Choosing to Follow Jesus

Main Point: Will you choose to follow Jesus or will you choose to turn away from Him?

Key Verse:“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV).

Illustration: Every day we face choices. Some choices are good choices, other choices are bad choices.

(Sometimes I will invite someone up on the platform and give them a choice between a piece of money or a tree leaf. I ask them to make sure they make the right choice. I ask the audience to give them advice. Of course, they choose the money. The point of this illustration is to present two options and to show that we have a choice between them. Then I might share a story or an illustration of some choices I have made in my life. I use these stories to illustrate the the results of making a poor choice and the benefits of making a wise choice.)

* Do I choose to marry Jessica (the beautiful girl) or Mary (the girl with a bad attitude)?

* Do I choose to eat bread or rocks?

* Do I choose to go to work at my job or do I chose to steal money from the bank?

God gives us a choice. God says, “I set before you life and death, blessing and cursing.” It is like a multiple choice test. But then God gives us a hint. He supplies the answer. He says, “Choose life!” (Deut. 30:19).

Jesus also gives us a choice. He says there is a narrow road that leads to salvation and there is a broad road that leads to destruction. Many people choose to follow the broad road, but they will never get to heaven. The Bible says there is a  narrow path that leads to heaven. The name of that path is Jesus.

Will you choose to follow Jesus tonight? Will you put your faith and trust in Him?

Heaven is a real place and hell is a real place. Every human will spend eternity in one of these two places. You can spend your life any way you choose, but you can only spend it once. The choices you make in this life will determine where you will go when you die.
