Main Idea: Even if you are one thousands steps away from God, it is only one step back.
Key Verse: “[God] commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30 NIV).
A young man grew up in a Christian home. His parents loved Jesus, took him to church, and taught him to pray. As a little boy, he loved singing worship songs and hearing stories from the Bible.
But when he became a teenager, he started making some bad decisions. One day, he told a lie. That was his first step away from God. Then he started hanging around the wrong friends. That was another step.
Soon, he started drinking, partying, and doing things he knew were wrong. Step by step, he wandered further and further away from God. Eventually, he stopped going to church. He stopped reading his Bible. He stopped praying.
Years passed. His life became a mess. He lost his job, destroyed several relationships, and found himself trapped in habits he couldn’t break. One night, he sat alone in his apartment, feeling completely hopeless.
He thought about how far he had fallen. He remembered the little boy who used to love Jesus. He remembered the joy he once felt when he prayed.
With tears streaming down his face, he whispered, “God, I’ve messed up my life. I’ve made so many mistakes. I’ve gone so far away from You. I don’t even know how to find my way back.”
Then he remembered something his father used to tell him. “Son, every step you take away from God is a step in the wrong direction. But no matter how far you go, you can always turn around.”
The young man began to think about all the wrong decisions he had made. He thought, I’ve taken a thousand steps away from God. How could I ever make it back? It would take me years to undo all the damage I’ve done.
Then he remembered the story Jesus told about the prodigal son.The prodigal son had left his father’s house, wasted his inheritance, and ended up feeding pigs. But one day, he came to his senses and decided to go home.
And what happened when his father saw him coming? The father ran to meet him! Suddenly, the young man understood something about God’s grace. He had spent years running away from God, but God was ready to welcome him home.
He fell to his knees beside his bed and prayed, “Jesus, I’m sorry. I’ve sinned against You. I’ve gone my own way. But tonight, I’m turning around. Please forgive me. I want to come home.”
Right there, in that little apartment, he experienced the love and forgiveness of God. He didn’t have to spend a thousand days trying to earn God’s forgiveness. He didn’t have to fix every mistake before he could pray. He simply had to repent and put his faith in Jesus.
His past decisions still had consequences, and he had some difficult things to work through. But his relationship with God had been restored. He had taken a thousand steps away from God, but it only took one step of repentance to turn back toward Him.
The Bible says in James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Maybe you feel like that young man. Maybe you’ve made a thousand mistakes. Maybe you’ve spent years running from God. Maybe you think you’ve gone too far to ever come back. But I have good news for you. God is ready to forgive you. His arms are open wide. His mercy is greater than your mistakes, and His grace is greater than your sin.
Even if you are 1,000 steps away from God, it is only one step back. Take that step today. Turn away from your sin and turn toward Jesus. Your Heavenly Father is waiting to welcome you home!
