This is my Bible. I have read through this book seven times cover to cover. The fastest I have read through my entire Bible is five days. I have preached over 2,000 sermons holding this Bible. Some pages are torn, others are marked up so much that they are hard to read, every page contains precious promises for my life. I have over 150 pages of type written notes from my personal time with God’s word. I have done detailed studies of many of the books in the Bible.
This is my Bible. I am what it says I am. I can have what it says I can have. I can do what it says I can do.
The King James Version of the Bible contains 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 31,102 verses and 783,137 words.
The Bible contains 66 books written by around 39 different authors over 1,600 years (between approximately 1700 B.C. and 100 A.D.) in three different languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The authors of these books include shepherds, prophets, kings, priests, poets, students, musicians, philosophers, fishermen, a tent maker, and a doctor. It is full of poetry, proverbs, letters, laws, histories, prophecies, philosophy, and stories.
Throughout the Bible there is remarkable unity. Despite being written by many different men and in many different time periods, the entire Bible has one theme, our salvation through Jesus Christ.
We do not read the Bible in the same way that we read other books. When people read the Iliad or Shakespeare they read those books as literature. But the Bible is God’s word to you. Before you can grasp the Bible, you have to choose to believe it. If you are not willing to kneel when you read the Bible, you will never understand it.
Sharon Daugherty says, “God’s word endures forever. No matter what the circumstances are, God’s word remains the same. You can put your trust in the eternal word of God.”
If you see a Bible falling apart, it probably belongs to someone whose life isn’t. As one wise mama said to her son, “Dirty Bible, clean living. Clean bible, dirty living.”
The Bible is meant to be bread for daily use, not cake for special occasions. Through daily Bible reading you will be washed and renewed in your mind and spirit. You will be strengthened and guided by the power of the Scriptures. Set aside time each day to focus on God and His book. Don’t allow other things to choke out time in the Word. You will be transformed into the likeness of Jesus through the renewing of your mind.
God’s word is the standard that tells us how to live right side up in an upside down world. The Bible answers two important questions:
What is right?
What is not right?
How do we know the Bible is the truth?
Here are six witnesses to the truth of God’s word from one of my professors at seminary.
- Internal Witness – The Bible says it is the truth.
- Historical Witness – 2000 years of church history.
- Universal Witness – The word works in every culture.
- Personal Witness – The Word has changed my life.
- Spirit Bearing Witness – The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God’s word.
- Witness of others – the Word changes people’s lives.
I live my life according to the Word of God. Because of God’s Word, I am committed to stay married to my wife. Because of God’s Word, I preach the Gospel. Because of God’s Word, I love others. Because of God’s Word, I live a life of faith. Because of God’s Word, I sow seed. Because of God’s Word, I trust in the goodness of God. Because of God’s Word, I believe in healing.
