pace. Use sound effects when telling the story. Involve your audience in the telling of the story. And then make a, a great application with the story. And a specific story with details is more powerful than just a general story. And, and so if I’m sharing a healing testimony, I will turn it into a story. One time I went to Ethiopia, it’s about 30% Muslim, but the part of the country that we were in had a higher percentage of Muslims than that. And so as we were going out into the neighborhoods and we were putting up posters and, and banners for the crusade, there was a group of young Muslims who came and they were tearing down the, the posters. And then they actually started a riot and they threw a brick through the front windshield of our publicity vehicle.

(04:33):
And the police were called. And they said that our team had started the riot. And so 17 of our Ethiopian team members were thrown into jail, and we had to get a lawyer to, to get him out the next day. And so the first night of the crusade there, there weren’t very many people there because nobody knew about what was happening because all the posters and the banners had been torn down. But I said, God, you have to do something there. This crusade is gonna be a failure because nobody knows about it. And so the second night, there was a man, his name was Mohammed, and Mohammed was a cripple. He had a cane, and he dragged his leg like this, and he would walk with his leg through the city, and he was known for going and asking people for money. He would always stand right on the main street there.

(05:20):
And he would drag his leg, go up to the cars, ask people for money, go door to door. And so he was known all throughout the city. And that night, as we preached and said, Jesus wants to heal you, Jesus touched mohammad’s leg. And he began to move it. And he took his cane and held it up in the air. And he took a small step. Then he took another step, and he started running back and forth. And he started saying, Jesus, he healed me. Jesus healed me. And he came running up on the platform holding his cane up in the air and said, Jesus healed me. And we said, what’s your name? He said, my name is Muhammad. And everyone in the crowd knew that he was a Muslim. And so word began to spread that Jesus was healing Muslims. And so the next night, the crowd size doubled, and then the next night it doubled again.

(06:04):
Then the next night it doubled again. And by the last night of that festival, we had over 50,000 people, many of the Muslim coming to hear about Jesus for the first time. Why? Because Jesus had touched Mohammad. Yeah, the cripple. And so I’ll, I’ll tell a story about how Jesus healed someone in another country or in a, you know, from last night, and then say, Jesus wants to do the same thing for you. Yeah. And so rather than just saying I’ve seen thousands of people saved and healed, I’ll tell the story of one individual. Jesus changed that individual’s life and that individual because his life was changed. It gives people hope to believe for their life to be changed. And so it’s far more powerful to share specific stories, specific details, that it is to say these, these big general statements. People, when they discover the truth in the story, they don’t argue with it because it’s their discovery.

(07:05):
And so there, there’s a story about Reinhard Bonky. One time he was on television and they asked him, brother Bonky, do you think women should be allowed to preach? And he could have gone into a long theological discussion about that, but I think he just said, correct me my story. But he just said, if I was drowning, I would not care if it was a man or a woman who threw me a life preserver. That’s right. Now that’s a one line story. There’s details in it. You have a picture of a guy in the water drowning, going down for the third time in a man or a woman on a boat holding a life preserver, trying to, that’s a one line story. And with that story, nothing more needs to be said. That’s good. And people, you, how, how can you argue with that? I mean, you know, you could have given a long theological explanation like, well, you know, maybe women can God can use women.

(08:04):
I don’t know. But there’s the possibility. No, just a simple one line story. Boom. It created truth that people could understand. And so I, I noticed that later on here brother Kalinda included some stories and these are great stories that, that you found to, to include. And one of them is about a little boy who has a boat. So let me tell you how I would tell the story of the boy with a boat. Once upon a time, there was a little boy named John, and John had a pocket knife, and he loved a carve wood. And one day he decided, I’m gonna make a boat with my pocket knife. So he went, found a beautiful piece of wood, began to carve that wood with a pocket knife until he had carved a beautiful little boat. He found some paint, and he very carefully painted the boat, bright blue with red little windows, put a sail on the boat, and that was his prized possession.

(09:04):
He would take that little boat down to the river and every day he would play with the boat in the river. He would put the boat up at the top of the little stream and it would go down, avoiding the rocks. But one day when he was out there, it had rained the night before and the river was a little bit higher than it normally was. And so the boat, instead of coming back to shore, it kept going and the boat was lost. And he cried. He loved his little boat. He had made it with his own hands. And here the boat has lost. And he was so sad because he’d lost his boat. A couple of weeks later, he was in town and he walked by a store and he noticed in the window of the store was a boat. And he looked at it, it looked just like his boat.

(09:52):
It was a little bit dinged up and, and banged and some of the paint come off. But he looked at it and he recognized that was his boat. And so he ran into the store and, and found the store owner and said, Mr, Mr, you found my boat. And the guy says, well, I bought this boat from someone who brought it in. And the little boy says, can I have my boat back? He says, yes, I’ll be happy to give you your boat back if you pay me the money that I’m charging. And so the little boy, he was so sad cuz he had no money. And so he said, how am I going to get $5 in order to buy back my boat? I made that boat, now I have to buy it back. So he went and began to work. He found chores. He knocked on his neighbor’s door and says, can I sweep your yard? And he worked very hard until he had saved up his $5. Then he ran back to the store and he says, now can I buy back my boat? And the store owner says, here you go. Here’s your boat. And he looked at it and all the paint had come off. So he very carefully repainted it until it was in perfect condition once again.

(11:04):
In the same way that little John had this boat. It’s just like how God created. You See, John made this boat. Well, God made you. John loved his boat. God loves you. God loves you so much. He wants to have spent time with you. And just as this little boat went down the river and John went and spent time with his boat, that’s what God wants to do with you. But we became lost because of sin. Sin was like this mighty rushing river that took the boat away. And we became lost. And God was so sad because he doesn’t want us to be lost. He wants us to be found. But then Jesus found us again and he paid a high price. He shed his blood to us back. And when he bought us back, he found that we are broken in some ways. But just as John took out his little paintbrush and fixed the boat, now Jesus wants to fix you.

(12:04):
He wants to heal your body. Now look at that sermon. What did TL Osborne say are the four things you need to have in every message. God’s creation, Satan’s deception, Christ substitution, or redemption. You can preach all four of those points from the story of the little boat. All four of those boats are there in that story. All four of those points are there in that story about the boat. And, and so by sharing that story, you kind of capture people’s attention. They wanna know what, what did John have? And then you can take the story and you can apply it to their lives and, and turn it into a gospel illustration.

Have you ever wondered how to raise money for your ministry? In this episode, we’ll be talking about practical tips and steps that you can take to raise support for your ministry so that you can effectively evangelize and share the gospel.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:24):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:48):
Amen. Alright, well, we’re going to talk about how to raise money for your ministry. How many of you want to learn how to raise money for your ministry? And so, just like yesterday, this is going to be very practical teaching. And, and so one time I asked a minister you know, how are, do you do everything? He says, well, God just does it. But then I noticed that behind the scenes, he, they, his ministry was doing lots of things in order to make their ministry successful. And so I wanted to learn how do you make a ministry successful? How do you raise money for ministry? And TL Osborne, who we’ve talked about this morning, he said that if you don’t have money, then you don’t have a ministry. And so, in order to have a ministry, we need to have money, because in order to get on an airplane, you have to be able to buy the plane ticket.

(01:47):
In order to rent a sound system, you gotta give them money in order to rent generators and do publicity and do television. And, and to feed the hungry, everything that you’re called to do, you need to have money in ministry. And so I wrote a book, it’s called How to Raise Money for Your Ministry. And this book, it’s a small book, but I’m selling it for only a thousand dollars because with this book, you can raise millions for the gospel <laugh>. I, I actually, I brought a few copies with me, but they were all sold out on Monday. Yeah. And so I know many of you didn’t get a chance to get it. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to send Ms. Eden the, the books, and she will put it up. So all of you can have a copy of this book and you can download it and, and because I want to give this book to you as, as my gift to you. Thank you.

(02:48):
All right. So we’re gonna just go through some of the concepts in this book. And in this book, I’ve identified 10 words that will help you to be an effective fundraiser. So the first word is the word boldness. Everyone say boldness. Boldness. Now, I think sometimes when it comes to raising money for your ministry, there is like this yuck feeling that people feel, they, they, they feel kind of like asking for money makes me feel yuck on the inside. Like, like I they, they kind of feel embarrassed to, to ask for money because we’re taught to be self-sufficient and we’re taught to, to be able to take care of ourselves. And so asking for money sometimes might feel a little bit difficult. But DL Moody, he said that blessed are the fundraisers for in heaven. They shall sit next to the martyrs.

(03:44):
Sometimes fundraising can be just as difficult as being martyred, but I want you to know that if God has given you a vision, God also has provision for your vision. And so there’s a, a great missionary evangelist. His name is David Shiley has a ministry in, in Dallas, Texas, a Rockwall, Texas area. And when I was younger, he, he mentored me a lot. And one thing he said to me really helped me out a lot. He says, sometimes people feel that they wear two different hats when they’re leading an organization. One hat is the ministry hat. So they put on their ministry hat, and they go out and preach the gospel. They, they get lots of results, and, and God moves. And they said they love wearing that hat. And then they also have to wear this fundraising hat. And so they put on the fundraising hat, and it, it feels difficult.

(04:40):
And, and they’re, they’re going and trying to raise money and it’s like, like pulling teeth and, and, and they don’t like the fundraising hat. And so he said what really helped him is that he realized that he actually was not wearing two hats. He said, what I was actually doing is I’m only wearing one hat because it is the fundraising that makes the ministry possible. And so, without having the fundraising aspect of what you’re doing, you’re not going to be able to have the, the ministry aspect. And, and so you’re not wearing two hats. You’re actually wearing one hat. And so when you’re asking for money, you’re not actually asking for money for yourself. This will help you get over the fear of feeling uncomfortable asking for money. You’re not asking for money for yourself. You’re asking for money for the people that you’re called to minister to.

(05:34):
Amen. And so, my goal is to lead millions of people to Jesus. And so when I go to a businessman and I ask him, say, could you please give me some money to help me? I’m not actually asking for myself. I’m asking on behalf of the massive crowds of people that have never heard about Jesus. And so I’m asking for eternity’s sake. I’m asking for what God wants to do in their lives. And, and so if you get uncomfortable with asking just remember who you’re asking for. You’re asking for the people that God has called you to minister to. And so sometimes there’s negative pushback. When you go out and fundraise, I wanna read you an email that I received. I, I sent out emails. Everyone I, I meet, I try to collect their emails. And so somehow this guy got on my email list and I sent him an email asking for money for one of the Crusades.

(06:32):
And this was his response to me. He says, hello, I received your email about your ministry. I’ve never heard of your ministry, and I’ve never asked to be contacted by your ministry. Don’t send me any more emails asking for money. Remember what Jesus did to the money changers in the temple? I’m sure you have an understanding. The faith God asked us to have in him to provide for our needs. You should try having faith in God for your finances instead of sending out unsolicited emails to people asking for money. Thank you for taking me off your email list. And please represent the kingdom of God with more discretion and respect for our heavenly Father. Wow. Isn’t that a lovely religious email to re, to receive? But the man’s angry words didn’t bother me. Why? Because in response to that same email, another person gave me a donation of $5,000.

(07:21):
And that kind of, that, that softened my heart. I was like, that’s okay. It was good that I sent out that email. So James four verse two says, you do not have, because you do not ask. Matthew seven, seven through eight says, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find, knock in the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks recedes, he who seeks finds and into him who knocks the door will be open. And so there’s a book that I recommend that you get. The name of the book is People Raising. It’s by William Dylan. And he explains that there are three approaches in Christianity to raising money. And the first approach was used by George Mu Mueller, who had orphanages in great Britain. And he never asked for money. He had a policy that he never shared the needs of the orphanages.

(08:15):
He never asked for money. And so one day they didn’t have any food to feed the orphans. And so he told all the orphans, gather around the table and let’s pray. And so they all gather around the table, they take hands together, they bound their heads. And as they began to pray and say, Lord, bless this food, which we are about to eat, amen. When they said, amen, someone knocked on the door and said, I just felt like God told me to bring this basket full of food to you. All right. So that’s a great miracle. So that’s the, the, the Mueller way of raising money. And then another way of raising money was Hudson Taylor. He didn’t directly solicit for money, but he did believe in sharing the need with people. So he was a, a missionary over to China, and he would write home and he would say, we have these needs.

(09:04):
And then he would see that the churches would help meet the needs. But then there was another evangelist. His name was DL Moody, and he was up in Chicago and DL Moody before he became an evangelist. He was a businessman. And so DL Moody was very bold in asking businessmen for money. And so he’d go and knock on their door and he would say, I am feeding the children of Chicago. Can you give me money? And they would give him money and, and say, how much do you need? And they’d write him out a check for $10,000. And back in those days, $10,000 was a lot of money. And, and so he was very aggressive in his fundraising in the Billy Graham Museum Wheaton College up in Illinois, there is a fundraising letter that was written by DL Moody. And he had 200 secretaries who worked to type out letters asking people for money.

(09:59):
And this, this fundraising letter, it was actually a thank you letter that he, he sent to a Sunday school of, of girls that were from the age of seven to 12. And he says, thank you so much for collecting your pennies to help me preach the gospel. You have collected 53 cents, and I want to send you this letter to say, thank you for helping me to preach the gospel. And so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any one of these three methods, but as for me, the, the the way that that I operate is closer to how DL Moody operated than the the Mueller method. If you have the faith to do it, go for it. But I think that if you share the need with people, people will respond. And so I’d encourage you to be bold in sharing your needs. The second word that I want to talk about is the word source.

(11:00):
And it’s important to understand that God is your source. And so you have to keep your eyes focused on God, because if you take your eyes off of God and focus on people, you’re going to be disappointed. The people that you think will give big, the people that you say, surely this person I’ve known for a long time, they, they’re wealthy, they can do something significant to help me. Usually it’s not those people that will give. And and you’ll be disappointed if you start to think that a person or a particular church or a group will be the ones that will meet your need. And so you have to keep your eyes focused on God. God is your source. And so I remember when I took my first mission trip, my, my parents were missionaries in Mexico, and then when I was about 13 or 14, I, I heard about a mission trip that was going down to Venezuela.

(12:04):
And the cost to go on this missions trip was about $700. And I went to my mom and dad, I said, you know, I would really like to go on this missions trip. And, and so they said, well, if you’re gonna go on this missions trip you need to raise money. And so I went and I, I wrote out letters to my aunts and my uncles and, and my friends, and like anyone I could think of that, that would gimme money. And, and so I sent it off and, and it was a miracle. God brought in the money that I needed for that first missions trip. And then the next year I wanted to go on another missions trip. And the second year, the, the cost was about $1,200. And so I had to stretch my faith. And, and then every year I started doing different missions trips to, to different places.

(12:49):
I, I got to go to St. Petersburg, Russia when pastor Billy Joe Doherty was doing great evangelistic crusades in the Olympic stadium there in, in St. Petersburg, Russia. That was when I was about 14. And so I went and, and, and I was raising my, and, and so God increased my faith. I started small, but God increased my faith. And then I started doing crusades. And so I went from needing a thousand or $2,000 to instead eating $10,000. And, and so that was a big step of faith. And then we started do bigger crusades, and then we needed $20,000 and $30,000. And, and so as you continue to see God be faithful, you’ll realize that he is the God of abundance. And you have to keep your eyes focused on God. Don’t get distracted looking here or looking there. God’s will is God’s bill.

(13:46):
Hudson Taylor said, God’s work then God’s way will never lack God’s supply. The third word is the word relationships. So relationships are, are very important. Everything in the kingdom of God rises and falls on relationships. And I remember when I was in Bible school at at Victory Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma TL Osborne had given his building to victory to use as their Bible store, as their Bible school. And he still had his offices there. And so I knew I wanted to be an evangelist, and so I really wanted to meet Tia Osborne. And so I went into his office and talked to his secretary. He says, I am young, but I am called by God to be an evangelist. Can I meet Dr. Osborne? And, and she says, oh, Dr. Osborne is very busy. He is traveling. I’m sorry, but it’s not possible for you to set up a meeting with him.

(14:50):
And so I went the next day and bugged her again. And then I went the next day. And like I was in Bible school for like, you know, six months, and like every day I would go bug her. We became very good friends. And I would, I would always, and she’d say, Nope, he still cannot meet with you. And so like, well, I want you to know. And so finally I had a friend, his name was Dominic Russo. He was on my floor at oral Roberts University. And he told me, oh, he says, my dad went to Rama when he was at Rama. He became friends with Kevin and Leslie McNulty, and they are helping to set up crusades for TL Osborne. He says, maybe my dad could introduce you to that. And, and so Dominic Russo’s father, who’s also named Dominic Russo, introduced me to Kevin McNulty and he said TL Osborne is doing a crusade down in Costa Rica.

(15:38):
And I said, can I come? And so they invited me to come. And, and so even though I lived in Tulsa and TL Osborne lived in Tulsa, I had to fly to Costa Rica to meet him. And he was, when I finally did get to meet him, he was so gracious and, and so kind and, and spent so much time with me explaining how he did crusades over the years. And I learned so much from it. And, and from that was able to build a relationship with Dr. Osborne. And, and then towards the end of his life I had another evangelist friend who wanted to meet Dr. Osborne. And he said, can you arrange the meeting? I said, yes, I think I could call him. He said, but instead of just introducing you to Dr. Osborne let’s invite 30 evangelists to come. And so we, we had 30 evangelists come, and Dr. Osborne came and sat in our living room and spent time with us. And, and all the evangelists had lots of questions to ask him. And so we asked the first question, and Dr. Osborne, he says, he says, oh, he says, I, I’m old. I don’t know anything about that. You are young. You, you, God has given you all the answers. You know, he says, but I do have one thought. And, and so then he talked for three and a half hours, <laugh>.

(16:48):
And but everything in the kingdom of God comes from relationships. And, and so it’s so important to build relationships and, and to have friends realize that every relationship is I important. It’s also important to paddle your canoe in many different rivers because one church or one group of churches, one denomination, is not going to be big enough to support the size of the vision that God has given you. And so if you just focus on one church, and they’re your only source of support, that’s great, until the time comes where they say, I’m sorry, we’ve had a meeting with our board and we cannot support you any longer. And so you, you’ve gotta paddle your canoe in many different waters. And so I joined different organizations and different groups, go to different conferences, build relationships in many different circles, because God is going to call you to do something that’s so big.

(17:53):
If you just focus in on one source and thing, everything is gonna come from one source. You’re limiting what God is going to be able to do in your ministry. And so don’t burn bridges and take time to work to develop important relationships. On Sunday, I came a day early and I preached to the church in, in Plant City, Florida, which is like about 45 minutes from here. And the, the, the pastor there, he’s been a friend for, for many years. And so when I told him I was coming to bootcamp, he says, oh, I want you to come to my church. And so we looked at the calendar this Sunday is going to be Easter. He says, I can’t have you preach on Easter that we’re doing a special outreach. He says, but why don’t you come the week before?

(18:39):
So I came the week before, well, I preached Plant City, and then I have a, a partner who has been very faithful supporting me for a hundred dollars a month. They’ve been very faithful for, for quite a few years. And I haven’t had much interaction with them, and I knew that they lived down in Sarasota. And so I just said, you know, that’s like an hour from Plant City. Let me just drive down there and, and, and I want to come and see your family and spend some time with you. So I went down, I didn’t say anything about fundraising or anything. I was just saying, you know, hi, how are you? How’s your family? How’s your son? How’s your, you know, what are you up to? And just spending time with him. And so when I left, he, he pulled out his checkbook and wrote out a check for $2,500 to send with me.

(19:27):
I said, thank you very much. I’ll come visit more often, <laugh>, you know but it’s that relationship that’s important to, to be able to, to maintain relationships with people that, that give to you. So everyone say relationship, relationship, the next word I want to talk about is the word vision. Vision is what drives fundraising. Not need, people do not want to give to your needs, but they will give to your vision. If you, if you write someone and say, oh, I’ve got a credit card Bill come and due, and I really need $50,000 right away, you know, in order to pay, like no one, no one’s going to give to that. But if you write them and say, I’m going to be going to Tanzania, we’re gonna be preaching to, to thousands of people, we’re going to be going from school to school, and we’re going to be leading the children to Jesus, and, and the cost of doing this is going to be $5,000, would you invest and help us to raise the money to do this?

(20:27):
That is something that people can get on board with. And so my vision has been winning souls. When I was 15 years old, I was reading the success book, if you wanna Be Successful, you write down your goals. And I wrote down the goal, I Daniel King wanna lead a million people to Jesus before I turned 30 years of age. And, and so that became the driving force of my life. And so everywhere I, I share that vision, my goal was to lead a million people to Jesus. And, and, and if you help me, I can lead another million people to Jesus. And, and so people give to me because they know the, the, the, the vision. And if people remember one thing about me, I want them to remember Daniel King. He’s an evangelist who’s going after a million souls. Like, and so people will introduce me, you know, maybe I, I met them years before, and, and, and, and they don’t remember anything, but they remember the vision.

(21:19):
The vision is to lead a million souls to heaven, him, and it’s vision that people can really get behind. The next word is the word communication. It’s important to communicate, to be diligent in your communication. Remember that it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease out of sight is usually out of mind. Most people are not thinking about you on a regular basis. I, I hate to break it to you, but most people are not thinking about you. And it’s not because you’re not important to them, but it’s because their lives are just so busy. And so you have to do something to remind them that you exist. And so always be talking about your vision. If you don’t talk about your vision, no one else will talk about it. You have the greatest thing in the world. You might have the greatest thing in the world going on, but if no one knows what you’re doing, how can you sustain it?

(22:22):
And so, some of the ways that I keep communicating with people is through newsletters, through e emails on social media. One of the great keys to raising money is taking lots of pictures. One time I had written a book on healing, and I, I took it to TL Osborne to show him, and he looked through it, and he, he gave it back to me, almost threw it back at me. And he says, where are the pictures? He says, when you take a picture of a miracle, the miracle happens twice, once in the life of the person who received the miracle. And again, when you show the miracle, which God has done, so if you look at Teal Osborne’s picture books, in every book, there are many pictures of all of the crusades, the people that were healed, the pastor’s conferences, the sound systems that he would give away.

(23:21):
And so you need to take lots of pictures. And so today I have a volunteer, Ladner, come up here, give him a great big hand. And yesterday he took a couple of pictures with his cell phone and sent it to me. And today he says, would you like me to use your big camera? So he’s using the big camera, and he’s taking pictures to help me fundraise to say, I am training evangelists today. And so let’s get a good picture. Come, come up here. And I want everybody to, to put your hands up in the air. Actually, let’s stand up. Can you stand up? Everybody stand up. Let’s just get a good picture here.

(24:00):
Awesome, wonderful. So every time you go preach, I always tell people, I wanna show your beautiful faces to my mother. Everybody stand up and, and I’ll even pull up my phone and say, you know, everybody just smile and take their picture. Get a selfie there with the crowd, because it’s important to show people what God is doing. Take lots of pictures. The next word I want to talk about is the word persistence. Everyone say persistence. Persistence. One of my friends wrote a fundraising letter and he sent it out to a hundred people. And he was really disappointed because only one or two people responded to the fundraising letter, and he got really discouraged, and he gave up. And I told him, I said, listen, you gave up too soon. If you would write back to those same people again, send them a report of what God has done, give them a call, send them a text, give them an email.

(24:57):
He said, if you are persistent, you will be able to raise money. But if you just do one thing one time and there’s no response, you haven’t been persistent enough, you need to keep going, keep going. Winston Churchill was once asked to give a speech at a boy’s school, and the headmaster gave him this long introduction. Winston Churchill, he’s the one who saved Great Britain during World War ii, and he gave all of his credentials in the books that he wrote, and he was the prime minister of England. And after this long in introduction, Churchill stood up and told the boys in eight word speech. He said, never, never, never, never, never, never give up.

(25:49):
And then he went and sat back down again. But what a tremendous thing to remember that if you don’t give up, eventually you’re going to win. Calvin Coolidge, who was the president of the United States, he said, nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan press on has solved and will always solve the problems of the human. And so don’t expect any easy solution or magic key for raising money. If I had a magic key for, for raising money, I can just give it to you all right now, and, and we could be finished. But you just, you have to be persistent. You gotta keep going and determine, this is what God has called me to do, and come hell or high water, I’m going to do it, and I’m not going to give up.

(26:56):
No matter what happens, I’m gonna keep on keeping on and I’m not going to stop. Amen. Amen. Amen. So there’s a, a really great business book. I like reading business books. I, I, I do a lot of theological reading, and then I also do a lot of reading from, from business books. And so one of the best business books is a book by Jim Collins that’s called Good to Great. And in it, he explains a principle that I like to call the, the Merry-Go-Round principle. And he, he calls it the Flywheel principle, but I call it the Merry-Go-Round principle, because more people know what that is. And so if you can imagine a merry-go-round on a children’s playground, okay? And so I’ve got two kids and they like being on merry-go-round. So I’ll, I’ll put them on the merry-go-round and I’ll start to push the merry-go-round.

(27:43):
And like, at first it’s very difficult to push, and so I have to strain and push, you know, it hasn’t been greased enough. And so you gotta, you gotta work really hard to push it. And so you, you work hard and you, you start pushing and, and then you push again, and then you, you push again, and then you push again. And after a little bit, you know, it’s starting to go around pretty good. And, and, and then you can keep it going, and it’s much easier to keep it going, and then it goes faster. And, and so when it’s going fast, you can just go like this and it really doesn’t take much effort. You can keep that thing going fast without much effort, but it’s in the early stages that you really have to work at it, and you have to work really hard at, at getting it going.

(28:28):
And so it’s the early stages of your ministry that are going to be the most difficult because to, to get the merry go round to start turning, it takes a lot of work, a lot of persistence. You gotta keep going. And then after you have your ministry going, you develop some relationships, you’ve developed some credibility. People have heard of you, they know your name. It’s much easier to keep the ministry going, you know, you can do it with relatively little effort, but you just keep doing. And so in the beginning stages, man, you gotta send out a newsletter, you gotta send out a email, you gotta give people calls, you gotta send out text messages, you gotta take pictures, you gotta share, and you gotta send out a thank you card. I mean, someone sent you $3, you gotta send them a, a thank you postcard.

(29:17):
Say, wow, thank you so much for sending me that $3. And, and you just gotta, and, and it’s hard work, it’s hard labor. But I want to encourage you, if you’ll keep going, the day will come where your ministry will be spinning rapidly, like that merry-go-round, and you’ll be going faster and faster and faster, and then it looks much easier. And so when you look at Christ for All Nations, you have to realize that everything that’s going on here, I mean, everything is spinning here, and everything is just going, everybody things are are, are going all the time. But it didn’t begin that way. You know, Reinhardt, bonky had many years of faithfulness in the ministry, building the ministry, putting the work in, putting the effort in, doing crusades, suffering huge setbacks. Like he, he built the biggest tent in the world, and the second time they put it up, the, the wind came and, and tore the top off the tent and, and destroyed it.

(30:21):
I mean, that could destroy a ministry, you know? But he kept pushing and kept pushing. And Peter Vandenberg, he kept pushing, kept pushing. And, and so what you see happening here is the result of 40 years of faithfulness to the vision of God to go after souls. So you can’t be disappointed if at first things aren’t spinning very rapidly. You gotta keep going. I don’t wanna say keep going, keep going, and don’t stop, don’t stop. All right? Another word that I like is the word education. Learn about fundraising. Read books about how to raise money. I’d encourage you to, one of the best things you can do to educate yourself about fundraising is pick five ministries that you admire and start to support those five ministries, even if you can only afford to do a little bit. Become a $25 a month supporter of five different ministries, and look at what they do to keep in touch with you and then imitate what they’re doing.

(31:33):
Are they sending you newsletters? Does someone call you, you know, what are, how are you, how are they keeping up the relationship with you? And so that could be the best seed that you could sow is looking at how different ministries are being successful at fundraising and do what they do. If they have a mailing list, you start a mailing list. If they do an email, you, you, you do emails. So one time, you know, I was praying, I was asking God, I said, God you know, I need more monthly supporters. Can you please gimme more monthly supporters? And God spoke to me. He says, Daniel, he says, who are you supporting monthly? And at that time, I hadn’t been supporting anybody every single month, you know, I’d given to different ministries, but I wasn’t. So I said, man, if I want monthly supporters, I better be supporting somebody monthly.

(32:30):
I better be sowing in the area that I want to receive. And, and so one of the first ministries that my wife and I started supporting was c a n. We wanted to become a monthly supporter with c a n. So we’ve continued that over the years. And so, you know, I get all of their beautiful pictures, and that Daniel Kalinda, he signs his letters personally, I think to me. And, you know, it’s, it’s really says Daniel Kalinda and Reinhardt Bonky together, you know, and they sent, well, I, I’ve learned so much by reading the newsletters that they sent out, and then the next month, you know, whatever they said, then I can just say, you know, look at, look at how God is moving and, and imitate. Sometimes imitation is the greatest form of flattering. All right? The next key is the word wisdom.

(33:24):
And so, use financial wisdom. Be faithful with the money that God puts into your hand. Keep track of every dollar in every donor. Put aside a percentage of your money for a rainy day when you’re doing a crusade. Don’t just spend the money on the, the first bid that you receive. You gotta negotiate everything. Raise your money in phases. Be truthful in your fundraising. If you say, tell people you’re gonna do something, you need to do it. Keep your word and, and show proof of what you’ve been doing, and know the purpose of money in ministry. Money is a means. It’s not an in money is simply a tool that we use. If I was going to build a platform, I would use a hammer. And I don’t get enamored with a hammer. I just, you use the hammer for when you need to build the platform, and then later you lay it down.

(34:16):
And, and so for me, money is a tool, a tool that I use to build the platform of for ministry that I can use it to, to reach people. And so people who start focusing only on money and only on fundraising very quickly, their ministries can become unbalanced. And, and there can be problems in their, their ministries, because they’re so focused on money. And so we use money, but you have to keep your focus, the ministry that God has called you to. And so you have to remember what the purpose of that money is. The next word is the word variety. So, you know, they say that variety is the spice of life. And so in fundraising, it’s good to just try a bunch of different things. And in our ministry, we have tried every single idea that we can, can come up with for, for raising money.

(35:14):
And I would say that some of those ideas have worked well, some of them have, have, have worked poorly. Like some of the I ideas you know, have worked slowly. But there’s no one idea that’s the, the secret to fundraising. You just gotta try a lot of different things. And so one of the things that is probably most important is sending out regular newsletters. And so what I’d recommend that you do is make a list of the top a hundred people that you think might support you. Maybe it’s family members, maybe it’s friends, maybe it’s people from the church that you came from. You know, make a list of the top a hundred people that you think would support you and give them a call, get their addresses, and start to send them a regular monthly newsletter. And I don’t think you should wait until you graduate from bootcamp.

(36:13):
I think you should start now. In fact, I think you should go and, and send them something this week and, and say, Hey, I’m in evangelism Bootcamp right now. In just three weeks, we’re going to Tanzania. And I want to ask you to be praying for me as I go to Tanzania because we’re going to be ministering to thousands of people while we’re there. And we also need money in order to make it happen. Would you be willing to send a, a gift to help me with the cost of going on this mission trip to Tanzania? And, and so start now with a, a newsletter. Send out the newsletter and maybe the first newsletter that you send out, not very many people respond, but when you go to Tanzania, what you do is you, you take pictures for one another and share your pictures with one another, and then take those pictures and hand and, and, and then when you get back, send out another newsletter and include the pictures and say, look, this is what God did.

(37:08):
This is the miracles that God did. And, and, and now that we’ve completed the Tanzania, now God is calling us to do a crusade in Thailand. And you say, and, and, and share the vision of that. And even if you think it’s gonna be like six months until you go to Thailand, you know, begin to share the vision and, and, and, and, and tell people what it is that you’re, you, you’re going to do. And I think that you should send out a newsletter at least every month. If you want people to give to you monthly, you should communicate with them monthly. I think one of the mistakes that a lot of missionaries make is they’ll, they’ll do like one or two letters a year, and then they’ll wonder why people aren’t sending the money. But it’s because they’re not communicating enough. And so if you want people to give to you a monthly, you send them something monthly.

(38:03):
And when you send a newsletter, put a return envelope in there, make it easy for people to send money back to. You even buy stamps and put a stamp on the corner of the envelope and, and pre-addressed it and say, if you want to help me with a trip to Tanzania, I’m including an envelope in this letter for you to quickly send that back to me because I’m leaving in just three weeks. I need to hear from you right away. And if you’ll do that, people will respond. All right? So another thing you can do is, is write thank you letters. After someone sends you something, even if it’s just a little bit, write them a letter and say, thank you. Thank you so much for your generous gift. Thank you for helping me go to Tanzania and, and thank you for helping us lead people to Jesus.

(38:47):
And, and tie your thank you back in results and into the vision and, and tell a story. So when I was in Sierra Leone in February we had lots of Muslims in our services. It’s 70% Muslim, but it’s not really militant Muslims. So, so the Muslims just came to the services. And even in our pastor’s conference, we had two Imams who came to the pastor’s conference. We didn’t find out about it until the third day. And, and so we never gave an altar call in the pastor’s conference because we just assumed all the pastors were saved. And then we found out that these two Muslim imams were there in the pastor’s conference and we’re like, oh, man, that’s why you should give a altar call every single time you go anywhere, no matter what. Give an altar call. Well, anyways, there was this Muslim cameraman who we had hired from a television station in Freetown, and he went with us, and, and he went to all the services, and he’s a Muslim.

(39:44):
He was from the Mandingo tribe. The Mandingo tribe is 99% Muslim to be Mandingo is to be Muslim. And so he was in all the services, he was taking pictures, and, and he, he took thousands of pictures. Probably none of them were any good, but he was taking pictures of, of everything that was going on. And we were doing like five to seven services every single day, going from village to village, preaching in the villages. And, and so he heard the gospel all week long, like seven times a day. He kept hearing the gospel. And on the last day, we did a baptism service for the villagers who had gotten saved. And, and the night before this Muslim caravan came to us and he says, I want to be baptized. And we said, wait, wait a second. Do, do you know what it means to be baptized?

(40:30):
And he says, yes, it means I want to become a Christian. Wow. And so we said, we would be honored to baptize you. And so we baptized him, and he has a family with eight people. And so the next day we sent a pastor to his house, and, and the pastor led his entire family. All eight of them came to Jesus. And, and so that was a great testimony. And then I was in one service, and there was this boy who was deaf in one year. He’d been deaf for three years. And I told everyone, I said, take your hand and place it on the part of your body where there’s pain. And so the boy’s mother, he, she put her hand on the boy’s ear and began to pray for him. And as we were praying, a black rock or a, like a, a substance came out of his ear and fell into her hand.

(41:17):
And she said it was really gross. So she shook it off her hand onto the ground, and then she tested her son’s hearing, and he was able to hear. And so he came up and testified, and everyone was super excited about what God had done there. And so that little boy is the story that I told in this month’s newsletter. And then the Muslim cameraman who was saved is the story I’m gonna tell in next month’s newsletter. And because I’m gonna show people the power of what happened when someone heard about Jesus and what they were giving towards. Amen. then send out emails. I try to do at least two emails a month. You could do more than that. By the way I’d love for all of you to, to sign up for my email list. And so if you’ll pull out your phone right now, <laugh> and, and text the word souls, s o u l s to the number 22 8 28, and then just put in your email.

(42:20):
And that way I can tell you about what God is doing in different parts of the world. So just pull out your phone and type in the word souls, s o u l s to the number 2 28 28. And if you’re a foreigner, and sometimes our phones aren’t working here in the United States, just come up afterwards and give me your, your email address and, and I will add you to the email list. And, and so if you’ll do that, I will send you three of my eBooks for free as a gift to you for everyone who signs up for my email list. And so I try to collect email addresses, and every time I send out email, there’s people who unsubscribe for my email. Please don’t unsubscribe for my email. It hurts my heart. Like I look at it, it’s like, look at these people who hate me.

(43:05):
And, but then there’s always people that are signing up for my email. And so, praise the Lord. So there, there’s actually more people that have unsubscribed now than that ha are subscribed right now. So more people don’t like me than like me, but that’s okay. I don’t have to have everyone like me. I just have to be connected with the right people that God has connected me too. All right? You can host a banquet if you, if you do a banquet or, or a prayer breakfast, something, anything that you can get in front of people to, to invite people. So sometimes people say, you know, I try to get into churches and churches won’t have me. Well, if you have a banquet, you can invite people to the banquet. You don’t have to have a church invite. You, you can invite people to the banquet.

(43:48):
And so if you don’t have a platform, create a platform, look for a way to get in front of people, you know, even just invite, if you know somebody just say, Hey could we have a dessert night at your house? Could you invite three or four of your friends? And I could come over, we could give them all a dessert. And, and then I can share within the vision of what God is calling me to do. And, and if maybe it’s your aunt or something, she, she has three or four friends and she can invite them over, and you can just tell them the vision. Another way to raise money is, is meet with businessmen. Businessmen have more money than churches. If you just go to churches to raise money, sometimes it’s hard because churches have big vision and no resources, but businessmen, they’ve got lots of resources.

(44:32):
So sometimes it’s better to spend your time meeting with businessmen and, and, and calling them and, and, and asking them, can, can I come and share with you the the vision of what God has called me to do? And some will reject you, but some will give you checks. Praise the Lord. So speak everywhere that you’re invited to speak. It doesn’t matter where I’m invited, if it’s a, a small group. A couple weeks ago, I went and spoke, spoke at someone’s fellowship group. They had four people in the group. And so I went and spoke. It was like three hours and, and it was lots of ministry took place. They were a very needy group. But I go anywhere that people, I think they gave me an offering of like $7. It was awesome. And, and so but I’ll go anywhere to preach anytime I can preach, because I know that when you minister, good things are going to happen.

(45:30):
And sometimes I’ve gone to big churches and they’ve only given me a small offering, but then I’ll go to a little church with 12 people and they’ll gimme thousands of dollars. It’s amazing. And, and so again, you can’t look to people. You just gotta keep sharing the vision. All right. And then the last word I’d like to talk to you is about the word sowing. Several years ago, I had the chance to visit Ora Roberts at his condo out in California. And on the way over to, to meet him, I felt, you know, oral Roberts, he, he was the one who has taught the bo body of Christ about seed faith. You know, take your need and wrap your faith around your seed and sow it and expect God to meet your need. And I said I should sow something into, to Oral Roberts.

(46:20):
And so my brother and I, at that time, we, we, we did children’s ministry, and so we had like a thousand dollars in our bank account. And so we, we’d done this, we raised this money doing clown shows at churches. And so I turned to my brother and I said, you should, you think we should, so an offering into oral? And he said, yes. And I said, let’s, so the thousand dollars, everything that we got. And so we, we sowed that money into, to Oral Roberts. And before that, we had been receiving offerings of like $5 and 23 cents, you know, $18. We’d go travel for two days to go ministry to church, and they’d, they’d give us some coupons for Burger King on the way out the door. And but when we sowed that seed into Oral Roberts, what it did is it broke the back of poverty in our life.

(47:16):
And we started receiving, doing the same type of ministry. We started receiving thousand dollars checks and $5,000 checks. We go to a clown show and someone would give us a 5,000 check. I mean, that’s a really good offering for a clown, you know, <laugh>. And, and so, but it’s because of sowing seed, amen, into the life of Oral Roberts that God began to, to give us a tremendous harvest. And so I’d encourage you to be givers. There is a eternal principle of sowing and reaping that when you sow, God will give you a tremendous harvest. Yes. One more thing I wanted to talk to you about is this paper. This is my donor funnel. And so there’s four stages that I have for developing donors. So the first stage is to find people. And so the main idea in this first stage is to capture people’s information.

(48:17):
And the goal is to go from a stranger to an acquaintance. And so the way that I start to build relationships with people in the very beginning of the relationship, I start to sow into them. And so I give them a copy of my book or I’ll give them something you know, and, and so I try to at least get people to sign up for the, the email list. And then after I find people, then I try to win them as a donor. And so that would be the first donation or purchase from our ministry. And so I try to move people from being an acquaintance to being a friend. And so I have a variety of ways that I cultivate that. I send out text messages, I’ll send letters to people. If someone signs up for my, my newsletter, I will send them three letters.

(49:10):
And these are the three best letters that I can write. The first letter is a letter about our vision. The second letter is a letter about a, a specific project that we’re doing. And then the third letter is offering them a product. And it costs me a dollar for every newsletter that I send out every month. And we have like 5,000 something names on our mailing list, but I don’t mail out 5,000 letters. I’ll mail these first three letters, and if someone doesn’t respond to those first three letters, then I stop mailing to them because if they don’t respond to the best, I can write, you know, I could maybe keep writing to them a long time, but the chances of them responding later get smaller and smaller. And so, on a monthly basis, we actually probably send out about 200 to 300 actual newsletters a month.

(50:05):
And, and what I do is I send to everyone who’s given to me in the ba past 12 months, and then every once in a while, the bigger list, I’ll send out a postcard to people and, and try to reactivate them and, and, and maybe offer them a new book that I’ve written or something and say, Hey, remember me, but my monthly cost is sending out my newsletter to, to 300 people is like $300. If I tried to mail out to everybody on my mail list, it’d be $5,000. And I get as much from the 300 as I would sending out the 5,000. So I send out the first three letters. If they don’t respond to that, then I, I keep them on the mail list, but, but I don’t mail to them on a monthly basis. So the goal then is to move from the first donation to, to keep them as a monthly donor.

(50:52):
And so if someone expresses interest, they buy something, then I’ll try to, to develop them into a monthly donor by sending them a video, by talking to them at a meeting by, by inviting them to a banquet, you know, sharing the vision. I’ll, I’ll call them, I’ll set up a meeting with them. If they’re in Tulsa, I’ll, I’ll, I’ll call and, and ask if we can meet for coffee. And at that meeting I’ll ask them, would you consider becoming a monthly partner with King Ministries? And so then with people who are monthly donors, then the last stage is lifting them. And so someone who has given to you consistently for $50 a month for several years, then it might be appropriate to go to them and ask them money for a special project and say, you know, would you consider giving a $10,000 gift towards this special project?

(51:39):
And someone who has started to support you and loved you? Then you can lift them up in their, their giving level, and then ultimately even looking for legacy gifts that people that could leave their estate to you or, or something. So here’s the process. Just this sheet of paper here is probably worth a thousand dollars consulting fee. And so just, just going through this. And so you’re building a funnel, you’re trying to pour as many people into the top of your funnel as you possibly can, and then they bring them down through the funnel. And I try to make a no-brainer offer that anybody can accept. And so what I tell people, I tell people over the years, it’s taken us an average of about $1 for every person that we’ve been able to reach for Jesus. And so when people give me a dollar, I’m able to reach at least one person for Jesus with a message of, of, of the gospel.

(52:37):
And so the Bible says that all of heaven rejoices when just one sinner gets saved. And so today, could you become at least a, a monthly partner for a dollar a month, for just a dollar a month? You can be responsible for starting a party in heaven every single month. And and so that’s, and, and so anyone can do a dollar a month, but I’m going for monthly partners. So the church I ministered at on Sunday is not a very big church. Maybe a hundred people in the congregation and 13 people signed up to become monthly partners, and none of them were dollars. Everyone was at least $10. There’s one guy who did $5. There were several $10, but several did 25 and several did 50. But my, my goal is if you can just do a dollar a month, if you could just become a partner for a dollar a month. And so if you want to partner with me and help me lead people to Jesus a dollar a month, you can help me lead people to Jesus. Would you be my partner today? And I developed a video that is right on the opening of my website. And could we, could we show that video really quick?

(53:46):
Hi, I’m Daniel King and I’m a missionary evangelist, and I’m excited about leading people to Jesus. I’m the founder of King Ministries International, and our focus is evangelism. Many churches and missionaries focus on feeding the sheep. Our goal is to find lost sheep and bring them back to the church so they can start the discipleship process. We are excited about bringing people to Jesus. When I was 10 years old, my parents became missionaries in the country of Mexico, and I became passionate about going and telling people about Jesus. When I was 15 years old. I set a goal to lead a million people to Jesus before I turned 30 years of age. And by the grace of God, we were able to accomplish that goal. Now, our goal is to lead a million people to Jesus every single year. That’s why we do large evangelistic festivals.

(54:48):
We do leadership training to help local pastors become better at leading people. We also do literature distribution to help follow up on new believers and disciple them, and we do humanitarian relief to help those who are hurting. And it’s all for one purpose to lead a million people to Jesus every single year. I met my wife Jessica, right on the border of Rwanda in Congo, in the middle of Africa. And now together we have visited 70 plus nations around the world, and we have led over 2 million people in a salvation prayer. Over our 20 years of ministry, it’s cost an average of about $1 for every person that we’ve been able to reach. For Jesus. That’s amazing. For only $1, we’re able to change someone’s eternal destiny. And so today I want to ask you to give your first dollar to help us lead someone to Jesus. You can give by going to our website, www.kingministries.com, and clicking on the donate button. Or call us toll free, +1 877-431-4276. Imagine when you get to heaven and someone that you help lead to Jesus comes over and gives you a hug. You know the Bible says that all of heaven rejoices when one sinner gets saved. And so $1 can start a party in. I want to ask you to give today, give a dollar to help us lead someone to Jesus. I’m Daniel King. I’m a missionary evangelist, and our goal is every soul.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:00):
The gospel should be at the center of all that we do as evangelists. Every evangelist’s number one priority should be knowing how to preach the gospel and preach it well. So in today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how to practically preach the gospel as an evangelist.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:26):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:50):
The first thing we’re gonna talk about is how to preach the gospel. So imagine you’re in Nigeria, you’re on your way to a crusade. What are you going to do? Well, first of all, be prayed up. I remember before I did some of my first crusades I, I actually went on a a period of, of fasting in prayer, just praying, say, God, I want to be your voice. And I still try to remind myself as I’m driving to the crusade, you know, I want to be in tune with what the spirit of God is doing. And I’m praying on my way. And, and I’m praying that God would fill my heart with the same compassion that Jesus felt when Jesus looked at the crowds, he had compassion on them. And I want to have that to be my motive for preaching. I want to have the heart of God for people.

(01:44):
And even sometimes when I’m driving to the crusade, my, my heart breaks because no matter how much advertising you do, no matter how much organizing you do, sometimes on the way to the crusade, I’ll see people that are walking in the opposite direction. I say, God, how can we reach those people? When you preach, you don’t need to use lots of fancy terms. I believe in education. I got a degree from Oral Roberts University, then I did my master’s degree at or o u, and now I’m about to finish my doctorate of ministry degree. So I believe in education. And so, you know, I read Greek and Hebrew and, and all that stuff. But in a crusade setting, you don’t need to use complicated theological terms. You don’t need to tell people what different Greek and Hebrew words mean.

(02:41):
You’re, you’re dealing with cross-cultural situation. You’re translating into a different language. And it’s tough enough to go from English into the language that they’re speaking there in Africa without throwing another language. Like, let me tell you what, the original Greek, they may have never heard anything about the Greek language. They have no idea. You just tell ’em. You can do the research, do the know what the word means in Greek, but just tell ’em this word abundant means that God wants to bless you a lot. You just keep it simple. You gotta be clear and concise. Keep your message simple enough that a seven year old can understand. I got started in ministering, ministering to kids. And so these parents would drop their kids off at the service and give them a coke and a candy bar before they’d drop ’em off. And so they’d be all hyper.

(03:34):
They’d be going all over the place like this. And, and, and, and so somehow you gotta capture the attention of that seven year old child and and minister to him, communicate in a simple enough way that that child can understand. And I found that a lot of the principles that I learned as a minister to ch children apply cross-culturally, that if you can keep the attention of a group of kids, then you can keep the attention of a group of people in a, from a different culture, a different setting. I like what Reinhardt Bonky says. He says, I know the X, Y, Z, but I preach the ABCs. And so that’s what we gotta do as evangelists. We preach the simple basic gospel. When you get up to preach, you don’t need to comment about a political situation. You don’t need to say anything about local politicians.

(04:29):
Sometimes you’ll have local politicians that will come. They might even greet the crowd. You don’t need to say anything about the local politics. You don’t need to get up and say anything about Donald Trump. If if you do, you know, half the audience might be mad at you, half the audience might like what you say. But you, you’re there to preach the gospel. You’re there to lift up Jesus. Not to say anything politically when you’re speaking, hold the microphone close to your, your mouth. I I see a lot of beginning ministers, they go out, I’m gonna share my testimony with you today. And, and no one can hear you have a sound system. Praise God. You have a sound system. Why don’t you use it? Keep that microphone close to your mouth. Yep. And make eye contact with the audience. I learned this from I was reading a book about a famous magician.

(05:18):
He says, I would always pick someone in the back of the crowd, and I would look them in the eye, and I would speak directly to that person. And if I knew if that person attention would be captivated, that I was captivating the entire audience. And so you don’t wanna look down at the stage like this, turn your back on the audience, you know, keep your head in your, your Bible. Come on, look someone in the eyes, connect with them and look, look them in the eyes and capture their attention. Yeah. These are just some basic speaking points. These are not things that they teach in a school. In school. They teach you lytics how to preach, and you got three points in a poem. But these are like real life application that, that you just gotta, and the best way to learn is just by getting lots and lots of experience.

(06:14):
Yeah. or Roberts, he used to say that you had to preach a sermon 50 times before it became a good sermon. Yeah. And, and so the more you preach, the more you practice. And this is difficult for evangelists sometimes, because, you know, if an evangelist is doing like one or two crusades a year, he gets like four nights a year to preach, or six nights a, you know, it takes a long time to preach a sermon six nights. So, so what your guys are gonna be doing in Nigeria, this is going to accelerate your ministry because you guys are gonna be going and doing like three services a day. Yeah. And, and, and for, you know, extended period of time, you’re, you’re going, going to accelerate your learning by being able to, to do. And so this is just such a wonderful opportunity.

(07:02):
When you preach, use your, your Bible as a prop, not a crutch. Sometimes people, they look at their notes and they’re using their notes in a, a way that it, it becomes a crutch. Like, oh, what was I supposed to say next? Let me see. Where’s that verse? I know there was a verse about something. I was gonna share it with you. I can’t remember what it was. Let me just, no. By the time you get there, you’re preaching the gospel. You don’t have time to be figuring out what verse you’re gonna share or anything. Really, you should have your sermon memorized. Yeah. Oh, when I did my first crusade, I was going down to Honduras. And I, I remember my family used to live on a, a cotton farm. And I got all my notes, all my sermon, and I went and found a, a flatbed truck that was parked next to the, the field on this cotton farm.

(07:53):
I got up on the flatbed truck and I preached to those cotton plants. I preached every sermon I was gonna preach. And I said, you know, and, and then I gave an altar call for the cotton plants. And I got all those cotton plants saved. And I was out there preaching and practicing. And it, it really came in, in good because at my first crusade I was, I was praying for someone and they had pink eye, and it’s a real contagious. And some of it got on my finger, and then I rubbed my eye. And so the second night of the crusade, I had pink eye and my eye swelled all up. I couldn’t see, I had to wear a dark pair of glasses. And so I was preaching with my eyes closed. I couldn’t use my notes, but it was okay. Cause I’d memorized it preaching to the cotton plants.

(08:35):
And so I’m there preaching and just Jesus is gonna heal you. And meanwhile, and the funny thing is, is that there were blind people that were healed that night. And here I was, I couldn’t see myself. And then I was interviewing people, they came up on the stage. I said, you know, what did Jesus do in your life? And I put my microphone and a couple of poor people, I bumped into the face with my microphone. But it’s a good thing I memorized my sermon because I wasn’t able to see my notes that night. So, so memorize it, learn it, practice it until you can do it like this. When you preach, be loving and kind, you know, the gospel is good news. Everyone say good news. Good news. It’s not bad news. And there’s two types of evangelists, and, and I know both types.

(09:21):
There, there’s some evangelists, they go out in the street corner with their megaphone. You’re going to hell, you’re sinner. And, you know, and so what’s, what’s what, what I call finger wagon religion, they’re, they’re wagging their finger at people. You’re such a horrible person. You’re, and, and really, honestly, I don’t think that’s very effective. The Bible says it’s the goodness of God that draws all men to repentance. And you’re, so, you’re there, you’re preaching. Good news don’t be mean at people. Yeah. People are sinners. Yeah. People have made mistakes, but God loves them. God loves people so much. He sent his only son. God gave his very best for them so that they could be saved. And so don’t be mean to them. Be nice, be loving, be kind. That’s how Jesus was. Yeah. Your words can work miracles. When God created the world, he used his words.

(10:15):
He said, let there be light. And suddenly there was light. Your words are the only weapon that you have in your battle with Satan. How do you overcome Satan by speaking, using words? How can you convince someone to give their life to Jesus? It’s through your words. You can’t go and point a gun in someone’s face and say, you need to be saved. That that’s not gonna work. No. You use your words to convince people. And God’s words in your mouth is just as powerful as God’s words in his mouth. Yeah. And so when you speak God’s word, it can change people’s lives. And so use your words carefully. Don’t preach too long. I was with one evangelist, and he preached a good three hour sermon. And we started out with 20,000 people. And by the time he gave the altar call, there were about a thousand people there. People just got tired. They wandered away. They had to get home. The, the, the buses were going home at a certain time, and he was preaching a good sermon. Like he preached like four or five good sermons that night. But you don’t need to preach too long. You just, you know, keep it short. Keep it simple. Communicate. but don’t run off on these rabbit trails all over the place. Use your words carefully. Every word that you speak is valuable.

(11:50):
It costs a lot of money to do crusades. And so when I get up on the platform, you know, I’m spending 20,000 or $30,000, and if I have 30 minutes to speak, and I’ve invested $30,000 in that crusade, I think every minute of my time on the platform costs a thousand dollars. Yeah. And so I have no business running off and wasting two or three minutes on a rabbit trail. That’s not gonna help someone’s eternal destiny. I don’t know what all the C fan crusades cost, but I mean, you probably a, it costs a thousand dollars a minute, probably, or a thousand dollars a word. I don’t <laugh>, you know, and so you gotta, you, I mean, so, so don’t waste time. Don’t tell ’em about your kitty cat back at home. Yeah. Preach the gospel. That’s why you’re there. Tell people about Jesus. Point them to Jesus.

(12:47):
You don’t need to be attacking other people, denominations, other religions. There’s no need to offend people unnecessarily. The gospel is offensive all by itself. You don’t need to offend them. And so when I preach to people from different religions, I don’t spend any time attacking their religion. Yes. in, like in Nigeria, you’re going to Nigeria, approximately 50% of Nigeria is Muslim. And, and so up north there’s a higher percentage down south in Port Harcourt, you probably have a lower percentage, but I guarantee there’s, there’s gonna be Muslims in your services there in Port Harcourt. And so if, if you say something like you know, attacking their prophet or attacking the Muslim, what it does is it, it shuts a door. Yeah. And they’re not open to receiving from Jesus. Correct. And so there’s no need to say anything negative. Your job is to lift up Jesus.

(13:47):
Yes. Jesus said, if I be lifted up, I will draw. Yeah. All men onto me. And, and so you, like, there was this one evangelist, and he got on television down in Argentina. And it was a really big deal. He got a, a, a statue of the Virgin Mary. He says, you shouldn’t worship this. The Virgin Mary, he took a hammer and beat the statue up. And man, that evangelist was kicked outta the country. He’d never go back there again because of what he did. And, and you know that, that’s the mother of God. You just beat up there. And you know, it’s a great, he was trying to make a point, but, but really it was, it came across so offensively in a nation that was predominantly Catholic, that it completely removed the effectiveness of, of his ministry. And so, you don’t need to say anything negative, just say, you don’t have to say something bad about their prophet.

(14:39):
Just say, I serve Jesus. He’s the prophet of all prophets. Yeah. I, I serve Jesus. He, he’s the son of God. He heals people. He saves people from their sin. No one else can do that for you. He’s the only one who died on a cross. That’s good to pay the price for your sins. So practice what you preach. One of my great heroes is, is pastor Billy Joe Doherty victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s great church there. And he died a few years ago, but since I was six years old, he was my pastor. And he, he was also an evangelist. He did lots of crusades. And I remember seeing him preach one time thousands of people, people saved, people healed, just tremendous. And then as he came down off the platform, there was this little old lady.

(15:25):
She was crippled and, and she needed healing. And so he had his, his bodyguards and the, you know, the bodyguards are making a way through the audience and, and everything. And, and I just remember he, he saw this little lady waiting for prayer, and he stopped and told, you know, and, and walked over to her, just placed his hands on her head and, and spent two or three minutes just ministering to that one lady in the midst of the big crowd. Why? Because you, yes, you minister to the crowds, but you got it. It’s not about just being in front of a big crowd, sometimes being evangelist. People look at ministering to big crowd and think that’s, you know, real sexy. You’re up there on the platforms, really amazing. But it, every individual counts. So you gotta keep, if you’re gonna preach on compassion, make sure you fill your heart with compassion.

(16:15):
Preach with passion. The great evangelist Daniel Kalinda wrote on Facebook, I follow you on Facebook. He says, that evangelist asked me how to know what he should preach. My advice is preach what burns in you. If you don’t feel it, no one else will either. Yeah. Yeah. And so it’s gotta burn inside of you. You gotta preach with fire, preach with passion. Why are you there? Come on, do it. Do it with passion. Amen. I practice your sermon before you preach it. I would encourage you later in the day Daniel is going to do some demonstrate for you preaching some sermons, and give you some sermons to preach. I would say take those and practice them between now and the time that you go to Nigeria. Practice them. If you can find some place to preach them before you get there, that would be awesome. Go, go find a, a group of kids, or, or find a, you know, a, a halfway house. Somebody that you can practice and even just go in your mirror and, and practice the story, you know, and, and get it down good. So that, and, and that will make it much easier once you get to Nigeria because you’ll, you’ll, you won’t be wondering about what you’re gonna say. You’ll have that down firm. You’ll be able to deal with what’s going on in the context of, of where you are.

How to Pray for the Sick

Healing was an important part of Jesus’s ministry while he was on earth as a tool to show his power and authority. Similarly, it should also be a part of our ministry as well, to show the power and the love of Jesus to those who are sick. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about how to pray for the sick during crusades in evangelistic outreaches, and how to effectively show them God’s love.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:34):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:58):
Alright, how to pray for the sick. Usually when I do my messages, I will do the salvation part first, and then I will go into the healing part. So I just share the story of the boat. The first part of the story is how the boat was redeemed. It was bought back. So I would use that point to talk about how Jesus died on the cross to redeem us back from the devil, to pay the price for sin and to set us free. And so I would use that part of the story, but then I would use the part of the story where John goes and repairs the boat to talk about healing. And so I would give the salvation call. The greatest miracle is when Jesus forgives your sins. If you want Jesus to forgive your sins, lift up your hand to heaven. And then after we get through the, the alter call point, say, now we’re going to pray for the sick.

(01:55):
But I want to build the faith of people to believe for their bodies to be healed. And so usually I’ll share a simple story from the healing miracles of Jesus. You can pick any one of the healing miracles of Jesus, but like, I’ll share the story of the, the leper who came to Jesus one time. There was this leper, leprosy was a horrible disease. It caused your fingers to fall off your face, to become disfigured. And leprosy was highly contagious. And so this man had been kicked out of his village. No one wanted to spend time with the leper because they didn’t want to catch his disease. And so this lonely leper, one day he was out there all by himself. He heard a story about how Jesus was healing the sick. And he wondered, I wonder if Jesus can heal me. He heard about how Jesus was healing the blind about how Jesus healed.

(02:44):
The crippled man said, I wonder if Jesus can heal me. And so he went and found Jesus and he, he knelt down in front of Jesus and he called Jesus Lord. He says, Lord, are you willing to heal me? And Jesus reached out his hand and touched the leper. For many years, no one had wanted to touch him, even his own mother wouldn’t touch him. But Jesus reached out his hand and touched the leper. And he says, yes, I am willing be healed. And Jesus healed the leper. It says, instantly he was completely healed. And so Jesus is reaching down from heaven right now to touch you. Whatever you need from Jesus, Jesus is reaching down. He wants to touch you so that you can be healed. Jesus said to the leper, I’m willing to heal you. And Jesus says to you tonight, I am willing to heal you.

(03:33):
You might be wondering right now, can Jesus heal me? Does Jesus see me? Does he want me to be healed? And Jesus says, yes, I am willing. The same answer that Jesus gave to the leper, reverberates across the centuries and answers the question today, sometimes people ask, is God willing to heal me? I say, yes, God is willing to heal me. Reach out your hand right now to Jesus. He your arm might be short, but his arm is very long. He’s reaching down from heaven right now, and Jesus is ready to touch you right now. Let’s pray for you to be healed and then pray a prayer. And and then ask people to begin to do something they couldn’t do before. And Jesus heals people. The more often you pray for people to be healed, the more people you’ll see healed. You’re not the healer.

(04:22):
Jesus is. I like what Daniel Kalinda says. He says miracles are the easiest part of my job because I don’t perform them. Yeah. Be open to flowing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. One preacher who was really great at this was Richard Roberts, the son of Oral Roberts. I went with him to bat in Nigeria. And he, he used words of, of knowledge really powerfully. He would often say there’s 14 people here with bad backs, and 14 people would come up and, and they would be healed. And so I remember one word he gave, there’s a little boy and you have pain in your stomach. You’re seven years old, you have pain in your stomach right now. Jesus is healing me. And in that crusade, I was playing the role of the person who would interview people before they would come up on the platform.

(05:05):
And so a few minutes later, here comes this mother, and she’s bringing her little seven year old boy. And she says, when he gave that word of knowledge, he began, the little boy began to cough, and he coughed up a tape worm that was like this long. And she says he, he’s feeling better now. And I brought the tape worm so you can see, and she had it in a little plastic baggie. She was gonna show all the people the tapeworm, that the little boy and heal from a word of knowledge. But you don’t need a word of knowledge. All you need to know is that Jesus heals. It’s not your super word of knowledge. If, if you flow in that, great, we should desire all the spiritual gifts flowing, word of wisdom, word knowledge, discerning of spirits, all that stuff. But when Jesus he’s the healer.

(05:54):
And so you don’t need any special spiritual gift. I don’t think I particularly have a gift of healing on my life. I just preach God’s word. It’s God’s word that brings healing to people. And so you wanna bring people to a point where they are using their faith. And so I encourage people to take a step at faith. I say examine your body after we get done praying. Pray a big prayer. Lord, I pray for every sick person to be healed. I I come against the spirit of cancer. Cancer be gone now. In the name of Jesus. Blind eyes be opened in the name of Jesus. If you’re crippled, I command strength to enter into your legs and to strengthen your legs right now. Jesus is here. He’s touching people here right now. If you’ll reach out to Jesus, he will heal you.

(06:40):
He will touch you right now. Don’t look to me as a man. I can’t heal you. Look to Jesus right now. Jesus will heal you if you’ll focus on Jesus. Look to Jesus and say, Jesus, heal me. Come on everyone. Just lift up your hand to heaven and say, Jesus, heal me. Jesus heal me. And right now, I want you to take a step of faith and begin to do something that you couldn’t do before. If you had pain in your back, just begin to move your back. Don’t look for the pain. Look for the miracle. God is healing people’s backs right now. If you have pain in your leg, just begin to lift your leg. If you have a crutch, lift your crutch up in the air and take a step. And we’ll see people. You can see people. They will lift their crutch and they’ll, they’ll, they’ll be wobbling there.

(07:26):
They can barely stand up and they’ll, you know, they’ll be, you know, and, and then you’ll begin to see them straighten up as they take a step of faith. And, and, and you know, some of those same people, you, you see them walking like that. And then 10 minutes later they come up on the platform, they got their shoulders back and they’re holding their crutch up in the air. Jesus healed me. Jesus healed me. I mean, it’s a, it’s amazing what God does. And I mean, it is just, Jesus is a healer. He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever. And so then I’ll, I’ll invite people to come up to the front. If Jesus has healed you today, I want you to examine your body. See what Jesus has done. If you had a growth in your body, put your hand on the growth.

(08:09):
See if the growth has disappeared. If you brought a friend who was blind, test their eyes to see if they can see if Jesus has healed you Today, I want to hear about what Jesus has done. I want you to, to come forward and, and tell me what Jesus has done. Often I’ll say, you know, if, if, if Jesus has healed, if you feel better tonight, if you came with pain and now the pain is gone, just lift your hand up to heaven. And I’ll say, all those with your hands lifted, just come forward right now and tell me what Jesus has done. And then people will get shy. They’ll put their arms down. I’m not sure I really received a miracle. They probably did, but you know, they’re shy. But you know, I’ll say, ma’am, over there, you, you, did you receive a touch from Jesus?

(08:47):
Do you feel better? Come up here, come and tell me what Jesus did. Come, come. You know, so in a big, a big festival, you don’t have an opportunity really to individual lay hands on everyone. You know, if you have a hundred or 200 people, you can lay hands on people, you’ll be exhausted by the time you get finished. But if you have, you know, a thousand people, you can’t do that. So you have to use your words to build faith in people, to look to Jesus for their healing miracle. And don’t be discouraged. This is what Teal Osborne told me. He said, don’t be discouraged if people don’t come up right away. He says it, it’ll take time. People are, they’re wondering what happened. They never felt that before. And so I just keep talking people through just if you had a bad back, just move your back.

(09:34):
How do you feel? How do you feel? And and it’s amazing. Sometimes miracles are progressive where it’ll start and, and then, you know, it’ll take a few minutes for them to, to start to receive the miracle. And so don’t get discouraged. This is the toughest part sometimes is you preach a message and, and, and nobody gets healed. That’s tough. But that’s not actually what’s happening. People are being healed because God’s word where God confirms his word with signs following, sometimes it just takes time for people to get to the point where they have boldness to come up. One time I was preaching in India and we prayed for people to be healed in the first night. Not a single person came up. The second night, not a single person came up. I just kept preaching, healing. And the third night, one little old lady came up and she came up and says I was blind in my right eye.

(10:33):
I was healed the first night, but I didn’t know if it was a real healing or not. I can see now, I just wanted to make sure. And so I was healed the first night. And she says, now it’s been two days, I can tell you that I’ve been healed. Whoa. And because she had the boldness to come up, it broke something. Yeah. And then that night we had dozens of people that were all healed the first and second night. They just wouldn’t come up. And even some of their pastors told them, don’t come up until, you know, it’s a real miracle. <Laugh>. And, and you know, so, but then people would come up and, and, and by the time we finished that, we had dozens, maybe hundreds of people that were healed in that particular crusade. So don’t be worried if it doesn’t happen right away. Just keep, and and same thing with somebody. If people don’t understand mething, I’ll go back and preach the sermon again. If, if I pray for people to be healed and it doesn’t seem like anyone has been healed, I’ll just go back and tell another healing story. Sometimes I’ll tell two or three healing stories and, and, and, and tell people will get healed. Cuz what you’re doing, you’re building faith in people. You’re using God’s word to, to build faith.

(11:44):
Okay? So when you’re asking people to share their testimonies, this is one of the most difficult things to get right, because you have a lot of different dynamics. You have a translator, you have the person, you have the, the microphone. And, and so this is something I actually rehearse with my translator. I say, okay, translator, I’m gonna stand right here. I want you to stand right here. And then I want the person who’s healed to stand right here. And I know that there’s a camera right there. We’re trying to get the camera shot too. There’s a lot of different things to think about here. And so I’ll say, what did Jesus do in your life? And I’ll stick my microphone out and he’ll translate what I say. And then the person will share with the audience what has happened.

(12:34):
But I wanna keep control of my microphone because sometimes people will grab the microphone and they might start talking about, when I was a baby my grandma told me that, da da da. And I have no idea what they’re saying. So I’ll, I’ll hold onto the microphone. And if it seems like they’re kind of getting off track, I’ll grab it back and ask them another question to, to keep, get the, get the testimony out. And I tell my translator, now, now different evangelists do this differently. If you ever seen Benny hen, Benny hen has someone on the side who comes up and say, pastor Benny, this man was dead for eight years. He was brought in a bag of bones. And tonight while you were preaching, Jesus touched the man flesh, came on his boat. And here he’s, he’s walking.

(13:20):
Hallelujah. Bring him here. Touch.

(13:24):
So that’s how Benny hen does it, right? He has the right person coming up from the top. But then you have other evangelists, you know, and, and so you’re, you’re doing the testimony and that’s great if you have someone who can, who can do that, bringing them up. But if it’s only you, you gotta work with your translator. And, and you don’t know if this is a real miracle or not. You gotta find out and say, praise the Lord. You got a miracle. And so you’re there, you’re interviewing the person. What did Jesus do for you? I tell my translator, I want you to repeat in the microphone everything that I say. And then when that

Speaker 4 (13:58):
Person is speaking, I want you to whisper in my ear. Don’t use your microphone, whisper in my ear what she’s saying so that I know. And then he’ll say, she, for 12 years, she had this pain. Now the pain has gone. She had pain in her stomach went to the doctors. And so now,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:18):
Hallelujah. This woman, for 12 years, she’s had pain in her body. Now Jesus has touched her and, and she’s been healed. Mama, tell me where did you have pain in your, in your body? And, and so like, begin to do something that you couldn’t do before. If you had pain in your back, just, just begin to move your back and I’ll get her to move her back. Or if it was someone who was blind, I want something that the whole audience can see. Some miracles are, are great miracles. You know, I got healed from a headache. It’s just hard for the audience to see that. So I’ll let them testify. But if it’s a miracle that they can demonstrate and say, you know, if they were blind, I’ll pull out a handkerchief and say, here, try to touch this handkerchief and, and get them to come over here.

(14:57):
Or if they, they were deaf, I’ll get them. I want you to stand there and I’m gonna clap my hands, and when I clap, you clap. And so I’ll clap my hands and then come back and they’ll clap. And so you look for a way that you can share the the testimony. A way that the crowd can see that, that this is a, a real testimony. And if they brought someone with him and say, who brought this? Who brought, brought this blind man here, come up here. And then you can interview that person. Tell me, was he really blind? How, how long has he been blind? What village did you come from? How, how long did it take you to get here? And I’ll, I’ll interview and, and ask those questions and I’m creating a story. Are

Have you ever wondered how to open a crusade sermon effectively? It’s important to capture the attention of your audience from the very start, but it’s surely easier said than done. In this episode, we’ll talk about how to effectively open a crusade sermon and how to set up the rest of your sermon for success.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:29):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Podcast Anouncer (00:53):
When you’re opening up a crusade sermon, the goal in the first 30 seconds to a minute is to take a big group of individuals. They’re hungry, they’re tired, some of them are excited, some of them are curious. They, some of them come wanting miracles. And so you got a lot. Some of them are teenagers that are doing drugs on the outskirts of the crowd. I mean, you’ve got all kinds of people. Your goal when you open up the crusade sermon is to pull all the people together and to create an audience and, and to capture their attention. And so I think like your first 30 seconds up on stage are powerful. When I get up on stage first thing I say hi, my name is Daniel King. I’ve been to over 60 nations around the world, but my favorite country is Orlando. I love Orlando.

(01:48):
This, this has, Orlando has such beautiful people. God loves Orlando. So, you know, so I’ll create some humor there. They, they like hearing about themselves, how beautiful they are. So everyone raise your hand up in the air. Can you hear me In the back of the crowd over there? Can you hear me way back there? If you can hear me, wave your hand at me. If you have a good sound system, you know they can hear you, but I, I’m not actually asking if they can hear you. What I’m doing is I’m trying to get their attention and make sure those people over there on the back of the crowd. So, you know, over here, back here, Elijah, can you hear me over there? Wave your hand at me if you can hear me. Yeah. Hey, hey, everyone, lift your hand up. We’re gonna pray.

(02:22):
We’re gonna pray. We’re here on a soccer field. On this soccer field, there have been many soccer games. And in those soccer games, there have been winners and losers. Why? I tell you tonight that on this field, there is one winner. It’s Jesus Christ. And there is one loser. It’s the devil. We’re gonna start by praying to Jesus. Everyone raise your hand. Come on guys. Raise your hands. Raise your hands up in the air. Keep your hands up. Keep your hands up. Let me see you. Let’s pray. Dear God, in heaven, I cry out to Jesus. I pray that every person here who needs a miracle would receive a miracle. Tonight. We invite the power of the Holy Spirit to this. I pray that every person who needs salvation tonight would receive salvation in the name of Jesus. And everyone, wave your hands at me.

(03:10):
Come on, wave your hands at me. Now, this has two benefits. You’re getting people to respond, and it also gives your photographer an opportunity to get a good picture, <laugh>, okay? And so I tell my fa photographer, I say, I’m gonna get everyone with their hand up for 30 seconds. You, you get that camera out and click, click, click, click, click. Because we want to have good pictures to show our partners. Amen. And so there’s two of you on every team. One of you should be out there praying. The other one, click, click, click, click. Get some good pictures. All right? But what, what are you doing? You’re capturing the attention of the people, pulling them in, getting their attention and keeping their attention. So then when you begin to share the word of God, they will listen. I find that if you can get people to respond at the beginning, and then in the middle, I ask people to repeat my points.

(04:01):
Like I preach one message, the four greatest miracles in the Bible. Miracle number one, God created you. Everyone raise your hand at Pan Air and say, God created me. Come on everyone. Hold God. God created me. Miracle number two, God loves me. Everyone hold your hand up in the air. Say, God loves me. God loves me. Miracle number three, God saves me. Come on, everyone saves me. God saves me. Fourth miracle, God heals me. Everyone say, God heals me. And so I’ll get them to repeat that throughout the sermon. And I find if I can get them to, to respond to me at the beginning, respond to me in the middle. When it comes time for the altar call, they will respond to the altar call because you’ve been preparing their hearts to respond and receive Jesus. And that’s the goal.

How to Give an Effective Altar Call

The altar call is the most important part of any crusade or evangelistic outreach. It’s the moment where you allow everyone present to make a decision to either follow Jesus or walk away from him. In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how to give an effective altar call as an evangelist, and how to ensure the people you’re speaking to have the best opportunity to make the right decision.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:33):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:57):
All right, let’s talk about how to give an effective altar call. This is the main job of the evangelist, to bring people to the point of decision where they either choose to follow Jesus or they choose to turn away from Jesus. And not everyone is going to get saved, but my goal is that everyone would at least come to the point where they make that decision. As an evangelist, I’m called to bring people to Jesus. And so my goal is to present the gospel in a very clear fashion. People can turn away, but what would be a tragedy if they didn’t understand? And so when I’m preparing my messages, I actually start at the end. I start with the altar call and think, where am I gonna go with this? How, how am I gonna bring people to a point of decision? And then I’ll build my message backwards from the altar call back all the way through to the, the beginning words.

(02:13):
And giving altar calls isn’t something that really train you in school. It’s something you just, you, you gotta learn. So here’s some principles. Number one, I think always give an altar call. One time Reinhard Bonnke was speaking to a, a group of pastors in a hotel ballroom. And God impressed on him to give an altar call. And he thought that it would be very offensive to give an altar call because all these pastors, he, he said, they’re all saved. Why? They would be offended if I thought that they, they thought that, I think that they need to get saved. But in obedience, he gave the altar call, asked everyone, bow your head, close your eyes. And when they opened their eyes, eight of the waiters who were in the room, if I remember the story correctly that’s right, came forward and were standing at the front wanting to give their lives to Jesus.

(03:04):
And so you’re an evangelist. Don’t apologize for giving an altar call. That’s what you do. So give an altar call every single time when I’m on television, they will have lots of different questions that they ask. Why have you come to our country? You know what do you think about this political situation? Or that it doesn’t really matter what question they ask, I’m going to present the gospel. And at the end, I’m gonna, if I get an opportunity, I’m gonna look at the camera and say, you have an opportunity right now to give your life to Jesus if you’ll call out to Jesus. And so, even every single opportunity you speak, go for the altar call. Give people that opportunity to make a decision. Start with the end in mind. Number three. Tell your audience where you’re going. And so often when I preach, I will tell them that there’s an altar call coming before we get to the altar call.

(03:57):
I won’t spring it on them or surprise them with it. So, like, for example, I’ll share a testimony of how my wife got saved. She was in seventh grade in school, and she lied and got caught, and her teacher disciplined her. And she came home, and it was been such a horrible, rough day that she curled up in the back of the coat closet at home and was on the floor crying. And her mom heard her crying in the closet and came and knocked on the door, says, honey, what’s going on? And she says, like, I lied, and I got caught. And, and it’s just horrible. And I just feel so bad. And her mother was wise enough to know that she was her conscience was bothering her because she had sinned. And her mother on the floor of the closet knelt down with her daughter and my wife and, and said honey, you’re feeling bad because you have sin in your heart, but Jesus will set you free from sin.

(04:59):
Do you want Jesus to forgive you of your sins? And she wiped away her. Jesus says, yes, I need Jesus to forgive my sins. And her mom says, okay, repeat this prayer after me. Dear God, in heaven, dear God, in heaven, I cry out to Jesus. I cry out to Jesus. Please forgive me. Please forgive me. I believe Jesus died on the cross. I believe Jesus died on the cross. I believe Jesus rose from the dead. I believe Jesus rose from the dead. And right now, I cry out and ask Jesus to forgive my sins. I asked Jesus to forgive my sins, and my wife, she wiped away her tear. Jesus put joy in her heart, and that day she got saved. And she prayed a prayer with her mother. And in just a few minutes, I’m going to give you an opportunity to pray a prayer to receive forgiveness from your sins.

(05:48):
Get ready because it’s coming. I’m gonna give you the opportunity to pray. The same prayer that my wife prayed, she received Jesus. And today, you can receive Jesus too. And so see what I’m doing? I just repeated the salvation prayer twice before I ever got to the salvation prayer. So when I come to the Salvation prayer, they know what’s coming. Then when I say, would you like to pray with me to receive forgiveness from your sins? They say, yeah, I know what that is. And they’ll, they’ll raise their hand to, to receive forgiveness. And so I’ll ask people to begin to respond to me long before I actually give them the altar call. So I’ll get them to repeat things. I’ll get them to wave their hand at me. You know, I, I share with you my, my sermon about the four greatest miracles in the Bible.

(06:42):
God created you. God saves you, God loves you, and God heals you. And I’ll have them repeat that four or five times throughout the message. And by responding to that, I’m getting them ready to respond. Everyone just say, God loves me. What am I doing? I’m getting that word of the gospel deep in their heart. Six months from now, they may forget my face, but I don’t want them to forget the message that they heard. My goal is that people would remember the message, or at least remember the main points five, 10 years from now that they remember. Yeah. there’s another sermon I preach about the, the paralyzed man who is let down through the roof. In Matthew eight, Jesus says three things to the paralyzed man. The first thing Jesus says is be encouraged. The second thing Jesus says to him is, son, your sins are forgiven. And the third thing Jesus says is, get up, take up your bed and go home. And so today, Jesus says, the three same, three things to you. Jesus says to you, be encouraged. Come on. Look at the person next to you and say, be encouraged. You know, maybe you’re sad, maybe you’re lonely. Maybe you have fear in your heart. Maybe you have doubt in your heart. Well, Jesus has the message for you. He says, be encouraged. Come on, everyone say, be encouraged. Be encouraged. And then Jesus says to you, your sins are forgiven. Sins.

(08:02):
Yeah. And then Jesus says, go home. Completely healed. Come on, everyone say, go home. Completely. Heal. Heal. And so I’ll have them repeat that several times throughout the message. They’re repeating it, they’re learning to, to respond. And so that is preparing them for the alter. See, if I never asked them to respond, if I just got up and spoke and then asked them to do something at the very end, they, they have had no preparation for it. If the, the first thing I ask them to do is to come forward, to receive Jesus, or to raise their hand to receive Jesus sometimes they’ll just sit like a bump on the log and look back at me. They haven’t been prepared. But if, if they’re there with me, they’re responding, they’re already putting God’s word down in their heart. They’re repeating this when it comes time for the altar call.

(08:46):
The altar call is easy. It’s easy, it’s good. You gotta bring people to a decision point. Deuteronomy 30, verse 19. Moses says, I set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. It’s like a test. He says, you can choose this way, the broad path that leads to destruction. Or you can pick the narrow way that leads to life. You can choose to go to heaven, or you can choose to go to hell. You can choose to receive Jesus, or you can choose to reject Jesus. And then Moses gives us the answer to the test. He says, therefore, choose life. He says, the correct answer is choose life. And so tonight, I wanna give you a choice. Do you choose to follow Jesus? Or are you gonna say to me, no, I don’t wanna follow Jesus. I’m gonna walk away from Jesus tonight. Do you choose to go to heaven?

(09:45):
Or are you going to say, no, I’m gonna live in my sin and go straight to the pits of hell. I’m gonna let the devil take control of my life. Do you choose to repent and cry out to Jesus to forgive your sins? Or are you gonna say, Nope, I’m gonna stay in my sinful life and do what I want to do? I wanna make that very clear. I don’t want it to be a wishy-washy. Does I wanna bring people to a decision point? Do you want A or B, do you? And and so the, the clearer you are as a preacher, the easier it is for people to respond. Give clear explanations. Remember that what is familiar to you has never been heard by your audience. And so frequently, I ha ha have here evangelists, inexperienced evangelists, they say if you wanna get saved tonight, and we’re gonna pray a prayer of salvation.

(10:42):
If you’ve never prayed that prayer of salvation tonight, just raise your hand. I’m looking for someone who wants to pray that prayer of salvation. If you’ve never said that prayer, this is your opportunity. Well, someone who’s not saved, they’re sitting there, they’re thinking, I don’t know if I said that prayer. I prayed once. I prayed to my God. I went to the temple and prayed, but I don’t know if I prayed that prayer that they’re confused now. People who have been in church a long time, they’ve sat through like a hundred altar calls. They know exactly what’s coming. They know exactly what prayer is coming. They know what the prayer of salvation is. But someone who’s not a Christian, they have no idea. They don’t know if they prayed that prayer or, or cried out to you. And so my goal is, is to be very clear.

(11:30):
And I don’t use terminology in my prayer that I haven’t already explained. So I don’t say, do you want to be born again? Unless I have specifically used John chapter three as my text, explain what it means to be born again. If I, if I hadn’t had an opportunity to explain that, I say, do you want Jesus to make you a new creation? Do you want Jesus to make you brand new? That’s what being born again means. So, you know, use clear te term terminology. Be specific in what you are asking people to do. If you want Jesus to forgive your sin right now, lift up your hand. Amen. I knew there would be one evangelist that would get saved today. <Laugh>. Yeah. You need to be saved before you go to Nigeria. That, that’s just a prerequisite. <Laugh>. if you wanna join the family of God, please walk to the front right now.

(12:25):
Or if you wanna be born again, bow your head and repeat this prayer with me. I, I want the instructions to be very precise in what I want them to do. Aim for a hundred percent participation in the altar call. And so, as an evangelist, I don’t ask people to make a first time decision because some people in the crowd, maybe they’ve been in church their whole life, maybe they’ve even prayed, pray before, but they haven’t really chosen to follow Jesus. Yeah. They’ve been in church this whole time, and so they, they know the ins and outs, but I wanna make sure that they, right now, today, that they’re choosing to follow Jesus today. And so I’m not asking people to make a first time decision. I’m, I ask people to make a this time decision that right now, if you want Jesus to forgive you, raise your hand.

(13:18):
There may be someone who used to be serving God, and they’ve backs slid, they’ve walked away from God, but the the message has impacted their hearts. And they’re ready. Yeah. Right now, I want to cry out to Jesus. I want Jesus to forgive me. And, and so I will make my alter call broad enough that every single person can respond to it. And so I tell you, I aim for a hundred percent participation for my doctoral research. I, I did a survey of my crusade. I did last month in the, in the nation of Brazil. And we asked the people in the audience, did you pray the prayer with me? And we found that 87% of the people actually said that they had prayed the prayer of salvation with us. And so I go for a hundred percent, that’s the ideal. I want everyone.

(14:05):
But we had 87% that said yes. I, and of those people, we had 641 people that it was their first time decision that filled out decision cards and decided to follow Jesus. We, we also had amazing statistics in this research on of the people. 48% of the crowd came with pain in their body needed healing. And of those 48% 74% said that after the healing prayer, they felt better. Wow. Wow. That’s pretty amazing statistics. I mean, that’s what the gospel can do. Yeah. I mean, we have hard data now to back up, to say, when, when we pray, people get saved, people get healed. Amen. Amen. Give the altar call with urgency. DL Moody, who was a great evangelist in Chicago in the late 18 hundreds. And one time he was preaching to a, a big crowd. And he’s talking about, will you choose to follow Jesus?

(15:03):
And he says, we’re going to think about this this next week, and when you come back next Sunday, I want you to give me the answer of whether you will choose to follow Jesus. And that night on October 8th, 1871, a cow kicked over lantern in a barn, and it caused the great Chicago fire. Thousands of homes were burned. Thousands of people died, including some of those people in D.L. Moody’s service. And DL Moody made a commitment. He says, I will never again let an audience go away without giving them the opportunity to receive Jesus. It’s urgent. You don’t know if someone’s gonna be hit by a truck on their way home tonight. This might be their last opportunity. I’ve had that happen before People have died, have been in service, and, and instantly they’re, they enter into eternity. And how tragic would it be if I didn’t give them the opportunity Yes.

(15:58):
To receive Jesus. So you gotta give it with urgency. That, that it, it, it matters. I give people time to respond. Take time with the altar call. You don’t need to rush through it. That’s the reason you’re there. Take time with the alt alter call. You know, if, if people don’t seem to respond at first, I’ll back up in my sermon and, and I’ll preach it again, and then I’ll give the altar call again. And, and I wanna make sure that people understand. I was down in Honduras and we were invited to speak at a army barracks. And I gave the altar call and I said “If you wanna receive Jesus, lift up your hand.” And the, the commander of this army barracks, he lifted up his hand. And when he lifted up his hand, everyone lifted up their hand.

(16:52):
And I didn’t know if they were lifting up their hand because he had lift, you know, the command when the, you guys knew what the commander does. And, and so I went back to the beginning of the sermon, presented the entire gospel all over again, bring people to that point of decision and said, now, today, I don’t want you to do this because the person on your left or right does it, or anyone else does it. If you choose to follow Jesus, I want you to stand to your feet. And every single one of them stood up at attention and got to lead them in a prayer of salvation. Don’t be discouraged if people don’t respond. Your job is not to bring all people to Christ. Our job is to bring Christ to all people. It’s the Holy Spirit that draws people to salvation. It’s not your profound sermon, your polish speaking or your heart pulling story.

(17:37):
It’s the Holy Spirit. And so you do your job. Sometimes you are in front of a crowd that is like the stony ground. You’re throwing seed out on the stony ground. Sometimes you’re throwing seed out on good ground. Sometimes it’s rocky ground. Different countries are different. Different situations are different. Different neighborhoods are different. But you just go preach the gospel, be obedient to do what God called you to do, and let God draw the hearts of the people. And so you can’t save anyone cuz you didn’t die on a cross for anyone. It’s not your job to save anyone. It’s just your job to tell them the good news that Jesus paid it all. There’s never a bad time to give an altar call give altar call. So here’s some things to avoid when giving an altar call. Don’t try to manipulate people or try to trick them.

(18:27):
Sometimes pastors or, or people can, can seem manipulative. Like, I’m gonna count to 10, and if you aren’t down here by the, by the time I get to, to one, then you’re going to hell. You know, don’t, don’t be manipulative in what you do. Just present the gospel. Give a clear choice. And there’s, there’s some different things that you can do that can help people to respond. But you’re not trying to trick someone. You’re trying to, to really get them to the point where they’re choosing to follow Jesus or, or reject Jesus. Don’t be vague. John 6 44 says, no one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws him. And so trust God to save people. Again, it’s the Holy Spirit that draws people to kneel at the foot of the cross and don’t turn the altar call into a formula.

(19:20):
It’s, it’s not, there’s no magic words or magic incantation that gets someone saved. It is, I I think salvation is very simple. Acts 2 21, everyone who calls on the name of Jesus shall be saved. And so I think that if you’re driving down a road with a cliff on one side, and your car goes off the cliff from the time you go off the cliff, and the time your car hits around, if you just cry, Jesus, you can be saved. You know, when the, the thief was dying on the cross next to Jesus, Jesus says, today, you’ll be with me in paradise. There is no time to baptize the thief, no time to disciple him or train him in the things of God. But that day, he was saved because he cried out to Jesus for help. And so I think salvation is, is very simple. And so but it’s, it’s not a formula. It’s, it’s not you. You do this, you do this, you do this, then you’ll be saved. It’s a genuine repentance, acknowledging that you are a sinner and acknowledging that you need the help of Jesus in order to be right with God. And the Bible says that if you confess for your mouth, the Lord Jesus, believe in your heart that God raised in from the dead, you will be saved. So some phrases that can bring people to a point of decision, you can look through

Have you ever wondered how to deal with demon manifestation at a crusade or evangelism outreach? In today’s episode, Daniel talks about how he reacts when demons manifest during a crusade and gives tips on how to deal with that without giving the devil a platform.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:51):
Alright, last thing, how to cast out demons. So every time I preach, there are demons that manifest. Some countries are, there’s more demons it seems than other countries. I think some countries they have the same number of demons. The demons just stay undercover. Yeah. so sometimes demons will manifest and usually when they manifest is right in the best part of my sermon, <laugh>, right. As I’m about to give the altar call, this person will throw themselves to the ground right in front of the stage and begin to roll and, you know, slither around like a snake or make monkey noises or just jump. I mean, just, and what it is, the devil is trying to distract from what God is doing. Yeah. And so some preachers like to bring that demon possessed person up on the platform and cast out the demon in front of everyone.

(01:48):
But I don’t like doing that because my platform costs a lot of money. Yeah. Right. It costs a lot of money to, to build that platform, to get people to come to that platform. And if the devil wants a platform, make him pay for it himself. Sure. I’m not gonna bring him up on my platform. What I, what I’ll do is if there’s a distraction and it’s distracting everything, I’ll just do a brief prayer and take authority over the, in the name of Jesus, I take authority over this, this, this, every demon spirit be gone in the name of Jesus. Then I’ll have some of the pastors grab the prison, take them around back, cast out the demon on the back. And once the person is set free and in their right mind, then bring him up on the platform to give a testimony of how great Jesus is.

(02:33):
But I’m not gonna give the devil my platform that I paid thousands of dollars for in front of all these people. And so just know that you have authority over every demonic power. Yes. In the name of Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen. Let’s pray. Dear heavenly Father, I pray for these great evangelists that are here today. Your hand is on them, your calling is on them, and they are called by you to do great things for your kingdom. Lord, I pray that you would use every person in this room to lead millions of people into the kingdom of God. Great harvest of souls. Yes. In every ministry represented here today, in Jesus’ name I pray.

Cross Cultural Sensitivity for Evangelists

Have you ever wondered how culture impacts the way people receive the gospel? If you’ve ever evangelized in a foreign country, you’ve most likely encountered some kind of cultural barrier as you share the gospel cross-culturally. In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how evangelists can become culturally sensitive in order to share the gospel more effectively in these cross-cultural settings.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:58):
I was ministering in, in Pakistan, and I didn’t have a pulpit, so I, I, I read a verse from the Bible, and, and then I, after I finished reading the verse from the Bible, I just set the Bible down on the, the platform behind me. And it actually was extremely offensive to a lot of people, because to them, it’s a holy book. And if you take the Holy Book and you put it on the ground somewhere where you could step on it, ac even accidentally, you step on it, that would be a great insult. And so they came to me and they said, brother, we must get you a pulpit so you can put the Bible in the proper place. And so you have to be really sensitive. I, I remember another time I was ministering down in Costa Rica, and this was when I was a teenager.

(01:53):
We went down there on a, a, a missions trip. And I was doing a drama. And in the drama, I wanted all the kids to yell. So I got all the kids yelling, and he’s like, yeah, yell louder, yell louder. And then after I got everyone yelling, I gave them the, the okay sign. Like, okay, good job. And, and everyone fell into horrified silence. And, and I, I couldn’t figure out, like, you know, in America, if you’d go, okay, I mean, that’s a good thing. But down there they said, oh, don’t use that sign. It means you’re, you’re homosexual. And, and, and so I was like, oh, I, okay. I won’t use that sign anymore. You know? So you have to be careful sometimes ministering cross-culturally. And another time I was in the nation of, of, of Pakistan.

(02:41):
And right before I went up on the platform, I was at this, this big conference of pastors called the, the Alco Convention. It was started back in 1905 by John Hyde, praying Hyde. And it’s been going every single year, ever since 1905. And they invited me to speak to all, all these pastors. And right before I went on the platform the a committee, four or five of the, the, the pastors came to me. And very seriously, they said, brother when you’re preaching there’s something very important that we must ask you to do. I said, well, what, you know, what do you want me to do? They said, please do not say that Jesus is a dog.

(03:31):
And I said, you know, I was not planning on saying that I can agree with you. I will not say that Jesus was a doc. So I get up, I preach a good sermon, and afterwards I went down. I asked one of the pastors, I said, why were they so serious when they told me that? Why did they ask me that? I said, oh, brother. They said, last year we invited a special guest speaker from the United States. And he tried to tell a joke. Now, now, this is the joke that he told. It was, it is not even a very funny joke, but he was trying to open up, and it was about this, this this parrot and that lived in a house and a robber broke into the house, and the parrot started to speak to the robber and said, Jesus is watching you.

(04:27):
Jesus is watching you. Jesus is watching you. And the robber said, oh, what is that parrot know? And he just kept robbing the house. Well, out of the back corner comes this doberman pincher comes up and grabs him. And, and when the police come and, and arrest him and get him out of the jaws of the dog, they petted the dog and said, good boy. And, and they said, the dog’s name is Jesus. And, and when he would say, Jesus is watching you, the dog’s name was Jesus. Well, he just, he told that story. And in Pakistan, it, calling someone a dog is extremely offensive. And so it’s just a casual story. It’s not even very funny, but it’s a typical story that an American pastor might say, in order to break the ice. Well, they took that pastor off the platform after he said that, and they said, you’re not allowed to speak here anymore.

(05:25):
We’re gonna tell all the churches in Pakistan that you’re not allowed to speak. You have insulted Jesus. You have insulted his name, and, and they wouldn’t let him speak. So he, he went all the way to Pakistan, and because he didn’t know the seriousness of different cross-cultural communication. So, so we have to be sensitive when it comes to culture, and we have to work hard not to insult people when we’re ministering cross-culturally. And sometimes it’s, it’s just innocent mistakes. Like, I had one friend who came with me on, on a mission strip, and, and this is what he would do. He would go and he would shake the people’s hands. So he’d shake their hand, and then as soon as he got done, shaking them hand, he’d reach in his pocket and pull out a thing of, of hand sanitizer.

(06:11):
And he’d do this, and then he’d shake the next person’s hand, and then he would do another squirt. And he did this. And then he’d pray for someone, put his hand on someone and pray for them, and then out would come the thing. And you know, he was just trying to get rid of all the germs. But, you know, it came across as just a little bit offensive. The way that he was, was, was doing it. One time, my, my wife was, she was a, a crusade director helping an evangelist to set up crusades before we, we met and, and got married. And so one time she was trying to decorate the platform a little bit, and she had an idea, we’re gonna put the flag of the country on the front of the platform. And she accidentally, she didn’t know she did it, but she accidentally put the flag upside down on the, the front of the, the, the podium.

(07:04):
And she got in big trouble for it. All the pastors came to her and says you have disrespected our flag <laugh>. And then I remember one time I, I was down in the, the, the nation of, of Haiti, and, and we were doing a crusade, and, and we always ask our crusade directors for receipts because we are accountable to the government and to our partners for, for all the money that we spend. And so I would ask the crusade director for the receipts, and he ended up being very offended that I was always asking for receipts. You know, he, I, he’d go to the store and, and get some tape, and we came back and say, could you gimme a receipt? Well, it was just me trying to be accountable. But he felt like it was very offensive because he felt like I, I didn’t trust him with money.

(07:58):
And so every time I was asking him for a receipt, he felt like I was saying, I don’t trust you. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. And it was hurting the relationship. And so I had to sit down with him and ex explain to him something from our culture that at least in American culture, because of the rules that we have in the United States, we have to count for our money. And, and so I was trying to impose my culture, and in his culture, he felt like it was offensive. And so I had to explain, he’s like, no, brother, I trust you. I believe in you. You are a man of God. And I know that you would not cheat me. You would not lie. You would not try to steal money from me. I know that brother, because you are a man of God. But for my sake, with my government, I have to ask for receipts so that I can show that I also am a man of integrity to those.

(08:58):
And so, after I explained it to him and explained my culture and the reason why our culture requires different recording mechanisms for, for our money and stuff then there was no problem. Then he understood I wasn’t doing it because I didn’t trust him. I was doing it because I wanted to, to show that I was walking in integrity. And so, people from other cultures are completely different. We think that deep down, everyone is just like us, but that’s not really the case. Culture is all pervasive culture. It mayeth the man. And so every different culture has a different philosophical outlook, different moral standards, different social rules and behaviors, how you are supposed to interact with one another, and different cultures have different taboos. And so we are called to change people spiritually, but we’re not called to change people culturally. In fact, I think every culture has a piece of divinity in it.

(10:13):
Amen. Because in the beginning of time, God created man, God created all the different cultures, and you know, every different culture has a nugget of God’s character and God’s best in it. And, and different cultures have different standards, different things that they feel are are important. So like here in America, we have a different sense of time than people in other cultures do sometimes. Here in America, we usually will give people grace if they’re five minutes late. You know, we, we’d say, you should be five to 10 minutes early, but if someone’s five minutes late to meet you for coffee, we’re, we’re not offended. You know? That’s okay. There’s probably traffic, you know? And so in, in our culture, five minutes is not that big a deal. I grew up a lot in, in Mexico and in Central and South America, and I found that in those countries it’s fairly typical for people to be 30 minutes to an hour late.

(11:20):
And it’s just normal. You know, you say we’re starting the service at six o’clock, and they know that the, the music will start at six 30 and everyone will get there at seven. That’s just, that’s just how it works. In, in Hispanic countries, they just, and, and so they just have a, and it is not wrong, but I went to Germany one time and they said that the train left at 6 0 3 <laugh>, and if you are not on the train at 6 0 3, you’re gonna miss the train in Germany. It is to the second. I mean, it is, when it turns 6 0 3, that train is pulling out of the station. And so then, but then I went to an African country, and in this one particular country, it was like five hours after the service was supposed to start that people showed up. And I said, you know, we were supposed to start a long time ago.

(12:21):
Like, oh, brother, there was a lot of traffic. I was like, I know, but it’s like five hours, you know? But then we would have church, you know, for five hours for another five or six hours. Where here in America, nowadays churches are like an hour and 12 minutes, and then everyone gets dismissed, you know? And, and so different cultures have a different way of looking at things. And, and there’s nothing wrong or right about any particular culture. We, we find that we like our culture more than we like you know, sometimes, but, you know, we’re not trying to change people culturally. We are trying to bring Jesus to people. Hmm. Right? And, and so like the first missionaries that went to Hawaii, they, they were from New England where it was cold in the wintertime, and they would wear wool jackets and hats and stuff.

(13:23):
And they got to Hawaii and they continued to wear wool jackets and hats cuz that’s what everyone wore back where they were from. And all of the Hawaiians just looked at them and said, you guys are silly. You know, it is hot out here. We’re down at the beach. Why are you wearing a wool jacket? So sometimes we, we bring our cultural misconceptions with us when we go to the mission field. And so western culture is not Christianity. Jesus came from the Middle East, and sometimes our culture can actually be a hindrance. But what Jesus does is he cuts through all racial, political, and cultural differences. And so your job as a missionary is not to turn people into you. Your, your job is to make people look like Jesus. Amen. Right? Hmm. Yes. And we have to be sensitive to different cultures. When your, your, your min ministering to people, so, you know, the sermon illustrations that you typically use in the United States would be different than the sermon illustrations that you’re going to use in Africa.

(14:36):
Like here in the United States, I’ve heard pastors give illustrations about popular movies or popular shows that they’ve seen on Netflix. You know, well, in Africa, sometimes a lot of the people don’t even have a tv. They’ve never gone to the cinema to to watch a movie. You some countries, they’ve never eaten a pizza. Can you imagine that? You never, you never had a pizza in your whole life. And so if you’re giving an illustration about eating a pizza, that’s something that someone here would understand that illustration, but would be very different overseas. One time I was in India and I was ministering with a friend and he, he was, he was ministering and he gave an illustration. He, and th this was the illustration. He says, you know, one day I was, I was driving my car and I ran out of gas and I didn’t have any money for gas.

(15:34):
And he says, and I was praying to say, God, you know, what am I gonna do? And he says, then I looked in my wallet and in the back of my wallet, I forgot it was there, I had a, I tucked a a hundred dollars bill. And so I pulled out that, that a hundred dollars bill and I was able to buy gas. And so his point was that God provides for you even when you, you, you don’t know if you’re gonna need it. And so that’s a, that’s a great illustration. It was illustrating the point, but the problem was that not a single pastor at that pastor’s conference had a car. And, and so you’re talking about a car, and to them they’re saying, wow, look at your amazing wealth.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Right?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:15):
And then none of them had ever held a hundred dollars bill in their hands. In fact, the typical salary over there would be about a dollar a day. So, you know, you’re talking about a huge amount of money that he just accidentally misplaced in the back of his wallet, <laugh>. And so they didn’t understand the illustration the way that he intended for it to be understood. Hmm. And so, people in Africa, they’ve never heard of baseball or American football. You know, if you go to, in India or Pakistan, the thing that you wanna talk about is cricket

(17:05):
instead of American football, they, you know, they, they kick the ball When they play football, they don’t throw the ball. Here in America, we throw the ball when you play football, which is strange cuz the rest of the world calls it football. And so some cultures

(17:27):
like in, in Ukraine, if you say something twice, like here in America, preachers will say something twice you know, God is a good God. And everyone says, hallelujah. And they say, God is a good God. Hallelujah. God is a good God. Well, in Ukraine, if you say something twice, they look at you, Hey, do you think I’m stupid? I heard you the first time. Why are you saying it twice? Hmm. So we come to serve people. We come not as ambassadors of our culture. We come as ambassadors of Jesus. Good. And we go to people, we say, Jesus told me to come to preach the gospel to you. And I hope someday that God will open up the door for you to come to my country and to preach the gospel to us. We don’t go as the savior. He’s the Savior. We bring the Savior with us.

(18:34):
We’re not trying to come to, to rescue their culture or to, to fix people. We go to point people to Jesus. Another difference between the United States and sometimes Africa is that, that here in the United States, we have very individualistic thinking. And so an individual will make a decision for him himself. And so, e even when we get saved, it’s a personal decision. Would you make a personal decision today to choose to follow Jesus? Whereas in some countries in Africa, there’s much more of a, a corporate mentality where they make a decision to, it’s not just the one person getting saved, it would be the whole family or the whole village deciding to follow Jesus. And, and it would actually be very offensive sometimes if you go and you try to get a, a wife saved a and the husband is opposed to that, and it would be considered disrespectful that you would be talking to her instead of talking to the, the head of the household.

(19:49):
Because first you show respect and you explain the gospel message to the, to the head of the household. And then after he decides, yes, we’re our family is going to serve Jesus, then he turns to his wife and says, we’re, we’re the whole family, us the kids, aunts, uncles, the entire family is going to, to come to Jesus. Man, I was just recently in the, the nation of, of Mongolia. And we did a, we did a crusade in the ancient capital of Ganges Khan from, at one time Ganges Khan had conquered all of Asia from this place. And he had one fourth of the world’s population under his control. And now the population there has dwindled. And they only have about 14,000 people in that village, about 4,000 homes. And, and so we took a team, and it’s mostly Buddhists there. We had a hundred Christians with us that came from 12 different countries, less than a hundred Christians in the city.

(20:56):
And so we took our team, joined together with the, the local Christians, and, and went door to door throughout the entire community handing out bibles and giving people a, a gospel of mark. And so they live in these little huts that are covered with fur that are good at keeping in the heat during the winter months. And we’re going door to door knocking on the doors and that they would invite us to come into their, their little hut, and we would tell them why we were there. And, and many of them were, were very hospitable and, and would give us tea. And the traditional drink of Mongolia is fermented horse milk. And so they’d bring this big bowl of warm fermented horse melt. And the pastor gave me and said, this is the traditional drink of my country. And, and, and so I, I tasted it and it tasted like really sour yogurt, like, like unsweetened yogurt, really sour, unsweetened yogurt.

(22:04):
And so I, I tasted it. And you know, their, their idea of a good time on a cold winter night is to sit around the fireplace and everyone tells stories to one another and passes around the big bowl of fermented horse milk. And so I drank the traditional drink of his people, and then I said, brother, I want you to drink the traditional drink of my people. And I brought out a bottle of Coca-Cola and gave him a bottle of Coca-Cola. And, and so we went and, and we visited the household. And so, so in, in cases like that, where you have an opportunity to, to go into someone’s house and you’re, you’re offering to pray for them and to talk to them about Jesus and to, to give them a Bible, you know, if they give you something to drink, it’s appropriate to go ahead and, and take a drink.

(22:52):
If they give you something to eat, it’s appropriate to go ahead and eat. Sometimes you don’t know what it is, but praise God, you say, God bless this food, and I pray that all sickness will stay far away from my body in Jesus’ name. And, and you eat it because that’s what is, is culturally appropriate to do. And you wouldn’t do anything to, to offend them. And usually people are, are very forgiving. Even if you learn just a few words in their language, and even if you mispronounce them, they will love you for trying. One of the things I do sometimes when I’m preaching is I’ll try to learn a few words in their language. And, and so I’ll, I’ll say God is good. And the the translator will say, and I’ll say, good. And the translator will say, went on. So I’ll repeat it in the local language.

(23:47):
And usually I completely mess up and everyone, everyone laughs and I say, the devil is bad. And then they’ll say bad in the local language. And I’ll try to, and I’ll try to say good and bad and good and bad. And, and I’ll, I’ll completely mangle their language and everyone will laugh at me. But it’s a great way to connect with them because I’m, I’m showing that I’m at least trying to learn something of their local language. I’m at least trying to, to relate to them. And even if I mess it up, they can laugh at me. It’s okay, it’s fine, as long as they wanna laugh at me. Just make sure when you’re preaching, never do anything that would show that you’re laughing at them. Right, right. Because if you start laughing at them, well, it’ll just close every door Yeah. To open up for, for you to share the gospel.

(24:47):
But if they can laugh at you, I, you know, I make fun of myself. One time I was in Africa and I, I went with a, an African-American pastor who is really big and very tall, and he’s very regal in the way that he walks. And, and so the, the church is over in Africa, just loved him because he would, he would walk in and so they gave him an African name, and the African name that they gave him, he says, what does that mean? They said, it means the king has returned. And so he walked in with this name, the king has returned, and I had this big backpack that I carried on my back. And it had my camera and all my, my, my bible, my laptop, everything in it. And so I was always carrying this big backpack. And so they gave me an African name and I said, what does my African name mean? And they said, your name means small man with big backpack.

(25:55):
One time, my, my wife Jessica, she, she lived for a year in Kenya, and all the different members of her team had babies named after them. And so one of her team members is, is named Scott. And so one day they brought a little baby boy and they said, we are naming this boy Scott. And they couldn’t even pronounce Scott, but there’s Scott, Scott. And so my wife was, she’s like, well, when are they gonna name a baby after me? They named babies after like two or three of the team members. And so one day finally they came to her and they were so excited and, and saying, and, and said, we named it Jessica. Jessica. And she’s like, oh, finally a baby has been named after me. And, and, and the pastor grabbed her by the hand and says, come and see, come and see Jessica. And, and she didn’t really totally understand, but grabbed her by the hand and she went out and out in front of his house, there was his brand new cow that he’s been saving up for. And he said, we’ve named a cow, Jessica. And so all her team members got named after babies, and she got a cow named Jessica, named after her.

(27:11):
Alright. So when we’re ministering to people overseas, the best thing that we can do is to show honor and respect to them, to, to show that we value them as people. We are all created in the image of God. And God does not create trash. You are valuable. You are made in God’s image. And I’ve found that if you will show that you value and respect people and try to learn their customs, try to be polite to them that you will open up doors. Even if you make a little mistake, do a a wrong hand gesture or say something wrong that would be offensive in their culture. As long as you’re showing respect and honor to them, it will smooth over many problems. One time I took a friend of mine with me down to Brazil, and he’s a children’s minister. His name is Mark.

(28:16):
And Mark’s a great guy, and he loves children. And so he just, he ministers like his foot is plugged into an electric socket and he’s just, he, you know, he, he’s excited, but he’s the type of guy who, who has very few filters. And so like, he’s always like, and so I took him with me to Brazil, and during the crusade he’s like, can I take all the kids to the back? And you, you’re ministering the adults in front all this, I, I’ll minister to them. And so he, he took all the kids and he had this big parachute type thing that he spread out on the ground as a tarp. And he had all the kids sit down and he was doing games with them and, and teaching them, telling them Bible stories. And, and I was like halfway through my message, and some someone came running up to me and, and they, they, there’s, they’re, they’re like, you know, talking about witchcraft and there’s witchcraft going on, like, what’s going on?

(29:09):
And, and, and so I, I handed the microphone to someone else, and I went back there and I found out that he was doing a teaching on, on Jesus, the lie of the world. And he brought some of those little candles with him, and he like, put them in a circle on the thing, and he’d lit all the candles. And they thought he was like putting curses on the kids because the witches down there, they actually do that type of thing. And so I’m like, mark, don’t do that. You know, blow out all the candles. And I’m like, don’t witchcraft, okay, you’re not allowed to do witchcraft at the crusade. You know? And he was just doing it as an illustration for the kids, and it was fun. But he didn’t have a, a cultural sensitivity to the, the, the, the, he didn’t know it wasn’t his fault.

(29:59):
But and then I took Mark with me again to Mongolia. And again, we, we were doing a, a children’s, he was, we had a children’s tent set up. We had a big tent for the adults and then a little tent for the kids. And, and so there were local children’s ministers that were, that dressed up as clowns. And they, they had a habit of, of ministering to the kids there, and they had a way of doing it. And the Mongolian people are very proud. They are warriors. They are the descendants of Genus Khan. And even the Christians, I would not wanna mess with them. I mean, they have a warrior spirit in them, and they are a very proud people. It’s very rare that they would invite someone in from the outside to come and minister there because they feel a, like, if they have to bring in, you know, a gift from the outside, that it’s because they’re lacking something in, in their, in, in themselves.

(31:00):
And, and so they’re very proud. So we were very honored to be invited and to, to, to be there. And, and so during the children’s service, you know, I, I told Mark, okay, I want you to sit down with their children’s minister, and you put together a plan, you know, you do some of your ministry, let them do some of their ministry and, and you know, put together a plan for how the whole service would go and share it. And there ended up being a fight between my children’s minister and their children’s ministers because my guy wanted to do it his way, and they had their way of doing it. And somehow they got offended and, and my guy got offended and we had to go. And it actually got to point where escalator, where we had to bring it to the, the leadership level where the pastors, and we had to sit down and I said, oh, I’m so sorry.

(32:00):
We didn’t know. We did not understand your culture. I’m so sorry that this has happened. As a leader, I, I take full responsibility for anything offensive that was said. That was not our intention. We just, we want to work together with you. And so we were able to, to smooth it over. But there was still a little bit of offense. And so kind of the way we smoothed it over is like their, their children’s ministers got one night and then my guy got one night, but we weren’t able to get them to, to work together because of, of the offense that had come, just because of a, a misunderstanding of that, that Asian culture, you know face very important in the Asian culture, you, you would not want to insult someone or to cause shame to come upon them. You know, so, you know, in front of people, I, I would always lift people up, always speak, encouraging words, you know I, I encourage people. All right. So those are some, some thoughts about culture. Let’s go ahead and open it up for questions and if you have any questions about culture or anything that I’ve said go ahead. We have a microphone here. You can come and, and ask your question right here at this microphone and I’ll do my best to answer any questions that you would have about culture.

(33:21):
Yeah, yeah. That’s how they told me we’re supposed to do it.

Evangelism Student #1 (33:27):
That’s right. I think

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:29):
In the c fan culture, that’s how

Evangelism Student #1 (33:31):
They

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:31):
Recording have instructed me to do it.

Evangelism Student #1 (33:34):
Yes. Regarding I just want to know, how do you prepare when you have to go in in a new country? How do you prepare just regarding the, the cultural aspect? Do you ask questions to the local leaders? Do you, do you have people from your team going there just to, to try to understand, do you watch movies? What, what are you,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:57):
What what country are you from?

Evangelism Student #1 (33:59):
Ivory. I’m native from Ivory Coast, but I live in Canada. I’ve been living in Canada over the last 20 years, so,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:03):
Okay. So are you can Canadian or Ivory Coast? I’m both. What is your culture?

Evangelism Student #1 (34:07):
I’m, IM bicultural actually. Okay. I’m I live half of my life in, in every coast. Mm-Hmm. And the overall half in Canada, so,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:15):
Okay. My, my wife is actually from Canada. Okay. Her family is Chinese. Okay. So both her mother and father are Chinese. Okay. And, and they were, her father was born over in Hong Kong. Mm-Hmm. Her mothers from a Chinese family. Okay. But they immigrated to Canada. And, and so she is Canadian, Canadian mostly by culture, but with some aspects of Chinese culture, just little that they got saved. And so when they got saved mm-hmm. <Affirmative>, a lot of the, the negative things in Chinese culture, they, they took out of their family, but she, they still, I mean, she still cooks me Chinese food, which is delicious. <Laugh>, you know, the

Evangelism Student #1 (34:57):
Food is always important.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:00):
So what, what what have you found is different between like, the culture in Ivory Coast and the

Evangelism Student #1 (35:05):
Culture? Oh, I found a lot actually.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:07):
Like, like what are some examples?

Evangelism Student #1 (35:08):
I remember like the, the Indi individualism is something like being in Canada was the first thing that struck me. I was so, so impacted that the people in Canada was, was most interested into the, the things coming from a coast. It’s like we, we care for others. We, we, we are very welcoming to people we don’t know. So basically it’s like, this is something I have to learn. For example, in in, in co devo in our coast, people are welcoming first, they’re very welcoming. Actually, like about 20% of the population comes from out of the country. So we are very used to having people coming from outside. So, and the first thing I, I have noticed like primarily in Covo in our coast, people are very welcoming, but it is very difficult to go deeper into things. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. So you have to build trust. You start with like a basic level of, of trust, but then you have to go forward. In Canada, it’s like different people in, in, in Quebec in particular, because I don’t say Quebec is different from Canada. Sure. It has

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:29):
A diff Quebec is more French

Evangelism Student #1 (36:31):
In their culture. Exactly, exactly. And exactly. I live in Quebec. Yeah. So Quebec is different from other portion of Canada. In Quebec, you have first to build trust to, to to know people and then they trust you. There’s no basic level of trust that you have from the start. You have to find your place and build that, that trust. If you are in a context where you are friends, then it’s different. But before that you have to build your own, like your own, I don’t know how to say it. Your own relationship and Yeah. And go from there. Yeah. And this is one portion. And also I’ve noticed that, I’ve noticed in my own church also this what, what you are sharing, I have noticed this like fight over misunderstanding cultures. Yeah. And about time, for example, how, how do you bring people that have another understanding of time and the importance of time.

(37:38):
People are more focused on relationship than on rules. This is very like, it’s like a fight. You don’t, you don’t put this together. So in, in, in Canada, what I’ve noticed from my local church, for example, the, the pastor is very focused on principles. Time is important and you do this, but African are more focused on relationship. Yeah. You have to understand this different. I understand both. So because I, I’m coming from Africa, but I live in Canada, so I understand also the, the priority of time and rules and so on. But I also understand that also honoring people is extremely important. You don’t mess with that. If you, you, you, you misunderstand. This part is very difficult, different. And coming from Africa, I also understand that that portion, and I also understand the fact that you have to go to straight to the fact and don’t mess around with things that are not that important.

(38:35):
I live both culture inside of me. And the most important, which is for me is the culture of the kingdom. This is what is most the most important to me. Yeah. But for me, it’s like we are getting prepared to go preach, preach the gospel. I’m going back in Africa and different countries in Africa, hopefully, and I know the cultural shock, even coming from Africa, I still have to learn some things. Perhaps the, the, the, the gap is not as big as someone else, but I still have to get myself acquainted to different cultures, to different way of thinking. Because in Africa, in itself, from a country to another, it’s not the same, the same culture, you still have to learn. So

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (39:22):
Yeah. Even within a country, different tribes Exactly. Will have a completely different

Evangelism Student #1 (39:25):
Culture. Exactly. For example, in KVA we have 50 languages that are spoken just in Covo. So you cannot take for granted that, because I understand this way of thinking that it’s like the same everywhere. No, it’s not. And if you go with also local leaders and local officials, it’s not the same. Also, you have to, to understand that it’s a process that you have to learn. And for me my question was, was like regarding your experience

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (39:58):
Yeah.

Evangelism Student #1 (39:59):
How do you do to get yourself prepared? And how much did it take you to, you know, to be like more flexible regarding that cultural aspect?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (40:12):
Yeah. Well, I still make mistakes. Okay.

Evangelism Student #1 (40:15):
<Laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (40:16):
But I think

(40:19):
I showed you how I do it in this question. Yeah. You know, first of all, I love people from Ivory Coast. Yeah. You know, so I would start there that I love you. Yeah. I see that you are a man of God. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>, and you have a passion for God. And so that gives us something common that, that we can, we can work with. And then I would look for anything that we would have in common. So, you know, my wife is from Canada, so I share that. Oh good. You are from Canada. That’s wonderful. So, you know, I’m looking for, I’m looking for things that we do have in common. Cuz every human has things in common, you know you know, I, I share stories about my son and my daughter. I find all over the world, people are proud of their sons and their daughters, you know?

(41:02):
So that gives us something, you know, I talk about my wife, everyone understands that because they have that, those types of relationships. So I look for things in common, then I ask questions and I listen mm-hmm. <Affirmative>. And so I think your insight is extremely valuable, even for, for all of us. Because you do understand both cultures. Yes. The the culture that you came from and then your adopted culture in, in Canada. And you, you have an understanding. And, and, and so I think that I, I try to listen, I ask questions. I try to listen. Like before I go, I would do research on the country research on their religion. What religion they believe I would, I would look at different things. Just try to, to to prepare myself. Okay. But ask questions, listen, show, honor and respect the same things I’m doing with you now. Thank you. Yeah. Very good. Good question. Come on. Give him a great big hand. Wasn’t that? Yeah. Great insight.

Evangelism Student #2 (42:10):
Yeah. Hi. I’m from Germany and God just called us, like us as a family to be missionaries in the United States. Welcome and thank you. And it really came as a surprise because I, I thought God will send us to Asia or Africa. And then he talked about the United States, and I was like, okay, that’s easy. Like that’s a western country. But I talked to missionaries from Germany. They are they are living in the States, and they said it’s a different culture and we have to learn a new culture. And that surprised me. So, and I’m asking you so what could you give me any tips or what to be aware of when you are a German coming to the States and like what topics are, you know, you know what I mean? Like what is important to

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (42:59):
Know? How, how long have you been here?

Evangelism Student #2 (43:02):
So now I’m here since the end of December, but we are going to move here, I think in summer. Okay. So, yes, it’s very fresh. <Laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (43:10):
What, what what are some of the differences you’ve already noticed?

Evangelism Student #2 (43:14):
The people are very open and very friendly and very cool. And making friendships. And it’s different in Germany, like you’re building trust over a period of time and you’re not so open as a German. So yeah, that’s a big difference. I

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (43:31):
Think that’s true. Americans tend to be very friendly, but sometimes it’s a superficial Yes. Friendship. It’s very surface level. Like, Hey, I’m your friend, and then you, like they never call you or anything. Okay. <laugh>. And so that might be difficult to get used to. Yes. so I think that, that you can bring the good from the German culture, the the value of, of deep friendships. Yes. And, and, and build some deep friendships. But you’ll have to be intentional about building friendships with people. You’ll have to, to to work at it and realize that just superficial level of friendliness is it will be unsatisfying. You’ll think everyone is friendly, but no one is my friend. Yes. So to have true friends, you still have to work at it here in America. Yes.

Evangelism Student #2 (44:27):
Mm-Hmm. <Affirmative>. Yeah. So do you say, would you say it longer to really build real friendships like Sure. And to invest and

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (44:38):
So on? Sure. The, the only way to build a friendship is, is time. And Yes. Shared Yes. Shared experiences. Yes.

Evangelism Student #2 (44:47):
So thank you. Yeah. That’s good to know. <Laugh>. Thank

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (44:49):
You. I hope that you feel very welcome here. Yes. So we welcome you. America needs you. Yes. We need a revival. Bring Amen. Some fire from Germany. Yes, my sister. Hi

Evangelism Student #3 (45:03):
Everyone. My name is Annmarie and I’m from VOI and I have always had a problem. I’m a picky eater and I’m still working on it. So I guess this is going to be my problem. So my question is, what do you do when you go on a mission field and people, they offer you food or drink, and it’s very difficult. <Laugh>, for example, you say no, for example. Yes. For example, in the Ivory coast in the South, we have a tradition of offering people some hot, really hot paper. Really hot paper. It’s powdered chili, powdered real, nothing mixed with that chili powder. <Laugh>. You have never eaten chili. How do you eat that? And then we also have this issue of drinking, for example, some Christian that say you can drink wine. Some others said, no wine, because it’s still alcohol. Do you drink that wine when we you have stopped drinking wine or any kind of alcohol for years? How do you do that? That’s my question. I

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (46:39):
I would just be polite and, and grateful, say, oh, thank you so much. I, I don’t drink that, or, or, thank you. You, you honor me with your bringing me this. But you know, can I, may, may I have some water or something? Okay. You know, I, I think you can be sensitive to it, but without insulting it. Okay. You know,

Evangelism Student #3 (47:01):
So we can say no.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (47:03):
Yeah. You can say,

Evangelism Student #3 (47:04):
No, this is not good for my

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (47:05):
Health. I can say no. Yeah. You can say no. Say, oh, I’m fasting today. <Laugh>.

Evangelism Student #3 (47:10):
Okay. That’s what I was.

How Do I Find a Key to Evangelize a Nation?

Evangelist Marilyn Hickey talks about how every country has a key that will open the door to share the gospel. But how do you discover what that key is? In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how to find that key in each nation and how to use it to make your evangelism more effective for the kingdom of God.

Evangelist Marilyn Hickey talks about how every country has a key that will open the door to share the gospel. But how do you discover what that key is? In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how to find that key in each nation and how to use it to make your evangelism more effective for the kingdom of God.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:30):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Student (00:54):
Thank you. I got like, you go to the places, like as you mentioned, like as you were talking earlier, the door, Lord always open the door. There’s always a key. Yeah. So like, how do you know that key? That’s the key actually. The Lord is actually telling himself. Yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:09):
So this is something that Marilyn Hickey told me. Marilyn Hickey, great female evangelist. She told me that every country has a key that will open the door to share the gospel in that country. And every country is different. And, and sometimes even within a country, you’ll have different things. So like in Africa, one of the keys that draws people is miracles. You advertise miracles. Sometimes in Africa, people will walk two or three days to, to get to the crusade because they, they desperately want a miracle. But then we advertised miracles in some other countries and it seemed like not as many people were coming. Like we, we went to Indonesia and we advertised miracles. And there there weren’t very many people at that crusade. And so the next time we went, instead of emphasizing miracles, we emphasized the music. And we found that lots of young people came when we were, we had talked about all the special bands that we had and, and that that was the attraction for them.

(02:17):
And so we had Christian bands up there playing and we had all these, you know, 17 to 18 year old kids right out in front of the platform. They’re all smoking and, and dancing. And, and then we got up and preached the gospel. You know, but the reason those young people weren’t coming is cuz they, when we advertise miracles is cuz those young people like didn’t need a miracle. Like if you’re young, you’re usually healthy, you’re strong. And in Africa, there’s no doctors. So the only way for them to get healed is to come for miracles. But sometimes there’s other keys that can open the door. So in, in, we were did a event in Sudan, South Sudan, and we were able to give away eight big truckloads of food. Wow. And we found that food was the key that unlocked the door in, in South Sudan.

(03:06):
And so you, you really have to ask the Holy Spirit to give you the key that will open the door for the country that, that you go to. And every country’s going to be different. I mean, there’s gonna be common themes between different countries, but what works in Thailand is not necessarily the same thing that works in Africa. It, it’s a different atmosphere. It’s a different, and so you, you have to be smart. You have to be wise in how you organize the crusade, what attracts the local churches to be involved, what you know, how you relate to people. So all of that goes into it. Great question. Thank you. So the, the how to find the key. You find the key by talking to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit knows the key. You gotta go to the throne room of heaven and say, God, help me. Tell me what’s gonna work in this place. Are
