Outreach to the First Nations people of Garden Hill, Manitoba
Sometimes an evangelist is called to reach tens of thousands of people for Jesus. Other times we are called to share the Gospel one-on-one.
During the King family’s recent Canadian outreach to the Garden Hill First Nation in northern Manitoba, we ministered to dozens of people, not thousands. But all the angels of heaven still rejoiced for every single individual who got saved.
Jesus Impacts First Nation of Canada
What would make our family travel thousands of miles to reach one of the most remote communities in Canada?
One word: Jesus.
Garden Hill is so remote that in the winter you can drive there on a temporary ice road, but in the summer, the lakes melt and the only way in is by airplane or boat. When we finally arrived, we were welcomed by the leaders of this indigenous community.
Visiting this remote area reminded me that God loves every tribe, every nation, and every language. The people of Garden Hill speak Oji-Cree, and the Bible tells us in Revelation 7:9 that one day there will be a great multitude in heaven “from every nation, tribe, people and language” worshiping before the throne of God. I believe the people who speak Oji-Cree will be part of that heavenly celebration!
Poverty and Death Come from the Devil
Our family stood in front of the single grocery store in the town of Garden Hill to pray for people. We were surprised by the cost of food. A single can of cola cost $3.30. A bunch of bananas was $15. Fresh produce, dairy, and meat cost a lot because food must be flown in.
Poverty is pervasive in Garden Hill. The dirt roads are rough on cars. Almost every yard contained broken-down cars and appliances. One of the biggest problems in the community is meth addiction. It causes a lot of death.
Death and sickness are on everyone’s mind in Garden Hill. When someone gets sick, a helicopter at the nurse’s station takes them across a lake to the closest airport. From there, they are flown to a hospital in Winnipeg far away. Several people told me that once a relative got sick, they often never see them again because they die in the hospital.
Meeting Jesus is an Encounter with Life
At the revival meeting, I preached on the story of when Jesus entered the city of Nain with His disciples and met a funeral procession coming out of the city. A widow was burying her only son who had died. This mother was wailing in grief. This is a perfect picture of what Satan comes to do. The Bible says in John 10:10, “The thief comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy.” But, Jesus said, “I have come to give life and life more abundantly.”
Jesus was going IN the city. The funeral was going OUT of the city. What happens when death meets life? “When the Lord saw the mother, His heart went out to her and He said, “Don’t cry.” Then He went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother” (Luke 7:12-15). The life of Jesus is greater than the power of death.
I preached, “The man was going out of the city to the graveyard, but Jesus turned everything around. Jesus will turn your life around. This is what the Biblical word “repent” means. To repent means “to turn around.” When you meet Jesus, your entire life gets turned around. The dead man was being carried out, but Jesus was coming in. The Bible says that those who are without Christ are dead in sin. But, Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins, and now if you repent from your sin you become alive in Christ (Romans 6:11). Jesus takes that which is dead and gives it new life.”
You Helped Us Make a Difference
As we looked around the community of Garden Hill, we saw many needs. Poverty…meth addiction …sickness…and death have attacked the community. But darkness is never greater than the power of Jesus!
As our family ministered in Garden Hill, people gave their lives to Jesus; we prayed for the sick, and God moved in a powerful way.

Outreach to the First Nations people of La Loche, Canada
In the year before we took a team to La Loche, almost fifty people committed suicide over the course of one year (averaging almost one per week). In the video, you can see how we prayed against the spirit of suicide in La Loche. One year after our visit we received a miracle report that not one person had committed suicide that year! Jesus made a big difference in this community!
