Report from Mauriti, Brazil

One morning, we took packages of food to a local neighborhood to give away. The packets contained rice, beans, oil, butter, cookies, coffee, sugar, and noodles. We knocked on each door and when they answered, we said, “We want to bless your family with this food, and if there is anything you need prayer for, we would love to pray with you.” Many families were living in extreme poverty so when they saw the food, they started to cry. After we prayed for their needs, we shared the Gospel with the family and led them in a prayer of salvation.

At one house, we spoke to a teenage mother. We asked her what she wanted us to pray for. She said, “Please pray for my uncle. He is sick with cancer, and he has tried to commit suicide three times.” We prayed with her for him and then we left. Ten minutes later she ran to find us and she was crying, “My uncle just tried to commit suicide for the fourth time. Can you visit him and pray for him?”  His house was nearby so we promised to go find him.

When we walked into his house, I felt a spirit of heaviness. The whole family was gathered outside and everyone was sad. We went into the bedroom and found the man. He was crying. On his ankle was an “ankle monitor.” He was under house arrest because of crimes he had committed. If he left his house, the police would chase him.

The man wept. I told him, “You don’t need to commit suicide. You are made by God. You are valuable. If you cry out to Jesus, He will save you and heal you.” He cried some more. I laid my hands on him and prayed for him. I shared the Gospel with him. I asked him, “Do you want to call on Jesus and ask Him to save you?” He replied, “Yes.” His family was looking in through a window, watching what was happening. I asked the family if they wanted Jesus to save them, too? They all nodded, “Yes.’

I led him in a prayer of salvation. His family repeated the prayer along with him. The moment we said, “Amen,” the man’s demeanor changed. He wiped away his tears. We found a shirt for him to put on. He started to smile.

We ministered to the whole family. A crippled grandmother was healed. Another uncle gave his life to Jesus. I prayed over the children who were running around. We gave their family several packets of food. By the time we left, the atmosphere of the whole house had changed. The man was so thankful. He waved and smiled big as we left.

This testimony illustrates the power of the Gospel. This man was hurting in three areas of his life. First, he was a criminal, a sinner. Second, he was diagnosed with cancer. Third, he was fighting the spirit of depression and suicide. But Jesus touched him in all three areas. I am reminded of what Jesus told the paralyzed man in Matthew 9. First, Jesus said, “Be encouraged.” Second, Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven.” Third, Jesus said, “Get up, take up your bed, and go home completely healed.”

Jesus saves criminals. Jesus encourages whose who are suicidal and depressed. Jesus heals cancer and every kind of disease. Jesus brings complete wholeness; spirit, soul, and body. Not only did Jesus make this man whole, He also brought salvation to his whole household.

A Report from Caicó, Brazil

Caicó, Brazil is located in Northeast Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. According to a census in 2013 a total of 66,246 people live in the city. The city has the highest rate of suicide in the state and the third highest rate of suicide in the country of Brazil. Caicó is known as a stronghold of idolatry and the people fight mental depression and spiritual oppression. The city is considered to be a stronghold of Catholicism. The patron saint of Caicó is St. Anne and every year a festival is held by the Roman Catholic Church to honor her memory. Caicó is also known for hosting the largest carnival in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

The planning for the crusade began six months in advance. A crusade director visited the city of Caicó and met with the local pastors. They indicated their eagerness to participate in the crusade. All nine of the evangelical churches in the city participated in our crusade. The total membership of these nine churches equals 1,357 which is about 2% of the population of the city of Caicó.

Three months prior to the crusade, prayer cards were given to all the church members. Each believer was encouraged to write down the names of ten unsaved people on their prayer card and to begin to pray for them to be saved. When the event drew closer, the church members reached out to the ten people and invited each of them to attend the crusade. Permission was secured from local authorities to hold the event. One month prior to the crusade, one thousand posters were distributed throughout the city. The local churches distributed seventy thousand crusade pamphlets and fifty thousand youth crusade invitations. In the eight days prior to the crusade, seven sound cars were used to announce the crusade for six hours each day for a total of two hundred and fifty-six hours of sound car announcements. Seven hundred and fifty radio spots were run on three different radio stations over a fifteen-day period. WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook were also used to advertise the event.

Our international team of ministers included six Americans, one Canadian, one Paraguayan, one German, and at least five Brazilians. When the team arrived in the city, we immediately began ministering in local schools and neighborhoods. We also gave away food to hungry families.

We held a three-day training event for local believers. Then we did a youth event and used music and a strength team to attract the young people. When the crusade began, the city was ready. On Friday night, three deaf people were healed and began to speak. This miracle caused attendance on Saturday night to greatly increase. We also did a children’s festival and a pastoral leadership seminar.

A total of 641 people filled out decision cards at the crusade indicating they decided to follow Jesus. This harvest of souls represents an increase of 43% in the number of Christians in Caicó, On the Sunday after the crusade, all nine churches in the city reported that new people attended their churches.
