Today I was doing my devotions and I was thinking about different ways of communicating the Gospel. Throughout Scripture, God uses different illustrations and metaphors to help us understand the “good news.” Below are twenty metaphors that will help you understand the reality of your salvation.
A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes one thing by comparing it to something else. Metaphors help people understand unfamiliar or complicated ideas by connecting them to something they already know.
Jesus frequently used metaphors to explain spiritual truths. For example, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus was comparing Himself to light because, just as physical light helps people see in darkness, Jesus brings spiritual light to people who are lost in sin.
Jesus also said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Just as bread provides nourishment for our physical bodies, Jesus provides spiritual nourishment for our souls.
Metaphors are powerful tools for preaching the Gospel because they make spiritual truths easier to understand, remember, and apply. By using familiar pictures from everyday life, an evangelist can communicate profound biblical truths in a simple and memorable way.
Each metaphor emphasizes a different aspect of the same salvation:
We were dead; Jesus gives us life.
We were immature; Jesus helps us grow.
We were sick; Jesus heals us.
We were orphans; Jesus brings us into God’s family.
We were enemies; Jesus makes us friends.
We were perishing; Jesus rescues us.
We were slaves; Jesus sets us free.
We were in debt; Jesus pays the price.
We were guilty; Jesus forgives us.
We were at war; Jesus brings peace.
We were foreigners; Jesus makes us citizens.
We were blind; Jesus opens our eyes.
We were ignorant; Jesus gives us knowledge.
We were deceived; Jesus reveals the truth.
We were lost; Jesus finds us.
We were stumbling; Jesus shows us the way.
We were in darkness; Jesus brings us into the light.
We were unclean; Jesus makes us pure.
We were unfruitful; Jesus makes us fruitful.
We were part of the old creation; Jesus makes us new.
The central message of all 20 metaphors is this: Sin creates a problem that humanity cannot solve, but Jesus Christ is God’s answer to every dimension of our need for salvation.
