3. Sin
Sin stops God’s blessings. When we deliberately hide sin in our hearts, our prayers bounce off the gates of heaven. As the psalmist pointed out, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened” (Psalm 66:18). Entering the throne room of God begins with repentance.
There are two sins which are particularly dangerous. First, unforgiveness towards another human creates a bitter acid which eats away at your spiritual man. Eventually this will affect your physical body. Unforgiveness in your heart hurts you far more than it hurts the person it is directed towards. If you are angry at someone, repent and forgive and this will open the door for your healing.
Second, it is important not to get bitter. All too often people say, “Well, I prayed for my aunt for three years and she died of cancer. I don’t believe in that healing stuff.” Their bitterness is cutting off the flow of God’s blessing. If you are bitter towards God, repentance is the key to your healing. Do not allow yesterday’s failures to prevent you from receiving today’s miracle.
The good news is the blood of Jesus washes away every sin the moment you repent and ask forgiveness. Once the dirty stains of sin are replaced with clean robes of righteousness, God is able to move in the area of healing.
4. Lack of Faith
When Jesus visited His hometown of Nazareth, He was powerless to heal because of their unbelief. “Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. ‘Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?’ they asked. ‘Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?’ And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, ‘Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.’ And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith” (Matthew 13:54‑58). In this case, healing power ceased when unbelief started.
Your spiritual life is like a teeter-totter. God is on one side casting a vote in your favor, and Satan is on the other side casting a vote against you. The direction you walk determines which way the teeter totters. God is for you, Satan is against you, and your faith is the determining factor in what happens to you.
5. Divine Mystery
A lack of faith is not the only reason some are not healed. There are some faithful Christians who do many of the right things and still die. Oral Roberts was once asked why some are not healed. He answered, “I don’t know why some are healed and some are not, but I thank God for those who are healed.”
Because God is omnipresent, He hears every prayer. Because God is omnipotent, He has the power to answer every prayer. But because God is omniscient, He does not always answer prayers in the way we want Him to. Since our Father is all-knowing, He knows what is best for His children. Sometimes when God’s children ask for healing, they are not healed immediately, but this does not mean God will not heal them.
In the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis uses a lion named Aslan to represent Jesus. One of Lewis’ characters observes that this lion is a safe lion, but not a tame one. He will not hurt anyone, but he cannot be ordered around either. There is an old joke which children tell which asks, “Where does a lion sit in the park?” The answer? “Anywhere he wants to.” God, like the king of the beasts, is sovereign. One is absolutely safe in His hands, but one can not force Him to do anything He is not ready to do.
Paul writes, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen” (Romans 11:33‑36).
At times the mystery of why some are not healed must be left in God’s hands. I do know we should not allow failures to reduce our faith in God’s ability to heal. Divine mystery must be left a mystery, but there is one thing that must not remain a mystery. God wants all His children to walk in supernatural health, and eventually all believers will be resurrected with bodies which will not decay or perish. On that day sickness will be a thing of the past!
