An Interview with Daniel King on The Power of a Meal | Adnan Maqsood

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood is from the nation of Pakistan, and he is the founder of Vision Television Network. Recently, he interviewed me about my brand new book, The Power of a Meal. And I thought you would be interested in hearing this interview because it has some really important insights on how we can use mealtime as an evangelistic tool to lead people to Jesus. He is a worldwide evangelist and been in 70 nations, maybe more than 70 nations because I think it’s dependent when you’re talking. But this man preached to the large crowds and small crowds and all, and written so many books and many books, and also powerful, influential men of God. I want to say thank you to him for coming on this broadcast. Thank you so much, Dr. Daniel, for joining me today.

Evangelist Daniel King (01:47):
Hey, it is a wonderful privilege to be on with you. Thank you for having me.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (01:52):
Absolutely. Look, you’ve been doing television or radios, 15, 16, 20 years old. I feel like I was just getting started back then and you were having debates and all that stuff. Not to make you old, but make you younger, man. You had so many years behind you doing the work of the Lord and doing it with excellence. But I want to dive right into very first question. You receive a call to ministry at a very young age, which is there is a similarity between us, and grew up on a mission field in Mexico. How did those days or early experiences shape your mission and passion for evangelism and reaching the nations?

Evangelist Daniel King (02:31):
Yeah. I was called by God to be an evangelist when I was only five years old. And I didn’t waste any time. I started preaching at the age of six. And one of the things I said at the age of six is, if you are saved, stay saved. If you’re not saved, you need to get saved. And so even at a very young age, I had an evangelistic fervor in my message. And then when I was 10 years old, my parents became missionaries in the country of Mexico. And since they were my legal guardians, I had to go with them. And so we worked for 20 years ministering to the children of Mexico. But my heroes were always people like Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, T.L. Osborne, Reinhard Bonke. And I dreamed of preaching to mass crowds of people. And so at the age of 15, I was reading a book about how to be successful in life.

(03:25):
And it said, you need to write down your goals. And one of the goals they said would be good for young people is to try to become a millionaire by the age of 30. But I realized because of my upbringing as a missionary in Mexico, that money was not what was important to me, but what was important was souls. And so I wrote down, I, Daniel King, want to lead one million people to Jesus before I turn 30 years of age. Instead of trying to become a money millionaire, I wanted to become a soul millionaire, to lead a million heirs into the kingdom of God. And so God started opening up doors in different nations. And before I turned 30 years of age, we had completed that goal of leading over a million people to Jesus. And then I was praying to say, God, what comes next?

(04:08):
And I felt like God say, go for a million souls every single year. So in the natural, that may seem impossible, but with God, all things are possible. Absolutely. That is fantastic. And I was checking on, you’re very active with media and social media and television world. You got 358,000 subscriber on YouTube. Is that correct? Yeah, that’s your channel. Yeah.

Evangelist Daniel King (04:47):
Let’s talk about that for a second because one year ago, I only had 3,000 subscribers to my YouTube channel. And you can find it by typing Evangelist Daniel King into YouTube and it’ll pull me right up. But I realized that we need to reach this generation. And if you talk to young people, usually a group of 10 young people, all 10 of them will be looking at their cell phone and ignoring one another. So if we want to go into their world, we have to go into social media. And so last year I said, “What can we do to reach these young people?” So I started recording three YouTube shorts every single day, preaching the gospel 60 seconds at a time and putting it up there and feeding the YouTube algorithm. And so it started pushing it out to people. And in one year, we grew from 3,000 subscribers to over 360,000 subscribers.

(05:45):
And every single video that I put out points people to a long form video that explains how to be saved. And we’ve had so many testimonies of people, they write in the comments and say, “I prayed that prayer with you or I just gave my life to Jesus. Thank you so much for sharing the good news.” And so we’re always just looking for any way that we possibly can to tell people about Jesus, whether it’s from a platform in front of a mass crowd, one-on-one evangelism, or using social media to talk about Jesus.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (06:17):
Absolutely. Very fantastic. Good strategy. Look, you preached the gospel before masses, massive crowds around the world. Yet the power of a meal, which is your book, Turning the Direction Towards, focuses on something incredibly personal, simply sitting down and eating with someone. What inspired you to write this book?

Evangelist Daniel King (06:42):
Yeah. This book, The Power of a Meal is hot off the press. I just got it in my hand for the first time last month. And it talks about how every believer can use meals as a way to share the gospel with people. And so I’m an evangelist. Part of the calling of an evangelist, of course, is to preach the gospel, but then the evangelist is also called to equip the body of Christ to do evangelism. And so it’s the evangelist that stirs people up to share their faith. And in the early years of my ministry, I was thinking, “Okay, I can turn other people into platform evangelists.” And so I tell people like, “Hey, why don’t you learn how to preach the gospel from a platform?” And I quickly found out that one of the number one fears that people have is of speaking in front of a big crowd of people.

(07:40):
And it’s actually the phobia of speaking to big crowds of people is greater than the phobia of death. So people would rather die than get up in front of a bunch of people. So then I said, “Okay, well, maybe you can’t preach to a big crowd, but why don’t you just take this megaphone out on the street corner and you can just preach to a small crowd of people there?” And people were like, “I don’t really feel comfortable doing it.” So I started thinking like, “How can I empower the body of Christ to share their faith with others?” And one day I was praying and I realized one of the things that everyone likes to do is to eat. Everyone loves eating and they love talking to people as they eat. So what if we could use the dinner table as a platform for sharing the gospel?

(08:25):
And so I began to study the power of a meal. And I found that actually meals are a very big part of how God has related to his people throughout history. In fact, one of the first things that God did was give the entire garden with all the fruit to eat to Adam and Eve, the first man and the first woman. But then of course, Adam and Eve, they went and took one forbidden fruit that God forbid. And so the very first sin involved a meal. And because of sin, we are all put into slavery and bondage. And the children of Israel were in slavery in Egypt. And then God sent Moses the deliverer to set them free. And on the night that they were freed from Egypt, God gave them a special meal called the Passover Meal. And every element of the Passover had special meaning to them.

(09:27):
And it reminded them of how God had set them free from slavery in Egypt. And then Jesus actually used meals so much in his ministry. Now, three times the Bible says the Son of Man came. So first of all, it says the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. That was the purpose for which Jesus came. And then it says, “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.” And so that reveals Jesus’ heart attitude. But then it says, “The Son of Man came eating and drinking.” And that was the method that Jesus used to reach people. In fact, Jesus, he ate and drank so much that he was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. And so he would go and eat with the worst of the worst. And if you start looking through the book of Luke, two thirds of the book of Luke, Jesus is either at a meal or he is going to a meal or he is coming from a meal.

(10:40):
And so all throughout the book of Luke, Jesus is having meals with people. And so in Luke chapter five, you have the story of Levi, the tax collector. And Levi, he’s also known by his name, Matthew. He was the one who wrote the very first gospel. And he was a tax collector. Jesus went to his house. He gathered up all of his tax collector friends and Jesus ate a meal together with them. And then in Luke chapter seven, Jesus is at a meal and a sinful woman comes in and washes his feet. In Luke chapter nine, Jesus multiplies the loaves and fishes so that 5,000 men plus women and children can eat. Luke chapter 10, Jesus eats at the house of Mary and Martha. Luke chapter 11. Jesus is at a meal when he condemns the Pharisees. Luke chapter 15, Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son.

(11:35):
And when he comes home to his father, the first thing the father does is he throws a big feast to celebrate his son. And then in Luke chapter 19, you have the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. And Jesus goes over to the house of Zacchaeus. And then of course, Luke chapter 22, you have the story of the last supper. The last thing that Jesus wanted to do with his friends before he went to the cross was to have a meal with them. And then in Luke chapter 24, you have the story of Jesus on the road to Emmaus. And his friends, they don’t recognize him until the moment he breaks bread and they say, “Oh, you’re the guy that we like to eat with.” And so Jesus used meals to reach people and we can use meals to tell people about Jesus. And that’s what I talk about in my book, The Power of a Meal.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (12:44):
Absolutely. That’s fantastic. I want to ask these questions to you. Jesus frequently, as you’re mentioning and given so many Bible verses, connected to Jesus having a meal with people, but Jesus frequently used meals as an opportunity for relationship and ministry. What can the modern church learn from the way Jesus connected with people around the table?

Evangelist Daniel King (13:06):
Yeah. Remember the Passover meal. They had special bread that they were given. And then at communion, Jesus took the bread and he said, “This is my body.” And then he took it and he broke the bread and gave it to his disciple. He says, “When you eat,” he says, “Remember me.” And then Jesus took the bottle of wine and he says, “This is my blood.” And so when we eat together, we can remember what Jesus accomplished at the cross. And we can reach out to people and invite them for a meal. It’s so simple to invite someone to come and have coffee with you. You can say, “Come over to my house. I want to give you a meal or invite them out to a restaurant to eat together.” Because when you’re eating together, walls go down. You have the opportunity to listen to one another.

(14:10):
And then it presents the opportunity to begin to minister to people. And you say, “What do you need prayer for? What’s going on in your life? Can I pray for your children? Can I pray for your marriage?” And as we begin to eat with people, friendships are formed. And once we have a friendship with someone, then we’ve earned the right to begin to speak into their life and to share the gospel. And so a meal actually could be one of the most powerful tools that the body of Christ can use in order to reach people for Jesus. And so you may never speak on a big platform to thousands of people like I do and like you do as well. And I just saw a video of you preaching in Pakistan to a huge crowd of thousands of people. But not everyone who’s listening will ever do that.

(15:01):
But I guarantee you’re listening right now. You like to eat and there’s someone that you can invite out for a cup of coffee or invite over to your house for a meal and then use that meal as an opportunity to pray for them, to minister to them and to help introduce them to Jesus.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (15:21):
Absolutely. Brother Daniel, you brought something very important. I mean, people used to do that in the past or some people would say Southern hospitality, right? It doesn’t have to be a Southern hospitality to bring somebody over to eat or share a cup of coffee with them. But I think we should incorporate that in our daily life, regardless if it’s south or north or all over the world. I mean, Pakistan used to be very common too. What are you talking about? But I want to encourage people to get the power of the meal, right? Or of a meal, the book. And I want to ask you next questions. Many Christians generally wants to share Jesus, but feel intimidated by evangelism. How can inviting someone to a meal remove some of those barriers and make or sharing our faithful and wonderful relationship with them built?

Evangelist Daniel King (16:14):
Yeah. The first half of this book talks about how God uses meals throughout scripture to impact lives. But then the second half of the book provides a blueprint to help you think through the process of actually sharing your faith at a meal. And so I actually have seven steps in this book. It begins with preparation and then invitation and then a time of connection, conversation, illumination where you turn the things towards the things of the spirit. And then you have transformation. Then after someone comes to Jesus, of course, you have celebration. And so you can find all those steps in the book. But basically you want to come to a meal ready to listen and to ask questions. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. And as you listen and you’re sitting across from someone saying, “What’s going on in your life?

(17:15):
What do you need prayer for?” It allows people’s hearts to become soft. And when their hearts become soft, they open up to the things of God. And somewhere between the main course in dessert, you can have the opportunity to say, “Come on, let me pray for you. What do you need prayer for?” And then to grab them by the hand and say, “I want to make real sure you’re going to heaven with me.” The Bible says that all have sinned. The price for sin is death, but Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. And the Bible says that Jesus rose from the dead and everyone who calls on Jesus will be saved. Would you like to call on Jesus right now and make sure that you’re going to heaven? Ask Jesus to forgive you. Ask Jesus to give you a brand new start.

(18:01):
Could we pray together? Just take me by the hand and let’s say these words together and lead them in a simple salvation prayer. And by doing that, you can introduce people into the kingdom of God.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (18:18):
Fantastic. I want to talk about, you mentioned this seven steps, right? Yeah. I want to just say it out because I feel like before I asked the question, you said it, but I want to now do this for the sake of time. So in your book, you outlined seven steps, preparation, invitation, connection, conversation, illustration, transformation, and celebration. A lot of rations right there. How can these principles turn ordinary meal into an opportunity as you were talking about having somebody encounter Jesus on a very personal level?

Evangelist Daniel King (18:59):
I think it’s about being very intentional about sharing your faith. Jesus gave us the mandate called the Great Commission to go into all the world and to preach the gospel to every creature. That’s Mark 16:15. To go and make disciples of all nations. That’s Matthew 28. Jesus said, “Forgiveness of sins will preach in his name to all nations.” That’s Luke 24. In John chapter 20, Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And then in Acts chapter one verse eight, Jesus says, “You will receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses to the uttermost ends of the earth.” So Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts, five times, Jesus tells us to go and to preach the gospel. I think everyone knows that they should do that. But there is this natural hesitancy to think, what will people say?

(19:51):
What will people think? What if I’m rejected? And people begin to be very hesitant about sharing their faith. But we need to be intentional. And so when I go and preach the gospel in another country, last week I was in Equatorial Guinea in the middle of Africa. In a couple of weeks, I’ll be going to Mozambique to preach at two different crusade events. When I get up to speak, I start with the end in mind. So when I’m planning my sermon, I start with the altar call because I know that’s where I’m going. And then I work backwards all the way back to the first words that I say to the audience. And so throughout the entire message, I’m taking people on a journey, leading them to where they will give their lives to Jesus. And I think we can be the same when it comes to meals.

(20:51):
We can be very intentional and say, God, I know that you have told us to preach the gospel to every creature. Well, help me to share the gospel with this person that I am breaking bread with. Help us together to come to a knowledge of you and to plan your conversation and to think about it and be intentional about bringing them to a place where they say, yes, I need to have an encounter with God. And so we can start by talking about the weather or talking about sports, but then looking for the opportunity to turn the conversation towards the things of God.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (21:34):
That is very well said. I want to give you the opportunity to share your experience with totally stranger, whether in the United States or outside of the United States that you had. And you let Brother Daniel, somebody to Jesus. And how was that experience was for you?

Evangelist Daniel King (21:53):
Yeah. Last week I was in Equatorial Guinea and I was preaching about the paralyzed man who was let down through the roof. This man was completely paralyzed. He couldn’t move his hands. He couldn’t move his feet. For many years, he was paralyzed. And he heard about Jesus. And he had four friends and the four friends picked up his bed and carried him to where Jesus was teaching. And then they lowered him through the roof in front of Jesus. And Jesus says three things to the paralyzed man. The first thing Jesus says is be encouraged. The second thing Jesus says is, son, your sins are forgiven. And then the third thing Jesus says is get up, take up your bed and go home. And so Jesus healed the man completely in his spirit, in his mind and in his physical body. And then I gave the altercat and said the greatest miracle is when Jesus forgives your sins.

(22:56):
Is there anyone here who wants Jesus to forgive your sins? And there was a young man, 24 years old, his name was Benjamin. And he was the first to come running up. Actually, before I even got to the part where I talked about forgiveness of sins, Benjamin came all the way from the back, all the way to the front and lifted his hand and he stood there. And he stood there all by himself while I gave the altar call. And then because of his example, over 120 other people ended up coming to give their lives to Jesus. And I interviewed Benjamin and he said, “I want a new start in my life.” I heard you talk about how Jesus forgives our sins. And he’s like, “I want that. I want a new start. I want to be a new creation. I want Jesus to wash away my sin.” And the Bible says that all the angels of heaven rejoice when one sinner comes to repentance.

(23:58):
And so I know that the angels of heaven were rejoicing when Benjamin gave his life to Jesus. And that makes it worthwhile to see even just one person come up for an altar call and to see how their life can be transformed. It makes it all worthwhile. And I know that God can use you. If you will go and begin to share your faith, even step out in faith and invite someone to come to a meal with you, invite them to go out for coffee and say, “Hey, I just want to catch up. Let’s get coffee together.” And then as you’re sitting together, begin to ask them questions, “What’s going on in your life? How are you doing?” And usually when people are hurting, that hurt begins to come up. And you say, “Let’s pray together.” I believe Jesus can heal your heart. And then after you pray, say, “Hey, I want to make sure that your life is right with God.

(24:56):
Would you like to take a moment right now to make sure that you’re going to heaven?” And if they’re agreeable, then pray with them. If they want to talk more, sit back and listen and keep talking to them. And sometimes it might take more than one meal, but let’s do everything we can to reach as many people for Jesus as we possibly can.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (25:18):
Absolutely. Very well said. I want to know, this is after ministering in more than 70 nations and experiencing many different cultures. What have you learned about the universal power of hospitality and relationship in opening people’s heart to the gospel?

Evangelist Daniel King (25:38):
Yeah. Well, I understand that you’re from Pakistan. And of course, hospitality is a very

Evangelist Daniel King (25:46):
Part of Pakistani culture. And I remember visiting Pakistan several times and we would visit even very poor people. And they would give us the very best. They would cook roti bread and bring it out, piping hot. And man, Pakistani food is some of the best foods you can eat in the world. And people were so generous and they would eat with you. And the thing about eating with someone is once you eat together, then you can’t be enemies. Your friends. And so you eat together, you talk together. And I think that’s something that we need to recapture, especially in our American culture here, because sometimes people in America were so busy. And I’ve got three appointments and then I got to take my kids to soccer practice. And then I’ve got another. But if we’ll just slow life down a little bit and take the time to eat.

(26:45):
And I really love the example of Jesus when he met Zacchaeus. The story is found in Luke chapter 19. Zacchaeus was a sinner. He was a tax collector. His name, Zacchaeus, meant the righteous one, but he was not living in a righteous manner. He had decided to serve Caesar and to collect taxes for the Roman Empire and money had become his God. And because of that, everyone looked down on him. He was a short little guy, but he heard about Jesus. And when you hear about Jesus, your life is going to change. So he goes to where Jesus is and he tries to push through the crowd and people are pushing away and say, “Get out of here. Jesus doesn’t want to have anything to do with you.” So Zacchaeus, he climbs up into the sycamore tree and Jesus is walking by and Jesus sees him up there and he looks up at him and Jesus says, Zacchaeus.

(27:37):
And so Jesus knew his name. I don’t know how Jesus knew his name, but somehow Jesus knew his name. And I want you to know that Jesus knows your name. Jesus knows who you are. He knows where you’re from. He knows what your issues are. He knows what your problems are. And Jesus is calling you by name. He says Zacchaeus, and of course the whole crowd is quiet. And they said, “Oh, watch this. Jesus is going to lecture Zacchaeus. He’s going to shake his finger at him.” This is what the crowd was thinking. They’re thinking, “Jesus is going to shake his finger at Zacchaeus. He’s going to say, Zacchaeus, you better repent right now. You’ve been stealing from people. You’ve been taking too much in taxes. Money has been your God. Get down here. Grovel in the dirt.” But that’s not what Jesus did. You know what Jesus did?

(28:26):
He says, “Zacchaeus, come down from the tree for I’m coming to your house for lunch today.” And so Jesus goes over to his house, eats lunch with him. And of course, in Bible times, it would take several hours. They would eat several different dishes together. And we don’t really know what Jesus said to him during that time. But at the end of it, Zacchaeus says, “If I’ve stolen anything from anybody, I’m going to give it back.” And he says, “And then I’m going to give half of everything I have to the poor.” And he calls Jesus Lord. Caesar had been his Lord, but now he switches allegiance to Jesus. And he says, “Lord, I’m not going to serve money anymore. You’re going to be my God.” And Jesus looks at him and he says, “I tell you the truth. Today, salvation has come to this house.

(29:23):
For this man too, is a son of Abraham.” And Jesus, he says, “For the son of man has come to seeking to save the loss.” That’s the reason Jesus came, was to seek and to save the loss. And it all started with a meal. Jesus just sat with him, talked with him, listened to him. And because of that, Zacchaeus got his life right with God. And the same will happen when we reach out to people and love them, eat with them, and then talk to them about Jesus.

Evangelist Adnan Maqsood (29:58):
Love your analogy about About the eating, absolutely. And then writing a book, that is fantastic. Finally, would you pray for overviewers around the world that the Holy Spirit would give them boldness, compassion, and specific people they can reach, and that God would use their homes and tables as a places where they live can be transformed by Jesus Christ?

(31:30):
Lord, I pray that you would allow us to use meals the same way Jesus used meals, to reach out to people in Jesus’ name. Amen. Now, one more thing, if you’re watching and you’ve never given your life to Jesus, I want to tell you that right now, Jesus is preparing a banqueting table in heaven just for you. And at the end of time, there’s going to be a huge feast. It’s called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. And if you will give your life to Jesus, then Jesus will give you a personal invitation to come to this great banqueting table in heaven. And so if you want to give your life to Jesus right now, just lift up your hand to heaven and say, Jesus, save me. I believe Jesus died for my sins. I believe Jesus rose from the dead, and I want my seat reserved at the banqueting table in heaven in Jesus’ name.
