Why Christians Must Focus on the 10/40 Window
Jesus gave His followers a mission that is as urgent today as it was two thousand years ago. He said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 NKJV).
Yet, after two thousand years of Christian history, billions of people still live in places where they have little opportunity to hear the Good News about Jesus Christ.
There are entire villages where no church exists. There are cities with millions of people where Christians make up only a tiny percentage of the population. There are people who have never met a Christian, never owned a Bible, and never heard a clear explanation of how Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for their sins.
Many of these people live in a region of the world known as the 10/40 Window.
If we are serious about fulfilling the Great Commission, we must understand what the 10/40 Window is, why it matters, and what we can do to reach the people who live there.
What Is the 10/40 Window?
The 10/40 Window is a geographical region stretching across North Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia. It extends approximately from 10 degrees north latitude to 40 degrees north latitude, from the western coast of Africa to eastern Asia.
The term was popularized by missionary strategist Luis Bush in 1990 as a way to help Christians recognize the enormous spiritual needs concentrated in this part of the world.
The region includes countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and China, along with many other nations.
The 10/40 Window is significant because it contains a tremendous concentration of people who belong to religious traditions other than Christianity, including Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
Some of the world’s largest Muslim populations live in this region. India is home to hundreds of millions of Hindus. Buddhism has deep historical roots throughout much of Asia.
These nations contain ancient civilizations, rich cultures, beautiful languages, and people whom God deeply loves.
Yet many communities have limited access to the message of Jesus Christ.
The 10/40 Window helps us identify where the Church needs to concentrate greater attention, prayer, resources, and missionary activity.
Billions of People Still Need to Hear the Gospel
According to the Joshua Project, approximately 5.49 billion people live in the 10/40 Window. Of these, an estimated 3.52 billion belong to approximately 5,905 unreached people groups.
Think about that number. More than three billion people belong to communities where the Church has not yet developed sufficient strength and resources to evangelize their own people without outside assistance.
An unreached people group is generally defined as a distinct ethnic or cultural community with very few evangelical Christians and limited access to an established, self-sustaining Christian witness.
This does not mean every individual has never heard the name of Jesus. It means that entire communities still lack meaningful access to the Gospel.
The need is enormous, and the responsibility belongs to the worldwide Body of Christ.
Why Should Christians Focus on the 10/40 Window?
- Jesus Commanded Us to Reach Every Nation
In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commanded His disciples to make disciples of all nations.
The Greek word translated as “nations” is ethne, which refers to peoples or ethnic groups. Jesus wants the Gospel to reach every tribe, language, and culture.
Revelation 7:9 gives us a beautiful picture of heaven, where people from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue worship before God’s throne.
If people from every nation will worship Jesus in heaven, we should be working to reach every nation here on earth!
- The Greatest Spiritual Needs Deserve Our Attention
Imagine two villages. In the first village, there are twenty churches, Christian radio stations, Christian bookstores, and thousands of believers.
In the second village, there is no church, no pastor, no Bible, and no known Christian witness.
Both villages matter to God. But which village has the greater need for a missionary?
The answer is obvious.
The Apostle Paul understood this principle. In Romans 15:20, he explained his ambition to preach Christ where His name was not already known.
Paul deliberately went to places where the Gospel had not yet been established. As modern missionaries, we should follow his example.
- Missionary Resources Must Be Used Strategically
Churches around the world give generously to missions. Christians sacrifice their time, money, and talents to advance the Kingdom of God. Yet the distribution of missionary resources remains uneven. Joshua Project estimates that only about 3% of missionaries serve in the 10/40 Window, even though the region contains most of the world’s unreached people groups.
This should challenge every church and mission organization to evaluate its priorities.
We must continue strengthening existing churches, training pastors, and evangelizing our communities. But we must also intentionally direct more resources toward places where people have the least opportunity to hear about Jesus.
- The Challenges Require Extraordinary Faith
Missionary work in the 10/40 Window can be difficult.
Some nations restrict religious conversion or public evangelism. In certain communities, people who become Christians may experience rejection from their families, discrimination, or even violence.
Other challenges include language barriers, poverty, limited infrastructure, and difficulty obtaining permission to conduct public meetings.
These challenges make prayer, cultural understanding, and partnerships with local believers especially important.
What Can You Do to Reach the 10/40 Window?
Every Christian can participate in reaching the least-reached places on earth.
- You can pray for unreached people groups.
- Support us as we serve in these difficult places.
- Help us provide Bibles, train indigenous evangelists, plant churches, and sponsor Gospel crusades.
Going Where Jesus Is Least Known
As a missionary evangelist, I have had the privilege of preaching the Gospel in nations around the world. I have witnessed thousands of people respond to the message of salvation, and I have seen God perform wonderful miracles.
But my heart continues to be drawn toward places where the Gospel is rarely heard. I want to go where the need is greatest. I want to preach in villages where people have never heard a clear presentation of the Gospel. I want to see entire communities transformed by the love and power of Jesus Christ. And I want to help raise up a generation of evangelists who will boldly go into the harvest fields of the world.
Jesus said in Matthew 9:37 that the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. The harvest is waiting in the 10/40 Window. Billions of people still need to hear the Good News.
Will you help us go? Will you pray? Will you give?
The Great Commission remains unfinished. Together, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can take the Gospel to the least-reached places on earth. Because every person deserves an opportunity to hear about Jesus!
