Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:48):
Welcome to the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King. I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a very special guest Samuel Chiang. Thank you for being with me today.
Samuel Chiang (00:59):
Thank you, Daniel. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your audience and speaking about evangelism.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:08):
So tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do
Samuel Chiang (01:12):
A little bit about myself. I’m a husband, a one wife, Robbie. I have families and I serve as an executive director for global evangelism network of the world evangelical Alliance. And what we do is we encourage countries in world evangelical Alliance to participate in God’s mission, through evangelism and discipleship.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:38):
And so the, the world evangelical Alliance is, is all over the world. I mean, what a, a great organization, what is God doing in the area of evangelism among all of these great evangelical ministries?
Samuel Chiang (01:54):
Yeah, so world evangelical Alliance is 175 year old organization. And one of the things that we desire very much to serve the global church is to activate all of the spheres within the church so that people who are not only in the pastoral roles, but even more so who are in the pews, who actually does real work in the marketplace, are engaged in evangelism as well. That’s one of the things that we are very, very much want to encourage and serve. And of course we also wanna serve the role and the office of the evangelists.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:37):
And so how do you find evangelists? How do evangelists get connected to you? And then once they get connected, what do they do to be a part of what you’re doing?
Samuel Chiang (02:49):
Well, one of the things about global evangelism network is that we’re a network of networks. And what we believe is that evangelists who come along and they may find resources on our website, witnessed our city. What we actually want to do is encourage them to be part of a local national or regional fellowship so that they could serve and expand their ministry at that level very specifically. And in that sense, we really want to help the pastors to not only have the utmost respect, but to support the evangelists in all that they do. When the evangelists does their work, they’re speaking forth the word of God, which has power to penetrate the darkness and bring light forth into the individual, the family, the community, and the society.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:45):
How did you personally first receive the call to evangelism and to be involved with evangelism?
Samuel Chiang (03:54):
Wow, that’s a really interesting question. It goes back to a summer camp. I’m an immigrant. I left Taiwan and went to Canada. It went back to a summer camp in which a fellow by named Kai Marx brought the word of God into my heart. And I knew that was very, very special. And from then on, I understood why should I have the opportunity to hear, and then why shouldn’t other people have the opportunity to hear? And that has been burning in my heart for all these decades and that deep, deep call of saying, why should anybody here twice before someone have the opportunity to hear once was set by my senior pastor, Dr. OJ Smith back in Toronto. I had sat under his teaching when he was still alive and it burned into me because I am such a privileged person to receive the full gospel of Jesus Christ. And I want to see other people having that opportunity to speak forth and to speak forth and also for others to receive the message of the loving message of Jesus.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:18):
Wow, Oswald Jay Smith was such a great missions, thinker and encouraging people to be involved in evangelism. How has he impacted your life? What, what most impacted you through his teaching?
Samuel Chiang (05:35):
It’s actually what his son said that Paul, Dr. Paul B. Smith talked about how he listened to his father, walking the floors in the carpets. And then he said, when his father prayed, he always walked forth, back and forth in his room. He could hear it, but when he went into his room, he could see the carpet. There is if you will, a divot were dance down where he continually walked. When he prayed, that is enough left me. And I heard that when I was a teenager. And actually when I pray, I too walk, I just wear out my running shoes, but that has been one thing that has been very, very important to me. The second one is he’s written many, many books and wrote many hymns and words and that, that fit it with his partner down in the us when he sent it to him. But there was a book that he wrote it’s called the man God uses. And you know, when I read that when I was a teenager, and then again, when I read it, when I was in my twenties, I, I, I just embrace that in even today. When I think about things I continually want to just surrender myself to God, because I wanna be a man that God could use.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:10):
Amen. I do as well. May God use both of us. Yeah. I understand that you lived in Hong Kong for many years. You’re from Asia and have a heart for Asia. My wife her family is from Hong Kong. Her grandmother lived there. And so a few years ago before her grandmother passed away, we, we went there to visit her. We had the opportunity to minister in a wonderful church in Hong Kong. It was full of immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines that had come there to work as maids among some of the people. And, and some of them were separated from their families and, and many of them were hurting and we ministered to them had such a wonderful time. But what do you feel God is doing in the area of evangelism in Asia?
Samuel Chiang (08:05):
Wow. Daniel, that’s a really, really large question. You know, post pandemic, there are several things that has happened. I’ll speak firstly, specifically about Hong Kong and then maybe a little bit about China in Hong Kong. People post pandemic has liking many other parts of the world have slowly come back to the church and some have drifted away because it’s a car service. They said, ah, maybe I could just catch it online. That for me is very unfortunate because I believe in the fellowship of the body, in terms of their witness, what I have discovered is that people are interested in having conversations and because the current situation in Hong Kong, where the government has been very, very specific, tight, and have used COVID pandemic as a means of not only cracking down, but to make certain that people don’t congregate as much people need to find friends and be able to talk about their deepest heart matters.
Samuel Chiang (09:21):
And so those sort of things are happening and, and people are trying to learn how to rebuild trust in China. Very specifically government has cracked down specifically with iron fists. They have announced different things that they wanna break Christianity in different ways. And and now we’re having to watch, what is God working through the Christians who are in mainland China, who are going to ask God to use them. We’re watching that very, very carefully and specifically too. I, I, I, for your audience, I, I want to mention this, you know, the government, China has makes certain that COVID rulings as well as social distancing and locking downs are happening even today. But, and, and interestingly right across something like 20 different provinces, Chinese people in China are refusing to pay de mortgage. And that has huge consequences on the banks.
Samuel Chiang (10:42):
And so the government have to calculate tingly. Think about that very specifically, do they build a melt? Do they not build a melt? And you know, you wonder what God is doing in the heart of the government and in the hearts of the people at this moment. So we’re watching that very carefully and it’s continuing time to pray for China. I’ll just add one more piece, which is in south Asia, India has become the largest, most populous nation in the world. And the government, there is not particularly friendly to Christians, the crackdown, the persecution, the burning of the church, all those things have been happening. The Christians, there are very firm to say, we want to stand for what we believe. So we shall need to also pray for them to see what God is gonna do in the midst of them.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:42):
We are praying for the people of China, the people of India, my wife is full Chinese. And so both of our children are half Chinese half Caucasian, half Chinese. So, but we love the Chinese people and we believe that God has a great plan for them. Yeah. And so let’s just finish by praying together for Asia to come to Jesus and for the, the believers of Asia that they would be strengthened. Would, would you pray with me?
Samuel Chiang (12:16):
Our Heavenly Father. We thank you for the opportunity to pray for China and for India, we pray that you will bring the gospel to the years of those people who are in China, who are in India, and that they will hear the gospel message of the love of Jesus. Thank you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:07):
Amen. Well, if someone wants to get connected with you and to avail themselves of the, the resources that you have in the area of evangelism, what is the website? How can they connect with
Samuel Chiang (13:20):
Yeah. So if you just type in www.witness.city. It would direct you to the right place. And so you could discover much resources there.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:37):
Wonderful. Thank you for being on the evangelism podcast.
