I am extremely surprised that anyone would blame Job’s sickness on God. The Bible clearly says Satan caused Job’s troubles, “…Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head” (Job 2:7). Do not attribute the work of Satan to God.
The reason people say God put sickness on Job is because God allowed it to happen. Now, in a sense, this is true. Nothing can occur without God permitting it. But since God has given His creation free choice, many bad events happen which God does not want to happen. God permits them to take place, but He does not cause them.
Repeatedly, Satan asked God to stretch out His hand against Job. Because of Satan’s words, some Christians think God put sickness on Job, but consider the source. It is Satan speaking. I think Satan was mocking God by asking Him to do something which God would obviously never do.
Even though God gave Satan permission to put sickness on Job, God did not commission him to make Job sick. As Kenneth Hagan explained, “God will permit you to rob a gas station, but he won’t commission you to do it.”
In reality God simply allowed the devil to operate based on the principles of free choice. Satan tried to pin the blame on God; Job’s friends blamed God, and even Job suspected God caused his sickness, but God never claims responsibility. The Bible wholly places the blame for Job’s troubles on Satan.
At the end of the book of Job, we see God’s true character. He enters the scene as a healer who restores Job’s health and wealth. God is always a healer, never a destroyer.
