Main Idea: The word “repent” means to turn around and to go in the opposite direction.
Key Verses: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus” (Acts 3:19-20).
“Turn from evil and do good” (Psalm 34:14).
“But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die” (Ezekiel 18:21 NIV).
Illustration: One day, I was driving through an unfamiliar area, trying to find my destination. I had Google Maps open on my iPhone, and a woman’s voice was giving me turn-by-turn directions.
Suddenly, she said, “Turn left.” But I looked at the road and thought, That can’t be right. I know where I’m going. So instead of turning left, I turned right.
Immediately, Google Maps began recalculating my route. A few seconds later, the voice said, “Make a U-turn.” I thought, No way! I’m not turning around. I know a better way. So I did what any stubborn man would do. I turned off Google Maps. After all, it’s my phone. I don’t have to listen to it!
Well, about twenty minutes later, I was completely lost. I had no idea where I was or how to get where I wanted to go. My wife, of course, thought the whole situation was hilarious. Finally, I swallowed my pride, pulled out my iPhone, and opened Google Maps again.
Now, imagine if the voice had said, “Oh, so NOW you want my help? I told you to turn left, but you wouldn’t listen! You thought you were smarter than me! Well, good luck finding your own way home. I’m done with you!” But that’s not what happened. Instead, Google Maps simply recalculated my route and gave me the next direction I needed to get back on track.
That is a beautiful picture of God’s grace. Sometimes God tells us to go one direction, but we insist on going another. We think we know better than God. We ignore His instructions, make wrong turns, and eventually find ourselves completely lost.
But here’s the good news. God hasn’t given up on you! When you finally recognize that you’ve been going the wrong direction, God doesn’t say, “You rejected Me! You disobeyed Me! Now you’re on your own!”
Instead, He lovingly invites you to turn around. That’s what repentance means. You recognize that you’re going the wrong direction, and you make a U-turn. You turn away from sin and turn toward God.
And the moment you turn toward Him, His grace is there to welcome you. Repentance is making a U-turn. Grace is God’s willingness to lead you home.
No matter how many wrong turns you’ve made, no matter how far you’ve wandered, and no matter how lost you feel, God knows exactly where you are. And if you’re willing to listen to His voice, He will show you the way home.
