Gola Tiruneh shares his journey from being born in Ethiopia to becoming a Canadian citizen and eventually settling in Indonesia. He discusses how he felt called to do missions work in Indonesia, despite initial hesitation from his family. Gola and his wife Esther have been involved in various ministries in Indonesia, including conducting crusades and reaching out to unreached tribes. They focus on preaching the simple gospel and praying for miracles to happen, in order to bring awareness of the gospel to different areas. Gola also expresses his desire to train local missionaries and encourage local believers to be evangelists. He mentions the challenges of working with Indonesian believers, who may have fear or hesitation when it comes to evangelism.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:00):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast. I’m Daniel King and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus. Today I have a very special guest with me, Gola Tiruneh from Indonesia.
(00:13):
Now, you were actually born in Ethiopia.
(00:16):
That’s right.
(00:17):
And then you came to Canada, became a Canadian citizen at a young age, and now you are living in Indonesia. Tell me about that journey. How’d you end up here?
Gola Tiruneh (00:29):
Well, yes. I was born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. I left there at a young age. My family has always traveled mainly for my father’s work. And so we ended up in India for a couple of years. It was about 10 years old at the time, and soon after, two years after that, my family decided to move to Canada mainly for education. And I just completed grade eight at the time. And I arrived in Montreal, Canada and had to learn French so I can continue with my grade nine. So I did grade nine in French and grade 10, 11, 12 finished in Ontario. So my family is in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. That’s where I spent most of my time. And
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:32):
Let’s talk about Indonesia. How did you end up coming here to the nation of Indonesia?
Gola Tiruneh (01:39):
Well, it started during my high school years. The Lord started speaking to me through many different ways, through people would point me out of a crowd and start to prophesy over me going to these places, preaching to thousands of people. And that used to scare me actually, when I used to get those kind of words. And then the Lord would speak to me through dreams and visions and I would see myself in front of Asians, people doing ministry. And so it was a process for the Lord to kind of help me along. I did have a desire for missions, but at the same time I also had this fear in me of going so far from family. Indonesia is quite far from Canada. It’s literally the other side of the world. So I remember when I made the decision to go to Indonesia, my family was not for it, majority of my family. And even I was a little bit not sure what was going to happen. I wanted to go to Ethiopia to do missions, but I ended up to Indonesia in 2004 through a Bible school that I went to in Canada, in St. Catherine’s area near Niagara Falls. And ended up here in October, 2004, about 20 years ago now. And within a few months I loved Indonesia. It’s just everything turned out to be totally different than what it was in my mind and ended up staying here and doing.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:27):
Now you met your wife Esther, here in Indonesia. She’s Indonesia. And how long have you been married now? We’ve
Gola Tiruneh (03:34):
Been married for 14 years.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:36):
And your son Benjamin? Yes. Is 10 years old. Is 10
Gola Tiruneh (03:40):
Years old.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:40):
And so how did God bring you and your wife Esther together?
Gola Tiruneh (03:44):
Well, we met in a church, the church that my team was working with when we first came to Indonesia. And she was also involved in her church. She was a full-time ministry in the church. And so we always bumped to each other. And she was also one of the translators for guests that come to speak. So she translated for me a couple of times and that’s how we met. And six years later we got married.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:17):
And tell me a little bit about your wife’s journey. How did she become a believer?
Gola Tiruneh (04:21):
Well, my wife Esther is from a Buddhist background, and she was saved during the Christmas service in her church. Somebody invited her and it was a long process for her also, but she made a decision to be a believer in her teams also during her teams. And then she joined the church. She’s been working in our church since, and that’s what we ended up meeting.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:54):
Indonesia is a very unique nation, 270 million people. It’s the fourth largest nation in the world by population, and it’s the largest Muslim majority nation on earth, even bigger than Pakistan or Saudi Arabia. When people think of Muslim nations, they often think of that part of the world, but Indonesia actually has more Muslims than any other nation. And it’s a nation of islands over 17,000 different islands. That’s right. And so your ministry here, you’ve gone to many different islands to talk about
Gola Tiruneh (05:34):
Jesus. Yes. So we do a few things here in Indonesia. We do crusades, we call ’em festivals, festival of love. And we’ve done those different parts of Indonesia. They’re set up to reach people outside the church in a very friendly way. And we just focus on preaching the gospel very simple and pray for the sick, expect miracles to happen in these events. We have seen wonderful things that God has done, miracles such as deaf ears opening and people that couldn’t walk and being able to walk. And that brings a great awareness of the gospel in an area. And we have had Christians and non-Christians come into our events and to hear the gospel and to experience miracles. So a lot of what I’ve been doing is sowing seeds into areas, unreached areas. I love to go to unreached tribes. That’s another thing that we are doing in Indonesia currently, actually, we’re in the process of researching about 40 unreached tribes. And we are also formulating a strategy through partners to friends here and also overseas to reach these tribes. And so I spend a lot of my time in doing these crusades in villages at small towns and also working with these tribes. We also have a discipleship ministry that we are doing on a weekly basis in our hometown in Sumatra. And also through our pastor seminars, we encourage local believers to go out and evangelize.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:40):
And so this is real cutting edge ministry because you’re going into tribes that may have zero believers in the entire tribe. Exactly. And you are getting to know them, asking questions. It’s actually very valuable research so that people can know where the most need is. Right.
Gola Tiruneh (08:05):
So that’s my hope, number one, to create an awareness about these tribes. Most of them are very small, maybe like a couple of thousand people in a few villages. So they’re kind of hard to reach. Sometimes it takes days and you have to get on a boat and then get on a motorcycle, go trek into the jungle. But it’s the work that needs to be done. And my heart is eventually to train a local missionaries that will go there and be a witness to them in some form. And we are in the process of doing that. And also we hope it will create an awareness so that maybe there will be other people that will send missionaries there eventually, and so that the gospel can reach to each and every person.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:09):
Now in the Bible it says that every tribe and language, every ethnic group will be represented before the throne room in heaven. And so that’s why this type of ministry is so important because if they’re going to be in heaven, they need to hear the gospel. And if we don’t know who has heard the gospel, who hasn’t heard the gospel, we need to ask questions to find out who are the people that we’re missing that we want to take to heaven with us.
Gola Tiruneh (09:44):
That’s true, that’s true. And sometimes you got to go there to see what’s happening, especially these areas where there’s no believers, there’s no churches. Somebody needs to be there and live among the people and have some kind of a gospel representation. You may not be able to preach the gospel right away, but just having someone there will create opportunities for the gospel to be heard of. And my heart is, especially these tribes that are completely a hundred percent nonbelievers, at least we’ll get one or two families and then it will start to kind of snowball from there. And the best thing I have found in my experiences, Indonesians, reaching Indonesians is way more effective than us coming, for example, me coming from Canada. And they know the culture and they also know how to talk to these people. And that’s my heart right now is to raise local people and to motivate local believers to be missionaries.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:09):
And so one of your desires is even to start a training school That’s right. For people that would from Indonesia come to be trained in how to reach different people groups.
Gola Tiruneh (11:20):
Exactly. Yeah. Well, in Indonesia, the work of the evangelist and the missionaries kind of always the last thing on people’s thoughts. Many believers that want to go into ministry want to be pastors, which is great, but it’s mostly done in Christian areas. So there’s a lot of church planting happening, but in Christian areas, and it’s kind of hard for missionaries to go to these places because number one, they don’t know what to do
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:58):
And they stick out.
Gola Tiruneh (11:59):
They stick out. There’s also, of course, the financial thing. So we are trying encourage and motivate people to work in these kind of remote areas. And by God’s grace, we are finding people that have a heart for that. And we are already starting to partner with local people to reach some of these tribes. I’m visiting now.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:25):
Yeah, last night we were eating dinner with a local evangelists, and there was one woman there who said she just came back from a village. She lived there for three days and 35 people. She was having Bible studies with them and very primitive. Then she’s sleeping on the floor and no electricity, no plumbing. So it’s difficult ministry, but it’s extremely valuable
Gola Tiruneh (12:51):
Very much.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:52):
Now, several times you’ve mentioned the gospel preaching the simple gospel, and you’ve seen God work through that. Give me the gospel in a nutshell. What is the gospel that you preach?
Gola Tiruneh (13:07):
Well, the gospel is the good news of what God has done for us through the Lord Jesus Christ. And it’s actually the finished work of what Jesus has accomplished through his death, through his life is death, resurrection. And it is the story of how God redeemed mankind. So it is a simple but powerful story and we just focus in our events to, we don’t so much talk about religious stuff, we don’t compare religions, we don’t do any of that. We just simply speak about what Jesus has done for all people. And we encourage people also to experience this gospel. It’s not gospel of just words, but it’s an action. It’s in power. So I love the book of Acts and some of the things that the disciples did. And so what we try to do is in our events for we help people to experience how good God is through miracles.
(14:21):
And so there’s a scripture that says, come taste and see how good the Lord is. So let people have a taste of how good our God is and what he has done for us and how powerful it is. And especially, we always have miracle testimonies that we try to bring up interview people during our events and so that people will see that God is actually doing something. This is not just a story from 2000 years back, but this is happening now. And that brings an impact to the village or a small town or even the churches in that area. It would encourage them to believe and to continue to do the work that way.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:12):
So right now we are in the city of Kupong, and tonight the gospel festival begins. We went by to look at it last night, and it’s this beautiful plaza area right next to the ocean. And there were lots of vendors out there selling food even before the festival begins. There’s lots of people there, lots of kids running around. They had games and toys for the kids. And so what are you expecting to see God do here in Kupong this week?
Gola Tiruneh (15:44):
Well, I believe there is going to be through what is going to happen. People are going to have a clear representation of what the gospel is. And I’m believing for miracles. I’m believing for people to experience miracles that will lead to ’em opening their hearts to the gospel. So we’ve had events where deaf ears have opened people deaf from birth and things like that. And that causes people to attention, to put their attention to the gospel. It is kind of like the story of when Philip went to Samaria and preached the gospel and says, when people saw the miracles, they put attention to his words. And that’s what I’m expecting, that they will be a moment where people will realize, okay, this is real. Jesus is real, and what is my response to this? And so by the end of those three nights, my prayer is that people will realize, okay, this is not just religion. This is actually happening now and I need to respond to this.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:06):
Now, one of the things as an evangelist I think we’re called to do is to challenge the church as a whole to focus on evangelism. What response have you seen from the churches here in Indonesia? Do they have a heart to reach out to the loss? How are you encouraging them to focus on people who are
Gola Tiruneh (17:33):
Lost? Well, it is mixed response, right? So it is a challenge sometimes working with believers because of some history of maybe things that have happened in the past. And there’s a little bit of fear, hesitation to do evangelism. So most believers tend to just stick to their group or to their churches or their communities. There’s a few tribes in Indonesia that were reached by missionaries like 150 years ago. So they’re mainly Christian. So most of the believers in Indonesia are from this few tribes that are
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:23):
Been, but there’s many tribes here.
Gola Tiruneh (18:24):
There’s many tribes, and it’s from the 217 million, maybe 15 to 20% is Christian, so the rest of them are still yet to be reached. So it’s hard for believers at times because of may be fear or they don’t know what to do or how to approach other nonbelievers. So our festivals actually in a way help that to show them, okay, this is how you do it, or let’s do it together, and kind of helps build confidence in them to go out and do more outreaches. So really, our festivals are always been done in partnership with local churches, and that helps also to bring in enthusiasm, especially when they see, when the Christians see the miracles. Also there’s something that happens and say, wait, we can do this too. We can also preach the gospel. So that’s what we hope will happen also through these events, that it will revive the church and inspire the church to do evangelism in that area.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:39):
Well, it’s absolutely amazing the work that you and your wife Esther are doing here in Indonesia. If you’re listening and you have a heart for Indonesia, I’d encourage you to get connected with Gola. If someone would like to support you or their church would like to adopt you as one of their missionaries, what’s your website? How can they find out more information about you?
Gola Tiruneh (20:03):
We do have a website. Our ministry is a registered charity in Canada. It’s called Global Good News Initiative. The website is gg.org, gg ni.org, and you can go there and you find all the information you need, and you can be a partner through our charity in Canada. Yeah,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (20:29):
And are there opportunities for people to come to Indonesia to do evangelism or to work with you?
Gola Tiruneh (20:36):
Yes. Yeah. We always welcome people that have a heart for Indonesia, and we can do what we can and what is possible for us to do so that we can open doors also for people. So I’ve worked with different ministries in the past and we’ve had, yeah, we had a good experience also partnering with people.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:05):
That’s awesome. Well, let’s finish by praying for Indonesia, but instead of praying in English, you’ll pray in Indonesia, and let’s just pray for God to bless this nation.
Gola Tiruneh (21:21):
Okay, let’s do that. Alright. Hallelujah. Han Sadia, Indonesia, then Indonesia, they are. And Jesus sai. Amen.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (22:44):
Amen. Well, thank you Gola so much for being on the Evangelism Podcast. Yes,
Gola Tiruneh (22:49):
Thank you for having me. God bless you. Thank you.

Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.
Evangelism Student (00:54):
Thank you. I got like, you go to the places, like as you mentioned, like as you were talking earlier, the door, Lord always open the door. There’s always a key. Yeah. So like, how do you know that key? That’s the key actually. The Lord is actually telling himself. Yeah.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:09):
So this is something that Marilyn Hickey told me. Marilyn Hickey, great female evangelist. She told me that every country has a key that will open the door to share the gospel in that country. And every country is different. And, and sometimes even within a country, you’ll have different things. So like in Africa, one of the keys that draws people is miracles. You advertise miracles. Sometimes in Africa, people will walk two or three days to, to get to the crusade because they, they desperately want a miracle. But then we advertised miracles in some other countries and it seemed like not as many people were coming. Like we, we went to Indonesia and we advertised miracles. And there there weren’t very many people at that crusade. And so the next time we went, instead of emphasizing miracles, we emphasized the music. And we found that lots of young people came when we were, we had talked about all the special bands that we had and, and that that was the attraction for them.
(02:17):
And so we had Christian bands up there playing and we had all these, you know, 17 to 18 year old kids right out in front of the platform. They’re all smoking and, and dancing. And, and then we got up and preached the gospel. You know, but the reason those young people weren’t coming is cuz they, when we advertise miracles is cuz those young people like didn’t need a miracle. Like if you’re young, you’re usually healthy, you’re strong. And in Africa, there’s no doctors. So the only way for them to get healed is to come for miracles. But sometimes there’s other keys that can open the door. So in, in, we were did a event in Sudan, South Sudan, and we were able to give away eight big truckloads of food. Wow. And we found that food was the key that unlocked the door in, in South Sudan.
(03:06):
And so you, you really have to ask the Holy Spirit to give you the key that will open the door for the country that, that you go to. And every country’s going to be different. I mean, there’s gonna be common themes between different countries, but what works in Thailand is not necessarily the same thing that works in Africa. It, it’s a different atmosphere. It’s a different, and so you, you have to be smart. You have to be wise in how you organize the crusade, what attracts the local churches to be involved, what you know, how you relate to people. So all of that goes into it. Great question. Thank you. So the, the how to find the key. You find the key by talking to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit knows the key. You gotta go to the throne room of heaven and say, God, help me. Tell me what’s gonna work in this place. Are

Evangelism is often considered to be a spiritual gift. In Romans 12:6-8, the apostle Paul lists evangelism as one of the gifts of the Spirit: “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”
This passage suggests that evangelism is a special ability or talent that God gives to some believers to help them share the Gospel message with others. The gift of evangelism is often accompanied by a passion for sharing the Gospel and a desire to see others come to faith in Jesus.
However, it’s important to note that evangelism is not just a spiritual gift, but also a calling and a responsibility for all believers. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus tells his followers to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This passage, known as the Great Commission, calls all believers to share the Gospel message with others, regardless of whether or not they possess the spiritual gift of evangelism.
While the spiritual gift of evangelism may be given to some believers, all believers are called to share the Gospel message and to participate in evangelism in some way.

It is generally not too soon to share the Gospel with others, as long as it is done in a way that is respectful and appropriate. The Gospel message is a message of hope and salvation, and it is something that can be shared with people at any stage of life.
However, it’s important to approach evangelism with sensitivity and to consider the individual circumstances and needs of the person you are sharing with. Some people may be more receptive to hearing about faith and may be ready to explore the Gospel message in more depth. Others may not be ready to hear about faith or may not be interested in exploring it at this time. In these cases, it can be helpful to continue building a relationship with the person and to pray for them, rather than pushing the Gospel message on them.
Ultimately, the timing of when to share the Gospel with others will depend on the individual circumstances and needs of the person you are sharing with, as well as the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It’s important to be led by the Spirit and to approach evangelism with love and compassion.

Evangelism can be both a process and an event. It can involve a series of ongoing efforts to share the Gospel message with others and encourage them to follow Jesus. This can involve building relationships with people, engaging in conversations about faith, and providing support and encouragement to those who are exploring Christianity.
At the same time, evangelism can also involve specific events or campaigns that are focused on sharing the Gospel with a larger audience. These might include evangelistic crusades, evangelistic outreaches at festivals or public events, or other efforts to share the Gospel with a wider group of people.
Ultimately, the most effective evangelism efforts will often involve a combination of both ongoing efforts to share the Gospel with individuals and specific events or campaigns that are focused on reaching a larger audience. It’s important to approach evangelism in a way that is authentic and sensitive to the needs and interests of those who are being reached out to, and to be willing to adapt and adjust your approach as needed.
In addition to the strategies mentioned above, there are a few other things that can be helpful in growing your church:

As Christians, we are called to share the good news of Jesus with others. Evangelism, or the act of sharing the gospel with the intention of persuading others to adopt a particular belief or course of action, is an important part of our faith and a fundamental aspect of our mission as followers of Christ.
There are many good reasons for Christians to evangelize. First and foremost, we are commanded by Jesus himself to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This charge is not optional; it is a fundamental aspect of our identity as believers and an integral part of our mission as the Church.
In addition to being a commandment from Jesus, evangelism is also a way for us to fulfill our purpose as Christians. God created us to bring him glory and to serve as his ambassadors on earth (2 Corinthians 5:20). By sharing the gospel with others, we are able to fulfill this purpose and bring glory to God through our witness.
Evangelism is also an act of love. When we share the gospel with others, we are offering them the opportunity to experience the love, grace, and salvation that God has made available to us through Jesus. We are not just sharing a set of beliefs or ideas, but rather we are offering others the chance to have a personal relationship with the living God.
Finally, evangelism is an act of obedience. When we follow Jesus’ command to share the gospel with others, we are demonstrating our faith and trust in him. We are showing that we are willing to be obedient to his will, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone or facing challenges and obstacles.
In conclusion, evangelism is an important and necessary aspect of our faith as Christians. It is a way for us to fulfill our purpose, demonstrate our love for others, and be obedient to God’s will. So let us not be afraid to share the gospel with others, but rather let us be bold and courageous in our witness, knowing that God is with us and will give us the words to say (Luke 12:11-12). So, let’s go and evangelize with confidence, knowing that God is with us and will give us the strength and courage we need.

Yes, it is possible for a woman to be an evangelist. The Bible does not place any restrictions on women serving as evangelists, and there are examples of women in the Bible who played significant roles in spreading the gospel and leading others to faith in Jesus. For example, the New Testament mentions several women who were involved in evangelistic ministry, including Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2), Priscilla (Acts 18:26), and Lydia (Acts 16:14).
In the modern Church, there have also been many women who have served as evangelists and have had a significant impact in sharing the gospel and leading others to faith in Jesus. Women have often played important roles in evangelistic ministry, both as evangelists themselves and as support staff or volunteers.
It is important to note that the role of an evangelist is not limited by gender, and both men and women can serve effectively in this capacity. The most important qualification for an evangelist is not gender, but rather a calling from God and a passion for sharing the gospel with others.

In the Bible, an evangelist and a pastor are two different spiritual gifts or roles that are mentioned in the New Testament. Here is a brief overview of the main differences between an evangelist and a pastor:
It is important to note that the roles of evangelist and pastor are not mutually exclusive, and some individuals may have both gifts or roles. Additionally, the gifts of evangelist and pastor, like all spiritual gifts, are given by the Holy Spirit and are meant to be used for the benefit of the Church and for the glory of God.

Passive evangelism refers to the process of sharing the gospel or witnessing to others in a more subtle or indirect way, rather than through direct or overt evangelistic efforts. Passive evangelism may involve living a life that is visibly different from the world around you, or it may involve speaking about your faith in a natural or organic way as you interact with others.
Passive evangelism is sometimes contrasted with more active or aggressive forms of evangelism, such as personal evangelism or mass evangelism, which involve more overt efforts to share the gospel with others. Passive evangelism may be more suitable in certain contexts or with certain people, as it can be less threatening or confrontational and may be more effective in building relationships and trust.
It is important to note that passive evangelism is not a substitute for more proactive forms of evangelism, and it should not be used as an excuse for avoiding more direct efforts to share the gospel with others. However, it can be an effective complement to more proactive evangelism, and it can be an important way to live out the command to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16).

There are various ways to categorize different types of evangelism, and different people may use different criteria for classifying them. However, one common way to categorize evangelism is to divide it into two main categories: personal evangelism and mass evangelism.
Both personal evangelism and mass evangelism can be effective ways to share the gospel, and the appropriate approach will depend on the context and the needs of the people being evangelized. Some evangelists may focus primarily on one approach, while others may use a combination of both personal and mass evangelism in their ministry.

Yes, Jesus was an evangelist. The word “evangelist” comes from the Greek word “euangelion,” which means “good news” or “gospel.” Jesus was the ultimate evangelist, as he came to earth to share the good news of salvation through faith in him.
Throughout his ministry, Jesus preached the gospel and taught about the kingdom of God. He healed the sick, cast out demons, and performed many other miracles as signs of the good news that he was bringing. He also sent out his disciples to share the gospel with others, saying, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).
In addition to sharing the gospel through his words and actions, Jesus also modeled evangelism through his life. He lived a life of love, compassion, and selflessness, and he demonstrated the power of the gospel to transform lives.
Jesus was the ultimate evangelist and his ministry serves as an example for all believers to follow as we seek to share the gospel with others.

It is important to lead people to Jesus because he is the savior of the world and the only way for people to have a personal relationship with God. The Bible teaches that all people are separated from God because of their sin and that there is no way for them to be reconciled to God on their own (Romans 3:23). However, Jesus came to earth to provide a way for people to be reconciled to God through faith in him (John 3:16).
Leading people to Jesus is important because it gives them the opportunity to receive forgiveness of their sins and to have eternal life with God. It also helps people to grow in their relationship with God and to live a life that is pleasing to him.
In addition, leading people to Jesus is an important part of fulfilling the Great Commission, which is the command given by Jesus to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20). As believers, we are called to share the gospel with others and to help lead them to faith in Jesus.
Leading people to Jesus is an important part of the Christian life and is a way that we can fulfill God’s purpose for our lives and make a positive impact for the kingdom of God.

Yes, evangelists are needed in the world today. The mission of the church is to share the gospel, or good news, of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ with others, and evangelists play a key role in this mission.
Evangelists are individuals who are called by God to share the gospel with others and to lead people to faith in Jesus. They often focus on evangelism as their primary ministry and may travel to different places to share the gospel with people who may not have heard it before.
There is a great need for evangelists in the world today, as there are many people who have not yet heard the message of salvation through faith in Jesus. Evangelists can play a vital role in reaching out to these people and sharing the love of Christ with them.
In addition to sharing the gospel with those who have not yet heard it, evangelists can also play a role in helping to equip and encourage believers to share their faith with others. They can provide training, resources, and support to help believers become more effective in evangelism and in making a positive impact for the kingdom of God.
Evangelists are needed to help fulfill the Great Commission, which is the command given by Jesus to go and make disciples of all nations, and to share the gospel message with others.

Evangelism is the act of sharing the gospel, or good news, of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ with others. It is a central part of the mission of the Christian church, and it involves sharing the message of Jesus with those who may not yet have heard it.
Evangelism can take many forms, such as sharing the gospel through preaching, teaching, one-on-one conversations, or through the use of various media and technologies. The goal of evangelism is to lead people to faith in Jesus and to help them understand the message of the gospel.
Evangelism is an important part of the Christian life, as all believers are called to share their faith with others. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” This passage, known as the Great Commission, is a call for all believers to be involved in evangelism and to share the gospel message with others.
Evangelism is not just the work of a select few, but rather it is a calling for all believers to share the love of Jesus with those around them. Whether through intentional evangelistic efforts or through everyday conversations and interactions, all believers are called to be ambassadors for Christ and to share the good news of the gospel with others.

The word “gospel” is derived from the Old English word “godspel,” which means “good news.” In the New Testament, the word “gospel” refers to the good news of the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel is the central message of Christianity, and it is based on the belief that Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth to redeem humanity from sin through his death and resurrection.
The gospel is found in the four Gospels of the New Testament, which are the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books tell the story of Jesus’ life, ministry, death, and resurrection, and they present the gospel message that through faith in Jesus, people can receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
The gospel is also referred to as the “gospel of Jesus Christ,” the “gospel of the kingdom,” and the “gospel of the grace of God.” It is the message that has the power to transform lives and bring salvation to those who believe.

The Great Commission is the instruction given by Jesus to his disciples to spread the gospel, or Good News, of salvation through faith in him to all nations. The biblical account of the Great Commission is recorded in the New Testament, specifically in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, as well as in the Book of Acts.
In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In this passage, Jesus is instructing his disciples to go out into the world and share the message of salvation through faith in him. He also emphasizes the importance of baptizing new believers and teaching them to follow his commands. The Great Commission is a central part of the mission of the Christian church, and it is a call for all believers to share the love of Christ with others.
In Mark 16:15, Jesus says: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
In Luke 24:46-48, Jesus says: “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”
In the Book of Acts, the Great Commission is fulfilled as the apostles and other believers share the message of salvation through faith in Jesus with people of different cultures and languages. The Great Commission is an important aspect of the Christian faith, as it calls believers to share the Good News of Jesus with others and to make disciples of all nations.

Two words that are often used in Christianity are evangelism and discipleship. Some use these two words interchangeably, but they are actually two different things. Let’s take a look at what each of them is and how they are different.
Evangelism is the act of spreading the Gospel. It is telling people about who Jesus is and giving them a chance to respond to the Gospel by speaking with them and communicating God’s love to them.
Evangelism tends to be the start of someone’s journey in their faith. Through evangelism, many will come to hear the Gospel, some even for the first time, and either believe and want to know more, or continue on their way.
Whether we realize it or not, all Christians have been evangelized in some way. Whether it was a friend who told you about Jesus and the Bible, or you heard it on the street, that still is evangelism. It is simply the spreading of the Gospel message.
Discipleship takes evangelism a step further by taking someone who has been evangelized and now teaching them what it means to be a Christian.
The word ‘disciple’ means to be a follower or a student of some kind of philosophy or way of living. Think about the disciples in the Bible. They spent endless time with Jesus, learning from Him, hearing Him teach and adopting His ways in their own lives.
Another word for discipleship could even be mentoring. To disciple someone is to take them under your wing and live life with them, supporting them and building them up to be more mature in their faith.
Discipleship is, in fact, the great commission that all followers of Jesus were given when Jesus ascended into heaven:
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Discipleship was the final command that we were given by Jesus. It is to go and build people up in Christ to be strong believers and followers of Jesus, observing all that Jesus commanded us.
You could say that discipleship starts with evangelism. If someone were to come to Christ and then begin to learn what it means to be a Christ-follower from someone else, they would first be evangelized to accept the Gospel, and then begin to be discipled.
The reason why this is important becomes clear when we look at most churches today. Many churches today have nailed what it looks like to evangelize and bring people the Gospel. They’re having events where they preach the Gospel and they’re getting out into the community to witness to people and share their faith with others. However, many are missing out on the discipleship part.
This would be the equivalent of getting someone excited and interested in flying a plane but never teaching them how to fly. When they get behind the controls and get off the ground, when the storms come and they enter a cloud, they’ll, unfortunately, crash and burn.
This is what happens when we evangelize but don’t disciple. We are giving people new life by spreading the Gospel and getting them excited about following Jesus, but we aren’t teaching them how to actually do so. Instead, what often happens is that churches move on to the next evangelism event without discipling and helping those who were evangelized at the previous event.
This often creates a lot of confusion and doubt in many new believers’ minds as to their decision. Some may think that they just had to initially believe and can now go back to living the same way they were living before. Others may have doubt about the validity of the Gospel since they aren’t being helped to understand what to do next. When it comes to evangelism and discipleship, you simply cannot have one without the other.
So, let us get out and share our faith, but let us also disciple those who are learning and build one another up to be mature believers in Christ. Then those disciples can go and evangelize and disciple others, building the Kingdom as it was always meant to happen.

Evangelism is a big word and frequently people do not know what the word means. In the Christian space, we often use big words that can be difficult to actually understand in their entirety. Words like sanctification, justification, or propitiation aren’t exactly used in our everyday language, but they are important to understand as they relate to Christianity. We’re going to be taking a look at one of these words and see what it truly means in the context of our Christian lives. So, what is evangelism?
Evangelism, at its core, is the act of spreading the gospel or the good news of Jesus Christ. The gospel is the message that our self-destructive sin separates us from God and that in order for us to be reconciled back to God, Jesus, the Son of God, was born as a human, lived a perfect life for 33 years on this earth, and died on a cross to take the punishment for our sins. Three days later, He rose again from the grave, defeating death, and paving a path for us to also have divine life for eternity through Him.
Evangelism is communicating this good news to others. Since this is good news and it has the power to save people’s souls, we shouldn’t keep it a secret. In fact, Jesus, before He ascended back to heaven, gave us a mission to take this message to the entire world so that everyone might have life. Technically, He was charging us to evangelize to the entire world.
Interestingly enough, you may notice that within the word ‘evangelism’ is the word ‘angel’. Whether this was intentional or not, it adds another layer of understanding to the word since in the Bible, angels act as God’s messengers. Throughout the Bible, we see many instances of God sending a message to certain humans through an angel. Similarly, we now act as God’s messengers for the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are to go to people and deliver God’s message of truth, grace, and abundant life for now and all eternity.
Some people may wonder if evangelism is a must or if only certain people are called to evangelize. After all, many people are extroverted and enjoy talking to people. Others are introverted and prefer not to go and talk to strangers about such issues as religion and beliefs about eternity. So, is everyone called to evangelize?
The answer is… yes! Everyone is called to evangelize, whether you’re introverted or extroverted. When Jesus left this earth, He commissioned all His disciples to go and spread the message of His gospel to the ends of the earth. However, He didn’t leave them without some help. He also sent the Holy Spirit to assist them in their mission and to guide them into all truth.
If you are uncomfortable with evangelizing or sharing the gospel with people, remember that you aren’t alone. If you are a born-again true believer of Jesus, you have the Holy Spirit inside of you who is called the Helper for a very good reason. In our times of need, He gives us the right words to say to bring people to God. You don’t have to rely on your own personality or knowledge when you evangelize because God is right there with you through His Spirit. He will take care of you and help you when you need it.
What we also must understand is that the call to spread the gospel is not one that should be undertaken merely out of duty, but out of love for people. Jesus said that the most important commandments are to love God and love people. Sharing the gospel and evangelizing is a way of loving people. In fact, it is the best way that we can possibly love people.
If the gospel is true and Jesus is the only way to true and eternal life for now and all eternity, shouldn’t we want to communicate that truth to people out of love? Evangelizing is the highest form of love to others because it is, in effect, an attempt to save their soul by the power of Christ.
So, don’t think of evangelism as something you have to do. Think of it as something that you get to do. Take time to thank God for partnering with you in His plans to reconcile and redeem humanity to Himself. Rely on the Holy Spirit as you evangelize and in your obedience, God will help you and protect you as you are communicating His message to the rest of the world.

Pastor Chas Stevenson (00:03):
My name is Chas Stevenson. I’m with Houston Faith Church. I’m the pastor there. My wife and I been pastoring for 14 years before I was an evangelist. I was a Christian and being a Christian meant that I was filled with the holy spirit and able to witness. And so I started trying to catch up to all the other Christians fishing for men. I found out that Jesus said, follow me that I’ll make you a Fisher of men. So just as a baby Christian, I thought I could, I gotta start doing this. And it was a little scary at first, but I, I felt the obligation to Jesus, to practice fishing and to fish for men and to catch men. And then I realized so few Christians are actually doing that. And when I felt the call to ministry, I went ahead and prayed through and found a certain aspect that I could help churches.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (00:52):
And so I would approach churches that I can help. All of your churches members become the Christian. They were meant to be and help them begin to share their faith with others and have better success than ever before. So that was how I felt Christianity or being a Christian crossed into getting everybody involved in evangelism. I think the secret to the, to the world harvest the secret to changing your nation, your state, your city, your community is found the secret to the whole thing is found sitting right in the church seat. His name is the believer. The believers is the key to everything. All right, when we take surveys in churches, we ask how many of you came to Christ through television and maybe one out of a hundred hands will go up. How many of you came to Christ through radio? Usually zero, these days out of a hundred came through radio.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (01:44):
How many of you came to Christ? Because a believer shared their faith with you. 90% of the hands go up. And then some people raised their hand. How many of you got saved in a church? And so the other 10% are done in church. The believer is the key. 90% of people that are saved, get saved through the witness of a believer. Even if it’s a parent or a friend or a relative, the believers is the one that’s been spreading this gospel all along. Anyway, even though I know that television does, does get some saved, they do a good job teaching, but that’s not the secret to the harvest. It’s not the key to really evangelism. So in our church, we, once we find the solution to evangelism is in the chairs, usually in Christians who have lost their purpose, Christians so often sit there for years frustrated, not, not knowing what to do.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (02:34):
What am I called to do? I’m waiting for my call. I’m waiting for my door to open. Where’s my title. What position can I have? What’s my grace. What’s my gift. And then that goes on for months and years. And they just sit there kind of stagnated when the truth is, if they have the holy spirit, they’re ready. If they know one scripture they’re ready, or we could say this, if they’re saved, they’re ready. The lady that Jesus got saved at the well, she ran on day one, didn’t know anything about anything. Except I found the Messiah. She ran got the whole half of the city saved and the other half came to Jesus and got saved one day. She evangelized the whole city because she found the Messiah. And so really the secrets there, it’s, it’s about keeping that as, as the, the vision, the focus, the emphasis that every one of us here are obligated, responsible, and able every Christian in the church, able to reach others tomorrow for the Lord, Jesus Christ, you know, in, in a natural way, sheep bear sheep shepherds, don’t bear sheep, but sheep bear sheep.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (03:38):
And so we can’t rely on the pulpit, even though there was a time when that was most important, we can’t rely on the pulpit to win all the souls. Okay. It’s great. If you bring a center to church, hopefully they’ll hear the message you get saved, but I found just as many or more get saved after the service with the believer in the car, driving away from church, that Believer’s important. He’s the one that needs to lead people to Jesus, even if they didn’t respond to some altar call. And so we can’t rely on the leaders to get everybody saved. Every Christian should be a healthy enough sheep to lead someone else to Jesus. So if you think about it, a female sheep, who’s not barren in the natural. There’s something wrong. Who’s not barring sheep. A female sheep should bear some sheep. And if not, they’re gonna get eaten, right?
Pastor Chas Stevenson (04:26):
You gotta, you gotta produce here. So Christians who aren’t barring sheep, there’s usually something wrong there not to put people down, but there’s something spiritually wrong, not, not healthy that the pastor or the shepherd has to recognize. I gotta get my sheep healthy so that they will naturally bear sheep out there. Some of it’s so simple but we’ve exempted so many for so long. We’ve exempted so many Christians because they didn’t feel the quite the boldness, right? I’m not the extrovert. And so I can’t do that kind of thing. Oh, we, we turn every introvert into a disciple. I mean, into a, into a Fisher of men. And it’s beautiful to see even the non extroverts be able to share their faith. One on one with some friend over the coffee table and it’s Glos or strangers. I mean, we’ve got introverts approaching strangers, handing a track, leading them to Jesus.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (05:17):
So everything we do is kind of designed to empower the believer and remind the believer. And there’s a little bit to that, but the secret is the believer. Absolutely. We don’t have an evangelism class where we’re expecting everybody to come to and train for 12 weeks and then send you out to the streets to knock on doors. That’s what we don’t do, cuz that’s way too intimidating and too scary. And it only touches about 2% of the people, only those who are already interested in the evangelism really come to that. The rest think they’re exempted. Okay. So the key is this. The key is to present the true commission of Jesus Christ as if it applies to everyone, everyone after the holy spirit and power has come upon, you’ll receive power and you shall be witnesses that’s for everybody. So we have to dispel a lot of the myth that peop people have been under for quite a while.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (06:09):
Christians have just been mistrained in just little inconsistencies with scripture, thinking that an evangelist is, is who wins souls. And I’ve discovered that an evangelist and a soul winner are two different things. They could be the same. They’re not necessarily the same, a soul winner or a Christian witness is one who leads others to Jesus. An evangelist is an office that someone stands in that has a different grace, a special grace for mass crusades and or reminding the church of their great commission. But that’s an office to ed to five, the saints, remember in Ephesians four he gave all five offices for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry. And so the evangelist is designed to Edify the church. Whereas the believer is designed to win a sin, even though certainly the evangelist would have an extra grace and power and anointing to do mass things and crowd things.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (07:06):
And with, with gifts of the spirit on purpose to lead many, many to Jesus, but that’s different than a witness. And that’s where we’ve lost a lot of people, they think, well, I’m not an evangelist. I can’t do that. Wait don’t you aren’t you able to talk at lunch with a friend about different things? Yeah. I can do that. Well then you can share Christ at lunch with a friend. And so that’s where the same thing with like prayer ministry. We’ve said that, well, they, they have a special anointing to pray and they have a special anointing to win souls. So we’ll send them on their own. I don’t really feel called to the prayer group or the street group and that’s okay, but we can’t exempt everybody else. Let them think. Well, I’m not, everybody’s supposed to pray. There’s no gift of praying and there’s no gift of soul winning.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (07:52):
You realize that there’s no gift of soul winning ever mentioned in the scripture. The gift is the holy spirit. And he’s been given to everybody to present Christ with authority and with a lively, you know, resurrection power. And so the whole thing is, is dispelling some of these rumors another rumor I was thinking of is some people have been taught that you’re only supposed to be led when sharing your faith. Like I’m gonna wait till the holy spirit leads me before I ever say anything. You’ll be waiting a long time. You’ll be waiting a lot. And if you really want to be led, if you really want to be led, just read mark chapter 16, where it says go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. And you can just stop right there. He said that to you and I didn’t, he, every believer needs to realize he said that to.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (08:41):
So for the rest of my life, all, all I need to do is tell every single person the gospel and I will have obeyed the spirit. I will have been led by the spirit because he led the, the writing of the scriptures, right? So we have to start somewhere. So instead of having a red light on all the time, waiting for it to turn green, where God says, now you can preach the gospel to somebody, have it on green and be willing and ready to tell everybody until it turns red, that’s a whole different perspective. Isn’t it? And then there’s the fears and the uncertainty and the intimidation of in a conversation. So we, we help everybody get through that, but there’s some secrets in the church that over time everybody can come along there. You know, we do at our church have a monthly evangelism event that we get U different people to lead.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (09:30):
Whatever is on your heart. Well, I want to go to the park and do an outreach. Okay. Everybody can go to the park with you. We’ll have anywhere from 10 to 40 people go on these events. And we encourage some of the young Christians about it that, Hey, if you’ve never done this and you’re a little scared go to one of these and hide behind somebody don’t, you don’t have to say a word, do anything you can just watch. And before the day’s over, they’re like, wow, this is so easy. It’s so easy to lead others to Jesus. How do you do it? You ignore the ones that don’t want Jesus and you, and you’d spend time with ones that do, this is not about you arguing Jesus. And this is where so many people, they back off office. Like, I don’t know how to argue.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (10:10):
Jesus. You’re not supposed to do that. You’re just looking out there for the ripe ones. Right? Think about how many times the word of God’s liken to the seed and the farmer to the believer of the preacher, right? What does a, what does a farmer do when he plants? Let’s say tomatoes, farmer, plants, tomatoes in the ground and waters and waters and waters and takes care of. And he doesn’t do, he doesn’t try to pull a fruit day. One. He just waters and waters and waters. And he doesn’t try to start pulling green tomatoes. If the tomatoes not rip, don’t pull it. I mean, I know some people want the fried green tomatoes, but if the tomato’s not right, don’t pull it. It’s too hard to pull. It comes. You know, you pull in the vine, you’re ripping things, your, your, your hands get all smelly with vine juice.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (11:00):
On the other hand, when the tomato turns red or starts to turn red, it’s easy to pull it. You just kind of tap it and it’ll fall off in your hand. Same thing with soul winning. You don’t force the green ones that aren’t ready yet. All you’re doing is looking for ripe ones. How do you know if it’s a ripe one? You ask them, would you like to receive Jesus today? If they say, no, you say, okay, bye-bye or you tell ’em some nice things or whatever, but you don’t spend time on those that aren’t ready. Makes it easy. Doesn’t it? So there might be 10 people that aren’t ready. You’re looking for the one that is ready. The scripture says that to that the Lord ordained such that that should be saved, right? I think every day there’s a group that’s ordained and ready to be saved.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (11:42):
We’re looking for those. So when we do our outreaches, we’ll preach to a thousand people and 50 will be saved. We did it. We didn’t fail 950 times. We succeeded a thousand times preaching and telling is success. Planting a seed is success. So we, we have to remember, don’t expect everybody get saved and look at your successes as those that you reached. Okay. One final thing for pastors. There’s this feeling about evangelism that if we’re gonna do an outreach, we’re doing it so that we can get people into our church. I found that as a, almost a hundred percent failure rate, maybe that’s exaggeration, but it’s a high failure rate. Okay. Especially when you’re leading people to Jesus, if you’re doing an event and, and making a big deal and showing people your church, maybe you get some church members, but those who receive Jesus on the streets, don’t normally go straight to the church where the person was that saved them, or that led ’em to Jesus.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (12:46):
Okay? So you can’t expect that otherwise everybody will be discouraged. Wow. We’ve led all these people to the Lord. And nobody came to our church. We have, what are we doing? You need to look at it that way. You’re planting seed, where you don’t reap. Somebody else will reap where you sewed. But if you’ll to get involved in that, then God will let you reap where you didn’t sew. And so don’t look at it as I have to get them in my church. Typically, when a person gets saved or a center gets saved on the streets or out in public their first thought is I’m gonna go to church with so, and so my friend who’s been asking me to go for years, my aunt, they run to somebody familiar. Who’s going to a Christian Church. Okay. You can encourage ’em to do that. They’re not gonna go with a stranger.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (13:31):
So outreach to strangers, don’t expect them to, to come into your church and, and just flock in because you were out there getting ’em saved. That’s one of the myths that kind of, you know, put the, put the breaks on evangelism. It looks discouraging. Don’t feel like that. Look at it. As we succeeded, we reached everybody in our city and that’s our goal. Reach everybody in our city. As a senior pastor, I think there’s one key ingredient to causing evangelism, to explode and continue in any local church anywhere. And it does depend on the pastor. It does depend on the leader because he kind of runs the show, runs the meeting and keeps whatever vision he’s got going. He’s the one. So here’s, here’s the secret really? And it happens in our church. We, we get this working in our church and it’s amazing the results we see, I call it the four year principle.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (14:25):
And, and what I do is I, I look back at the book of acts after Jesus departed, after he sent the holy spirit, after they were filled and started the ministry what was the local church? What did it look like on day one? What did it look like on week two? When people would come to church? What did the four year sound like? Okay. what was the conversation at church? It certainly about the news of the day or the, the sports teams or anything like that, which that’s all, that’s fine. But because of the excitement around this gospel and the resurrection of Jesus, I think the conversation in the foyer was something like, Hey, what did y’all do this week for God? Hey, did you hear about Peter and John at the gate? They got that guy healed. Yeah. I heard about that.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (15:11):
That was awesome. Hey, listen, what I did, I, there was these teenagers walking by on the street. I led him to, I told him about Jesus being resurrected. They didn’t know that he got resurrected. And then I baptized him in the, in the pond right there, man, what did you do? What did you do? And we’re doing what he said. So there was this whole, we obeying Jesus conversation. I just have a feeling. That’s what happened at least for a while. At least until Jude said, come on, you guys earnest Lee contend for that faith. It was once delivered to the saints. Remember that? And so that aspect just kind of reveals. We need some convers, some right conversation in church. All right. So what we do at our church or what’s so I think it could be anywhere is we have a time, every service to mention the works we do for God.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (16:00):
Whereas a lot of churches will have testimony time. What did, what, what did God do for anybody? Did anybody wanna testify? We specifically say, what did you do for God this week? Anybody wanna say, and people will begin to say what they did at work. I passed out a track. I talked to my friend, I made a phone call. I led the so. And so to the Lord, how many of you led someone to Jesus? What’s our soul count? Did we convert anybody this week? Did we turn anybody to Christ this week? And I’ll look through the congregation in one hand and another hand. How many, how, where at, where did you, where did you get ’em saved at? And so we’ll have four or five, almost every service saying I did this. I led someone, my coworker, my dad, you know, I prayed for the sick.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (16:44):
And so now all of a sudden, the whole congregation’s thinking what who’s doing, what I thought it was, you know, that’s where you just dispel the rumor that the pastor does all the works, right? And so if, if church members look around saying, if she can do this, I can do this. And so this spreads, and, and it’s just a little 32nd, 62nd moment in the church, but it reveals the emphasis we’re placing on true evangelism, every church service. It seems most pastors spend a few minutes talking about tithes and offerings. Isn’t that right? Sure. Give a scripture testimony, talk a little bit, encourage people to give. At least you’d have a time for offering. The question is why do we do that? Well, because we know money is required. It’s important for the local church to continue to isn’t it. Well the people know that’s important, how they know that’s important, cuz we talk about it every week.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (17:50):
If we would just kind of take a step back and think of what’s most important to heaven, even though money’s important, it’s the great commission it’s reaching the whole wide world. And so the most important thing is spreading this gospel and then raising up saints, discipling people. We ought to talk about it all the time. So along with the ties in offering, and that’s really one of the best times to do it, one of the best times to talk about soul winning is while the offering’s being collected every once in a while, stop the offertory song. And while the buckets are getting passed, talk about soul winning, let people share their stories to each other. That’s how fire spreads. You have to let people say and talk and then fire can spread. And so it’s, it’s really the five minute charge or the 62nd charge.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (18:40):
All it is is just a consistent reminder. Every week. Sometimes we do it twice a week. Our midweek service, same thing. We’ll have a time shared stories every once in a while on a Wednesday night, somebody will have a question. You know, I was talking to so and so, and they had, they presented this to me. What am I supposed to say to that? So I’ll get a little teach time in there of, of explaining how to approach questions or hens or sins or naysayers or whatever. But the, the point is that we need to talk. We need to emphasize it somehow, not the whole message. Don’t do a six weeks course that you only do once every five years, then you miss everybody keep this as part of the life of the church. Otherwise the evangelism will, will, will die back down to nothing.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (19:23):
And so, and, and we need evangelists coming through to remind us, there’s a special thing that when evangelist says it, they just fire people up about it. And so we need the evangelist gift in the local church, which I think is a, is a missing element of many churches because we’re thinking, oh, evangelists get people saved. And I know that in my congregation, there’s not so many people and I can give an altar call myself, why do I need the evangelist? You need the evangelist because Jesus said you needed the evangelist and he needs to come through your church to motivate people and remind people of the great commission. So pastors do have some responsibility here and I’d say one more thing to pastors. If pastors, aren’t also being a witness every day, everywhere they go, how are their people gonna follow that? If the pastor’s into music, the people are into music.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (20:08):
If the pastor’s into, you know, Bible study, the people are in the Bible study. If the pastor’s a big prayer, the people are prayers. If the pastor’s a real witness for Jesus, the people will start following the pastor ought to have a story. Every once in a while, one preacher long ago said that if pastors would start winning souls every week, they wouldn’t have to have a book of illustrations every Sunday <laugh> to prepare their message. And so this has to become reality that leading others to Jesus is what Christians do. We are fishers of men. All of us are fishers of men. And the fact is most Christians aren’t fishing very much. Maybe once a year, they’ll find the perfect opportunity to fish and that’s not acceptable. So pastors have to get some of these things ironed out so that we don’t let people become the dead sea.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (20:56):
You can’t just keep, keep pouring into people if they can’t give it out. So, you know, if you don’t have any exit rivers, you just get stale. And so many Christians are unhappy. We found the happiest. Christians are the soul winners we found the most faithful are the soul winners. And that’s what makes it all go around. I think that’s the most exciting thing about it all is that we were all in the same thing together, which is impacting the world for Jesus. One of our visions at the church is that every believer has a vision for worldwide evangelism and personal evangelism. So I’m not negating worldwide evangelism and missions and big crusades and stuff like that. But I also want people to have a personal vision for evangelism. What can I do? And everybody, every single Christian can do this stuff, but we talk about it.
Pastor Chas Stevenson (21:48):
So we get ’em testifying. We have a sole goal of individual witnessing and that’s where we find the biggest success. So we, we see church members slowly but surely over six months, sometimes a year after about a six month period, many people come up to me and say, I finally said something. I said, God bless you at work. And then another six months goes by. And they said, I finally gave a track down. And a little bit later, they said, I finally led someone to Jesus and I couldn’t believe it. It was so easy. I just shared my heart and I cared about ’em and they wanted to receive Jesus. Right? And so it takes time and we don’t pressure people or make people feel guilty or act like they have to go knock on doors or go to the streets. Even though we do have outreaches, we don’t act like that’s the only thing we do. The main thing we do is everybody’s a witness tomorrow after church. I can’t go where you go. So you have to, you have to take care of all the people where you’re at. So that’s the key is giving ’em a vision and a purpose for, for lifestyle evangelism, wherever you are.

Welcome to the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a very special guest evangelist, Sarah NZI. Thank you so much for being with me today.
Sarah Nyanzi (01:12):
Thank you so much for having me. It’s an honor, and I’m excited evangelist.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:17):
Sarah is originally from the nation of Uganda, but now she lives in the UK and Sarah, could you tell me, how did you develop this passion for evangelism that God has given you?
Sarah Nyanzi (01:33):
Honestly, if I’m just to be honest with you, I’ve developed this passion that God has given me. And I would say it’s the gospel. I would say what’s changed. My life is here in the true gospel. I’ve been born again since 2012, you know, I’ve always been in the church. But what really clicked with me was when I heard the true gospel and when I heard the gospel, I remember when I received the fullness of the holy spirit, the first thing I wanted to do was to go out and tell somebody, I didn’t know what an evangelist was then I just thought, yeah, of course I have to tell people about what has happened to me. That was my first response. I remember getting on buses and on the street, I was like, I have to tell people what God has done. So for me, funny enough, it was only until later I realized, oh, that’s, that’s the thing.
Sarah Nyanzi (02:24):
That’s, you know, you that’s a calling. I didn’t know. I thought it was normal. So fell in love with Jesus, got filled with the holy spirit. And since then I’ve had a burning desire to tell other people about Jesus using social media. I’ve been writing for years blogging everywhere that I can, I wanna tell people about this best friend, this, this God that became human, you know, for us. And I think it’s really important for me. I feel like my, my gifting and my calling and my passion is isn’t just to win them, but I want them to come into a relationship, you know, a passionate relationship with Jesus. So that’s where I, I, I, I’m not, I don’t just wanna have a number of souls to win, but I wanna tell them, do you know, there’s a God that wants to talk to you about things in your life that are personal. So I wanna bring you into, I wanna make it more personable to people. So that’s where my passion came from.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:21):
That’s awesome. Now, you and I met in Orlando, Florida, you were a student at the Christ for All Nations Evangelism Bootcamp. What were some of the things that you learned at this intensive bootcamp training for people who have a passion for evangelism?
Sarah Nyanzi (03:42):
Wow. Goodness. There’s so much I can say, but I say I’ll, I think I’ll say the top things. One of the things I learned was again, you, as an evangelist, we have to know the gospel. I mean, we’re gonna share this beautiful thing with people that we preach you. We have to be. So one of the things that the evangelism bootcamp does, and we met so many great teachers like yourself, Daniel is that we really, Daniel Kolenda went into little things about what is the gospel? What is salvation? You know, what all those things. And we, we, it’s almost like he gave us the responsibility of knowing ourselves what these things mean. So that’s that’s, for me, that was the greatest lesson is that I was able to be under a teacher that taught me the gospel and it was a true gospel. So it was good for me because that’s an area that I’m very passionate about. Cause it’s a lot of things out there. So that was the first thing. Another thing that the evangelism.
Sarah Nyanzi (04:43):
Bootcamp taught me is, you know how to consider crusade evangelism. I’ve always had that vision in my heart, but I didn’t know that I could actually do it cause it’s a big task. So what the evangelism bootcamp did for me was to think globally, don’t just try to of quite, of course you can win people. One on one, you can meet, pull in the street and minister them. But how about putting on an event where you can pull in, you know, millions or thousands or hundreds of people at once? So it took the focus away from myself thinking about, oh, I’m gonna be this great evangelist, all of that, the Lord plucked that out. And he gave me the right perspective of why I should become a crusade evangelist. It’s not about me. It’s about Jesus. It’s about him almost. What’s that thing where he it’s like he gets more people all at once. And then the third, the third thing for the Evangel bootcamp that it ingrained in me is serving. I learned how to become a servant. I learned the value, serving someone else’s vision. You know, I’ve been I’ve done the I’ve been on this I guess your oldest might know what the capitalist is, but I’ve done the couples. Yeah. So you
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:52):
Did your, your bootcamp initiation in Tanzania. And then you went back to Tanzania to participate de capitalist, which the word de capitalist means 10 cities. It’s a, it’s from the book of Luke and Daniel Kalinda, the, the leader of Christ, all nations has a vision to do multiple crusades, multiple cities at the same time. And, and so I’ve actually had a privilege of participating in two Tanzania de capitalist events. And one time they did five cities. The next time they did six cities. And then you went back for a big event in Darra Salam, which is the capital of Tanzania’s a huge city, but kind of tell me what that outreach looked like in Dar Salam in doing multiple events across the city at the same time.
Sarah Nyanzi (06:43):
Honestly, that’s, that’s probably where I learned how to serve the most. It changed my life. You really see the background work of putting on a crusade. You see how sea fund does. You know, I, I was under, I was in a a district called, called Kimara micro director was Brady. It was three of us, three of the main CFA people. And, you know, I was, it was a, it’s a big responsibility, but that is where if you wanna become an evangelist, if you wanna be, if you want to be trained in that way, then you can put, then it’s okay to be given, to put yourself in a when you’re like, okay, Lord, you’ve given me this responsibility, so I’m gonna do it. It was life changing. First, first and foremost, the people, the relationships that you form with the locals is incredible because I’ll give you an example.
Sarah Nyanzi (07:30):
You know, I had the volunteer comm, I had different committees basically. And one of them came up to me and they were like, we’ve never seen a young per well, we haven’t seen a young person, you know, at your age, serving God like this. I know that wasn’t me. I know that’s the training. That’s the, the thing that God is doing on the inside of me, that people can see it. So you get to build relationships with churches. People get to look at you, they see you, they watch you, the locals watch you. And even that’s a to money. We saw miracles. You know, one of the, one of the miracles I’ll tell you about is this young boy who hadn’t walked in a long time, stood out from his, from the chair when the evangelist Daniel called Tony, sorry, Dennis called him out of his chair and he was walking and I saw those miracles for myself, you know?
Sarah Nyanzi (08:16):
And then another miracle was a member. I’ll give you just another example is there were two nights where my crusade director told me, I need you to be at the back of the crusade with the volunteers. And I was like, I’m gonna miss out on the crusade, but that’s where the heart comes in. That’s where you develop that heart to serve. And yes, maybe on the sea fund posters and the videos, no one knows Sarah ne, but I know I was there and the Lord knows I was there. So for me, I was part of a, a global evangelist winning campaign. And I can get, I can say to the Lord to the best of my ability I served. And I can say, you know, when those numbers are pronounced, you know, I’m sure even you, Daniel, you can testify to this. I can say I’m a part of that. When I hear 50,000 million or 50,000 people got saved, I can say yes. So even though you’re not, you might not be the main preacher, I guess the best thing I can say to those that are interested in joining the safe fund book campus, you might serve someone for a season, someone else’s vision for a season, but it’s worth it. It’ll teach you a lot for your own ministry.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:22):
What a great perspective on servanthood. Jesus said, I did not come to be served, but to serve. Jesus said the greatest in the kingdom is the servant of all. And so it sounds like you’ve really learned that lesson. Now. You’ve seen God move in Africa, but you live in the UK and mm-hmm <affirmative> has given you a heart to reach people in the United Kingdom for Jesus. And you are currently working on putting together an outreach. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> tell me about that. God has put in your heart for the United Kingdom.
Sarah Nyanzi (10:00):
Yeah. so I’ve had this vision for a long time. I got born again, 2012, and the word that came to me, God said, I’ve given you England for your take for the taking. And I, I didn’t know what that meant because I was still new to the whole preaching thing. So I I’ve thought of, but the word for a long time, it wasn’t until November, December, this year, when the Lord told me to put an, a crusade in the UK to assemble a team, to try, you know, win source for him, no matter how small or big cause that was my biggest concern is Lord, what if I can’t, I’m not well known. He said, do it. So that vision is to win people to Jesus. We want to put an, a crusade potentially as time goes on in, in many cities around the UK, we’re gonna start with London.
Sarah Nyanzi (10:48):
And the goal is to preach the gospel, to bring that, you know, that glory that we see in Africa to share it here, to ministry here, to the people in the UK. We want people to come and experience the glory of God. We want people even Christians to be on fire. So this crusade is not only a soul winning project, a soul winning outreach, but it’s also a place where we desire to ignite the churches, to ignite Christians, the perhaps wanna share the gospel, but haven’t yet gotten that confidence. So I wanna encourage those listening if you live in the UK or if you’re not friends, and you can tell them about this event because it’s gonna be life changing and we’re excited to see what God’s gonna do. And another part of that vision is we’re involving Europeans. So if you are someone who is in the fire camps, for example come to this crusade because we are also holding this crusade for you to experience what it’s like to have a crusade in Europe. So you’re welcome.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:53):
You were born in Africa and then mm-hmm <affirmative> you spent a lot of time there in the UK mm-hmm <affirmative> and the dynamics of preaching to people is very different. Let’s just take a moment to compare and contrast. How do you think that UK is, is different than Africa? What, what do you think is the same? What, how do you think we should adjust our method? Preaching the gospel when working in a, a first world nation versus mm-hmm <affirmative> a developing nation.
Sarah Nyanzi (12:27):
Yeah. So I found that’s a really good question. I found when I was, when I was in Africa. And one of the things I found was, you know, because obviously in the UK, there’s different levels of wealth and different levels of poverty or different levels of even perspective. I think in, in westernized countries like Europe and UK, we do have a lot of things to our disposal. For example, in the, when I get sick, I don’t have to have faith to get medicine or to get healing. I can go to my doctor and we have a national health in health service system where we have medicine for free <laugh>. That’s why we pay really high taxes. So there’s a downside to that. But people, I feel like in the, in the, in our, in, in the UK, you know, there’s other reliances now, if you go to Africa, the, the systems are different.
Sarah Nyanzi (13:23):
So faith for some of them, faith is all they’ve got, you know, that’s all they’ve got. So I don’t wanna sound negative. Say people in Africa have faith and people in the UK don’t know people, but it’s just, the reliance is heavily on the spiritual. And therefore you do see that hunger being fulfilled. Whereas in the UK, people think I don’t need faith. I can go and buy myself something to eat or whatever it’s different in the UK. So I found I was number one the reliance in that hope that we as supposed to place in God, has maybe been placed on other things. And another thing that I found is that spiritually there’s just, people feel like they don’t need, they don’t need God. Whereas in the, in Africa, I haven’t really met anyone when I normally maybe I’m yet to meet that person by in Africa, meet people and they know about God, but I think they just wanna, they’re excited that you mean God has sent you for me.
Sarah Nyanzi (14:23):
I’ll give you an example. We were in the villages, we had a crusade in Tanzania. I was chosen along with a few other people to do a town crusade as part of my initiation, which was great, went into this remote remote village. And I told them, Hey, God has sent me here for you, which is true. They were so like, what? That’s incredible. They was so like, no way. And it was, I even, I felt it, that, that, that innocence, that beautiful thing in the UK people would be like, first of all, who is good, and second and foremost, you’re lying. Like the difference of belief is different. So yeah, I think in the UK, even our communication, the way we communicate has to be different as well. So those are some of the challenge are some of the benefits.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:11):
Well, I pray that people in the UK will have the same faith and belief in God as people in Africa. And I really think that God is sending evangelists like you to the UK that are full of fire full of the holy spirit, that will call people to have a trust and faith in Jesus Christ. And so God’s hand is upon you. And I’m so excited about what you’re doing in the UK and, and, and I’d really encourage you, who are listening. If you are in the United Kingdom get involved in what God is doing on my website below the this episode, I’m gonna put a link to where you can go and to support Sarah. And so I’d encourage you to support her and help her in reaching the United Kingdom for Jesus. Sarah, thank you so much for being a guest on the evangelism podcast. God bless you.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:15):
Jesus said go into all the world and preach the gospel. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be safe. Welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews, full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies, and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host missionary and evangelist Daniel King.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:51):
Hello, this is Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus. Are you called by God to be an evangelist? Do you want to lead million of people to Jesus? Do you desire to be trained in the practical side of building a ministry? I don’t know if you know this, but I have an online school of mass evangelism and I’ve taken all of my teachings, my videos, a lot of my raw writings, even several books that I haven’t even published yet. And I’ve put all this material into an online school, designed to train people who are called to be mass evangelist. You know, there’s several different types of evangelism. You have personal one on, on one evangelism. And I really believe in that. I think every single evangelist should be good at sharing the gospel one-on-one with people, but then there’s some people who are called to preach to masses of people, thousands and thousands of people.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:58):
And there’s not very much training material available for those who are called to mass evangelism. And so in today’s podcast episode, I want to take you behind the scenes into one of the sessions that I have recorded in my school of mass evangelism. By the way, if you wanna enroll in the school, you can find it at Daniel King ministries.com/evangelism, that’s Daniel King ministries.com/evangelism. You can also find links to the school at our ministry website, king ministries.com. And there’s lots of great material in there for anybody who’s called to be an, but on today’s podcast. I’m gonna take you behind the scenes to one of the sessions where I deal with the question, what is an evangelist? And I’m gonna look at the biblical meaning of the evangelist all the different times in the Bible that the evangelist has mentioned. And I’m also going to look at Philip, the evangelist, the only person in the whole Bible, who is specifically called an evangelist, and we’re gonna find out what we can learn from his story. So join me today and let’s find out what is an evangelist?
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:23):
What is an evangelist? The word evangelist actually comes from the Greek word Angus, which comes from the root word Ang Elon, which is the word for gospel ends. So this word Ang Gallion comes from the Greek word onus. And so you might be familiar with the word S we have it in Spanish, and you may have heard of the city of Los Angeles. It comes from that word. Los Angeles means the angels. The word onus means angel or messenger. And so the rule root word of the evangelist is a messenger. Someone who brings a message and the picture in the Greek is of a person who is a runner, and he’s been in a big battle and their side has won a great victory against the in. And so the king calls this runner and says to him, I want you to run back to our home city.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:27):
And I want you to tell the people that are anxiously waiting, the outcome is about, I want you to tell them that we have won a great victory. And so this guy starts running just as fast as he can. He’s he’s running. He is the marathon runner and, and he gets back to their home city and he’s just breathing as hard as can be. And they’re like, what’s what happened? Did we win? Did we lose? You know, are we all gonna die? Are we gonna be taken into slavery? You know what happened? Everyone’s there around him, anxiously waiting. He’s trying to catch his breath. And then he shouts out the good news. He says, Hey, we won the victory.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:03):
And so that is the picture of the evangelist. The evangelist is someone who comes and says, Hey, guess what? The enemy has been defeated. Satan has no more power anymore. We have won the victory. And so that is the picture of the evangelist. And so the word evangelist is mentioned three times in the Bible. I wanna look at these three times that the evangelist has mentioned the first passage, which I know you’re familiar with is Ephesians chapter four, verse 11. And this is the, the verse that talks about the fivefold ministry gifts. It says it was Jesus who gave some to be apostles, some, to be prophets, some, to be evangelists, praise the Lord, and some to be pastors and teachers to prepare God’s people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the son of God and become mature attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:08):
And so you’ll notice here in this passage, you’ve got five ministry gifts. You got the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and the teacher. And, and so the, the evangelistic gift is, is one of the, the fivefold ministry gifts. And of course there are other ministry gifts besides these five, in other parts of Paul’s writings, he talks about the gifts of administration gifts of encouragement, just different gifts that are available. But the evangelist, I think is one of those key gifts that are definitely needed in the body of Christ. And unfortunately, the evangelistic gift right now is weak in the body of Christ. And I don’t know quite why that is, but you know, like back in the forties and fifth, these here in America, we had some really great evangelist that was during the voice of healing movement.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:03):
You had people like, Oral Roberts, like RW Schambach like AA Allen, like William Branham that were traveling around bridge. And they really flowed really strong in the evangelist gift, but it seems like we’ve entered a new period where now probably the strongest gift is the, the role of the pastor, the, the, the pastor of a church. And I think that it’s good that the pastor is strong, but I think that the evangelistic gift also needs to be strong in the body of Christ. The second place where the evangelist is has mentioned is second Timothy chapter four, verse five.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:46):
This is Paul giving advice to a spiritual son, Timothy. He says, but you keep your head in all situations and do her hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. And so here, Paul is giving Timothy advice. He says, do the work of evangelist. Now at this time, Paul was actually a pastor. He was the pastor of the church in Ephesus was, was probably would be considered a megachurch back in those days. Mary mother of Jesus had moved to ESUs. Many of the apostles made their home there. There are probably 20,000 believers in Ephesus and, and Tim was serving as their pastor. And so even though he’s a pastor, Paul specifically tells him do the work of an evangelist. And so this tells me that every single one of the ministry gifts should do the work of an evangelist.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:42):
We found that there is a, the gift or the office of the evangelist, but there’s also something that every single believer is called to do. And we find that command in the great commission, mark 16, 15 says, go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. That command is not just given to a select few it’s given to every disciple of Jesus. How many of your disciples of Jesus? That means that you’re called to do the work of an evangelist. Now, one thing you’re going to discover when we’re down in the nation of Haiti, is that doing the work of an evangelist involves lots of work. Mm-Hmm, <affirmative>, it’s gonna be hot. You’re gonna be sweaty. You’re gonna get tired. We’re, we’re gonna work you as hard as we can, cuz we’re only there for one week and we want to make it hard for people to go to hell from Haiti that week that we’re there.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:32):
Amen. We don’t want a single person in Haiti to go to. And so we’re gonna work you as hard as we possibly can. You’re gonna wake up early, pray hard, work, hard minister, hard, go to bed late, and we’re gonna have a little bit of fun while we’re doing it. And so it’s gonna be great but just just know that it it’s hard work. And so sometimes when people look at the Evangel and think, oh, you know, it’s it, they’re the ones that it up in front of a big crowd. And they preach the people, you know, he preaches for 45 minutes. How hard could that be? But really doing that is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s probably only about 10% of the work. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes of what it means to be an evangelist.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:13):
And, and so all the, that gets the people there, that’s hard work doing all the, the team coordination and all that stuff. That’s hard work. And then probably one of the, the biggest works that the Evangel has to do is to raise money in, in order to do it really honestly, anybody can preach is not hard to preach. What’s hard is paying for the platform that you’re preaching on. And, and so I think that that’s an area that we all need to grow on, grow in is, is raising money and, and getting peop other people involved and having the money in to be able to do the ministry that God has called us to do. And so we’ll be talking about that some more later on today. So Paul tells Timothy to do the work of the evangelist and then in acts chapter 21, verse eight, the last time that an evangelist is mentioned is specifically calling Philip an evangelist X 21 verse eight says leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip, the evangelist, one of seven, he had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:31):
And so of all the people in the Bible only Philip is specifically called and to evangelist. He worked in this ministry as an evangelist. Now the fact that the word for evangelist is only mentioned three times is not meant to demean the office of the evangelist. The title of Bishop is only used three times. Deacon is found twice and amazingly given the current prominence of the position in the body of Christ, the word pastor only occurs one time in the entire Bible. Do you know where it’s found? We just read it a minute ago in Ephesians, the, the that’s the only play is the word pastor has found now that the concept of being a shepherd to people is found in more places, but the word pastors only found once. And so the root word for evangelist is Ang Gallion, which is the Greek word for gospel.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:26):
And this word is actually used 74 times in the new Testament. And then the, the verb form is used in additional 52 times. And so Jesus is actually the first evangelist in the new Testament. Since it says that he went about preaching the good news, the Ang Gallion of the gospel. And so he preached the good news. Therefore he functioned in this office as an evangelist and even the angels went, they proclaimed that Jesus had been born. They proclaimed good news. That was great joy to all the people. And so if that word, good news again is the word Ang Gallion. And even the early church was full of evangelists. And in acts eight four, it says that they preached the word wherever they went. So they went about preaching. God’s word, evangelists are in rare supply, but we need more evangelists. I, I think sometimes the evangelistic gift has been misunderstood in the body of Christ.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:22):
Some people think that the evangelist is just an itinerant preacher, either. You’re a pastor and you got a place where you preach every week, or if you not a pastor, then they call you an evangelist and you to, as you’re, you’re a traveler. And so it is true that the evangelist is called to travel, but not every traveling minister functions in the office, some people they travel and they preach, and their primary focus is on helping people to have healthy marriages. Well, that’s a good message. That’s a good thing to preach. Having a healthy marriage is something the body of Christ needs, but someone who primarily preaches on marriages, isn’t an evangelist. Some people travel and teach on finances and, and teach about seed faith and, and giving and that type of thing. And so a lot of them call themselves evangelists, but they’re not true evangelists.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:13):
The office of the evangelists, the primary focus of the, the office of the evangelist is to get lost people saved. Mm-Hmm <affirmative>, that is the focus of the evangelist. And that should be your focus if, if you’re called to be in evangelist evangelists are not just preachers looking for a meeting sometimes at a pastor’s conference, you know at Ram they’ve got the, the, the great winter Bible seminar. And, and so sometimes, you know, all the pastors come and, and they try to stay away from the evangelists cuz they think the evangelists are just coming and trying to look for, for a meeting. But the true evangelist is not just looking for a meeting. The true evangelist is looking for a lost soul. And then some people have gotten confused about the evangelist because they, they think that any TV, preacher is an evangelist.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:05):
In fact, they call them televangelist. And when you hear the word televangelist, you get this picture of someone with a lick back hair and I got this gold suit on and they said, send me your money, send me your money now. You know? And, and, and so a lot of people go on TV and say, we’re reaching the world, but they’re not really reaching the world. They’re just asking people for money. And unfortunately that’s given a bad name to the evangelist, but I think that it’s time for the evangelist gift to rise back up in the body of Christ. We need more evangelists and, and, and so the evangelist is one who preaches the good news. What is an evangelist? The evangelist leads the loss to Christ. The evangelist, equips equips, the saints for evangelism. The evangelist reaches out to both individuals and multitudes evangelists preach the simple gospel.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:59):
They don’t preach the latest, greatest brand new flavor of the week. Sometimes people are always looking for the brand new message, something that no one’s ever heard before, but really the evangelist focuses on the simple gospel. What gospel it’s that we’re all sinners. Jesus died for our sin, Jesus rose from the dead and everyone who calls on Jesus can be saved from their sin. And that’s very basic. And, and, and there’s a lot of different ways of saying that, but the more simple it is, the easier it is for lost people to understand and to come to Christ. Another sign of the evangelist is signs and wonders. Healing. Miracles. Evangelists are a shining light in the midst of a dark world. They’re like spiritual obstetricians who give birth to new believers. They are the advertising agency of God’s kingdom. The evangelists are like the elite Navy seals who are the first to head into enemy territory.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:56):
They’re like shock troops on the front lines of the battle for lost souls. They are farmers who are focused on plowing ground sewing seeds and reaping a harvest. And so if you can imagine the, the battles that the United States has fought like for example we invaded Iraq in the, the first Gulf war. The Navy seals went in under cover of night. They were the first ones to land and they had specific missions to fulfill. They, they had to go in, blow up certain things, attack certain areas get, take over some of the radar sites. I mean they, and they snuck in and, and they were the first, they were the elite they’d been trained. And so that is the job of the evangelist. The evangelist doesn’t sit around where it’s comfortable. The evangelist is often the first one to go into an area before the apostle, before the pastor, before there’s any churches there, the evangelist is the one who goes in and, and makes an impact before anybody else can come.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:01):
And, and he’s like the, he opens the door for the gospel to start breaking forth in an area. I all right. Let’s look at the office of the evangelist in the new Testament. And so the only person in the new Testament who specifically called an evangelist is Philip. And so let’s look at the life of Philip. The first time he’s mentioned is in acts chapter six versus is one through seven. It says in those days when the number of disciples was increasing the Greason Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the 12 gathered all the disciples together and said it would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables, brothers choose seven men from amongst you who are known to be full of the spirit and wisdom.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:55):
We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word, this proposal, please, the whole group. They chose Steven, a man full of faith and of the holy spirit, also Philip, and then six other people or five other people. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the apostles, the, the 11 apostles plus the replacement for Judas, the 12 apostles, they were so busy preaching the word that they’re also trying to feed all the widows, feed all the people, the hungry. And so apparently one group of widows wasn’t getting the food they should have been getting. And the apostles they decided, you know, we need to be focused on studying God’s word, preaching, God’s word. And they said, we need some people that would be willing to serve.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:48):
And so they looked around and found people that were full of holy spirit that were willing, that were full of wisdom. And so Philip met all of these requirements. Philip was full of the holy spirit. He was full of wisdom and he was willing to be used by God and noticed that his ministry started with him being a servant. He, he just found a plea place to serve, just bringing food to the widows. And I think this is where a lot of ministries get started. In fact, every healthy ministry, this is where they get started. And I think it’s very important to continually keep that heart of a servant throughout ministry and, and be willing to do whatever it takes to get the, a job done. A lot of people wanna be, you know, the, the big man on stage, but really God is looking for people who are willing to reach out to the cripple who are willing to help serve the food, willing to clean the toilets.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (20:49):
And God’s looking for that type of person. Apparently Philip was that type of person. So that’s where his ministry got started. And then the next time we see Philip at work is in acts chapter eight. Verse one on that day, a great persecution broke out against the church at Jeru and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. So acts one eight, Jesus gave the promise, but you shall receive power after the holy spirit comes upon you and you shall be witnesses onto me and Jerusalem Juda Samaria into the uttermost ends of the earth. So Jesus gave them the specific command and acts one eight, and it takes all, all the way until acts eight, chapter one chapter eight, verse one for that command to start to be fulfilled up until acts chapter eight. All of the disciples are in Jerusalem.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:39):
Everybody that’s getting saved is in Jerusalem. They stand in Jerusalem, but suddenly this great persecution breaks out and people begin to scatter all, all over. So they go to Judea, they go to Samaria and then eventually we’ll see that they end up at the uttermost ends of the earth. And so godly men buried Stephen and mourn deeply for him. You remember that he was, he was stoned, but Saul began to destroy the church going from house to house. He dragged off men and women and put them in prison. Then verse four, those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs, he did, they all paid close attention to what he said with shrieks evil spirits came outta many in many paralytics and cripples were healed.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (22:29):
So there was great joy in that city. So it says that Philip went down to Samaria. Samaria was full of Samaritans, who didn’t really get along with Jews now in John chapter four, Jesus ministered to the Samaritan woman and the whole village there got saved and, and, and were excited about Jesus. And so apparently there were some that heard about Jesus, but Jesus had given the command go to Samaria. Well, no one had gone until Philip went there. And so Philip goes down. He starts preaching among the Samaritans and look at what he did. He proclaimed crime there. And so the work of the evangelist is to proclaim Christ, to preach Jesus. That is the primary message of the evangelist. There’s many different things that people can preach on. You can preach on faith. You can preach on marriage. You can preach on finances.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (23:26):
You can preach on seven reasons why Jesus is coming soon, you know, but really the, the, the focus of the evangelist is preaching Christ. Jesus said, if I be lifted up, I will draw all man onto me. And so it says that when the crowns heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs, he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. And so here we have two different characteristics of the evangelistic ministry. First of all, is multitudes. And second is miracles. And so I believe anytime someone is operating in an Evangel, you’re gonna see multitudes and you’re gonna see miracles. And so I’m believing that we’re gonna see both when we’re in the nation of Haiti, we’re gonna see multitudes of people coming, and we’re gonna see great miracles. And it’s because there’s a specific anointing on the evangelist to do that to see miracles happen.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (24:25):
I think that God uses miracles in order to draw people to, to hear the good news. Marilyn Hickey told me that miracles are the dinner bell that draw people to the banqueting table of heaven. And then notice, it says with shrieks, evil spirits came outta many, many paralytics and cripples were healed. And, and so the evangelistic gift is also given to confront demonic powers. And so he counts demons, outta many people. And then it says there was great joy in that city. And, and so this is another characteristic of the evangelistic. Many industry is it brings great joy. We were in the nation of India doing a big evangelistic event. And we were out in this rural area where there are lots of farmers and many of the farmers were extremely poor. They didn’t have anything. And I read that many of these farmers, they would go into debt in order to buy sea eat and they plant their seed.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (25:28):
And then if there was any problem with the harvest, if it rained too early, or it didn’t rain at all, or if rats came and ate their harvest they wouldn’t have money to pay back the debt. And, and so the, they would be hounded by these, these debt collectors who would come and, and, and say, Hey, you gotta pay back their debt. And so a bunch of these farmers were committing suicide because they couldn’t pay back their debt. In fact, in, in that area, like over 2000 people had committed suicide over the last 10 year period. And, and so when we came the first night we started preaching and the people just sat there and stared at us like a, a cow looking at a new gate. I mean, he’s just looking at, I mean, they didn’t break a smile. They didn’t clap with us during the songs.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (26:16):
They didn’t sing. Like there were no miracles the first night nothing happened. And so second night, same thing, third night, same thing. Like, I would pray for the, and say, please come and tell me what Jesus has done for you. And, and no one would come and, and I’d preach again and pray again, and nothing was happening. And, and so finally by the third night, one guy came up, he says I was sitting way in the back and I was blind. And on the first night I, I saw a light and, and then I was able to see, and he says, and, and so I didn’t want to come up on the first. I wanna see whether it was really real. So he says, I waited two nights to see whether my miracle was real, but I, I wanna tell everyone now that I can see Jesus says, heal me.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (27:02):
I’m like, why don’t you come up the first night would, it really helped, helped me out. I was feeling lonely up there. And, and so this guy comes up and, and gives his testimony. And then another person comes up and gives her, and then another person and another person. And so by the, the final night, the fifth night of the crusade we had great joy that filled that place through a mirror, uncles taking place all over the place like popcorn, just God was touching people and, and the people got up and they started to celebrate. They started to dance. We were singing songs. Everyone was clapping. They were laughing. And it was the joy of the Lord that filled that place. And so it was just like in the book of acts, it says, great joy filled the city and are gonna see that in the nation of Haiti, we’re gonna see the city filled with great joy, hallelujah, verse nine.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (27:52):
It says now for some time a man named Simon had practiced Sourcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samara. He boasted that he was someone great. And all the people both high and low gave him their attention explained this man is the power. No one as the great power, they followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. But when they believed Philip, as he preached the good news, the kingdom of God, in the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized both men and women, Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. And so there is real miracles and there’s counterfeit miracles. And, and in the nation of Haiti voodoo is one of the primary religions. Some of the people are Christians. Some of the people practice a form of voodoo.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (28:40):
Some people combine Christianity and voodoo and, and counter practice both. But last time that we were there, we set up a big barrel and we invited all the people to bring all their voodoo idols and fetishes and different things that they used to worship. And they threw ’em into the barrels. And then we lit them on fire and, and, and burned all of those things up. And so you kind of see this happening with this sun, him in the sourcer, same thing where he’s amazed at the mayor and says, Hey, I want this. And so he goes, he believes he’s baptized. And when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them. And they, that they might receive the holy spirit because the holy spirit had not yet come upon.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (29:23):
Any of them, they’d simply been baptized in the name of the Lord, Jesus, then Peter and John placed their hands on them. And they received the holy spirit. And so I think this is a real important point. After Philip went, there, began to preach. He was the evangelist. He was breaking the ground up. Then when God began to move, the apostles came from Jerusalem. And so Peter and John come and, and began praying for people to be filled with a holy spirit. And so one of the number one questions that evangelist get I’ve, I’ve heard it a million times is what do you do about follow up? And it’s always very question, well, what do you do about follow? You, get all these people saved and then you leave. And what do you do about follow? Well, I think that the biblical model is right here, that the, the evangelist goes, he preaches the gospel, multitudes miracles, people get saved, but he works in teamwork with other giftings in the body of Christ.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (30:22):
And so along behind the evangelist comes the prophet, the pastor, the teacher, the apostle, these other evangelist gifts to help in discipling the people. And so I always do everything I possibly can to do about, to do follow up. I mean, we don’t want any spiritual abortions, people to that get saved and then follow away. We wanna follow up on them. But it’s not something that the evangelist is called to do alone. It is for every ministry gift to, to be involved in, in the follow up of the new believers. And so that’s why in Haiti, we’re gonna work very closely with the local believers. We’re gonna be doing training for the local pastors be because we wanted ha something in them that helps with following up on the people that that get say. And, and so we’re not in this by ourselves, we’re working with other churches, other pastors, as many people as we can in Haiti, we’ve invited all the pastors of Porter princes to come together for our pastors training seminar.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (31:23):
And so I believe that they are the ones that are primarily responsible for the, the follow up of the new believers verse 18. When Simon saw that the spirit was given at the length on of the apostles hands, he offered them money and said, give me also this abilities that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the holy spirit. Peter answered may your money perish with you because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money. You have no partner share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God repent of this willingness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. If I see that you’re full of bitterness and captive to sin, then Simon answered pray to the Lord for me. So that nothing you have said may happen to me when testified in proclaim the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (32:10):
And so we see that because of what Philip went, did that now the gospel can spread to that entire region and all the Samaritan villages hear the good news. And so it’s very interesting that this source or Simon tries to buy the gift of God with money and with the focus of some ministers on money. I think that today there would be some ministers that would take it, say, yeah, give me a, gimme a thousand dollars and I’ll lay hands on. You I’ll pray for you. But Peter and John, they shut it down immediately. They say, you know, and they’re, they’re disgusted with him and say, you have no part or share in this ministry because your heart’s not right before God. And so the evangelist is not motivated by money. He’s motivated by souls. He’s motivated going after people and in rescuing people from hell, then verse 26.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:02):
Now an angel, the Lord said to Philip, go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he started out and on his way, he met an Ethiopian Munich, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem, the worship, and on his way, home was sitting in his chariot, reading the book of Isaiah, the prophet, the spirit told Philip go to that chariot and stay near it. And so in the thinking of this time, Ethiopia was on the ends of the earth. It was the very edge here in this chapter. We, we see the fulfillment of the act chapter one, verse eight. First, the gospel goes from Jerusalem into Judea, then onto Samaria. And now it’s going to an Ethiopian Munich, the uttermost ends of the earth.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:57):
And so the writer of the book of acts, which is Luke, he puts it here specifically to show the fulfillment of this prophecy that Jesus gave in acts one eight. And so this Ethiopian unit, he goes to the temple or to Jerusalem to worship. And so history tells us that the queen of Sheba, you remember the story came to meet Solomon. And she went back. And when she went back, she took some Jews with her back to Ethiopia. And, and so apparently there were still people there still Jews that worshiped yawe the, the God of Israel. And so he came to worship, but when he came to the temple, there was a problem because in Leviticus, it tells us, first of all, that no foreigner is, is allowed to worship in the temple. And second in Leviticus, it tells us that no one who is MAED is allowed to worship in the temple.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:52):
And so this man is a UNIC and he is MAED, he’s got this serious injury. And so because of this, he has to stand outside the temple area. He came all the way Jerusalem, but you can tell he’s very curious. And, and he, he, he buys the book of Isaiah, which back then would’ve been the equivalent of two or three years wages. I mean, so, you know, you can imagine spending a huge amount, be like buying a book for 50, 60, $70,000. He’s spending on, on this book of Isaiah and he’s in his cherry driving back home. And he’s curious. And so he’s reading, he wants to know everything he can about God. And so God specifically gives Philip the evangelist, an instruction, go down to the desert road. Now here, Philip is he’s ministering in Samaria and there’s multitudes of people getting saved. And suddenly God speaks to him and says, go down to the desert road.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:46):
Now, this is a very surprising instruction to give to someone who’s ministering to the multitudes, because you know, Philip’s thinking, God, the desert, there’s not many people that go on the desert road. It’s hot out there. There’s why, why am I going down to the desert road? You know, I’m here. I have a ministry right here. I mean, surely it would be better for me to stay here in this area, ministering to these multitudes and go, but the evangelist is called to the multitudes, but then also the evangelist is called to individuals. And so you’ll see someone who operates in the evangelistic gift operating in both of these arenas. Sometimes they will minister to multitudes of people, but then they should equally be willing to minister one on one to people when God gives them the instruction to do that. And so I would say that if you’re not willing to minister to the one, then God will never put you on the platform ministering to thousands.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:44):
And if you’re on the platform ministering to thousands, but you’re not willing to minister to the one, you, you really shouldn’t be up there. And so the important thing is to be obedient to God. Amen. So verse 30 Philip ran up to the cherry and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. Do you understand what you’re reading? Philip asked? How can I, he said, unless someone explains it to me. So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. The UN was reading the passage of scripture. He was like a sheep to the slaughter and his land before the sheer silent. So he did not open his mouth and his humiliation. He was deprived of justice who can speak of his descendants for his life was taken from the earth. The unit ask Philip, tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about himself or someone else.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (37:23):
Then Philip began with that very passage of scripture and told him that good news about Jesus. And so here, once again, we see the evangelist sharing the message of Jesus Christ. And so he starts writing that passage of scripture. And so I, it doesn’t matter where an evangelist starts, his message. He’s gonna end up talking about Jesus, even if an evangelist gets up and is preaching about marriage or, or something like that, the true evangelist will bring it all back to Jesus and talk about Jesus. And so that’s the primary message of the evangelist. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the UN said, look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized? And so suddenly this Munich has this revelation. He’s hearing about Jesus and see in the old covenant, he was a foreigner and he was MAED. He wasn’t allowed to worship, but under the new covenant, none of that matters anymore.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (38:22):
And so he sees the water and he says, why shouldn’t I be baptized? Is anything stopping me from being baptized? And Phillip says, no. And so immediately he gives orders to stop the chair. The both Phillip and the unit went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away and the unit did not see him again, but went on his way, rejoicing. And so earlier we see the city of Samaria, rejoicing, great joy, Philip, the city. And now when the individual get saved, we see the individual rejoicing, Philip, however, appeared at AOSIS and traveled about preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea in Caesarea is where we see him later in acts chapter 21 and he’s ministering there. And so the evangelist he comes in he obeys God.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (39:17):
He ministers to the Ethiopian unit and then Philip disappears. The spirit catches him away. We call this Philip flying, he fly and I keep asking God and say, God, I spend so much money on airlines. Why don’t you just take me to where I’m supposed to preach <laugh> but he appears it in, in another town. He immediately starts preaching in the hospital there. And he appears in a town that’s about 40 miles from the desert road where he was, he was ministering here to the Ethiopian unit. And, and so a lot of people have criticized the evangelists. They say, the evangelist just blows him, blows up. It blows out. But that’s essentially what Philip does here. That model is biblical. The evangelist here, he, he comes, he ministers and then immediately the spirit catches him away and he goes to another place. And, and, and so I think the evangelist is, is, is a special ambassador for the kingdom of Ghana.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (40:10):
He goes into a place ministers and then the next week he’s somewhere else ministering. And so God sends the evangelist different places to, to right where he’s needed. And the amazing thing is, is that the Ethiopian unit, he goes back to Ethiopia and he was a significant official, he was the treasurer of all the treasury. And so he had a lot of influence there. He began telling people about Jesus and now Ethiopia historically is a Christian nation. And there are millions of people who are Christians today in Ethiopia because of this Ethiopian unit. And so if you can reach this one person, Phil, the Evangel reach this one person, and because of him, the entire nation of Ethiopia got saved. And so there you have a, of the evangelistic ministry. And one more thing I’d like to point out in acts 21. It says that he had four daughters, they were all virgins and they all prophesy.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (41:08):
And so the evangelist he takes good care of his family. He doesn’t abandon them. He takes good care of his family. They’re virgins, which means they’re not running around sleeping with every guy that comes come, you know, they’re the virgins. And they prophesy. They, they work with their father in the ministry. And so I’m a big believer that God does not just call individuals. He calls families and the, the anointing that is on one member of the family comes upon every member of that family. And so I think this is very important in, in your marriage that you don’t do it alone, but that your spouse is right there with you. My, my wife and I we minister together and we love ministering together. And now we have two kids. We got three year old boy, Caleb, and a one year old girl, Katie grace, and, and you know, I want them to be amazing ministers and, and just like the four daughters of Philip to that prophesy. All right, let’s pray dearly father. I thank you for the, the gift of the evangelist for the body of Christ. Lord, I pray that each person here who’s called to be an evangelist would begin walking in the fullness of that gift. And, and father, I pray that even those that aren’t called to be an evangelist would begin to do the work of an evangelist and that they would see many people get saved through them in Jesus name. I pray amen.
